Anybody tow with a new F150?
 

Just wondering if anybody is towing an enclosed car trailer with a late model Ford F150. Last week I drove a 2017 F150 crewcab Lariet, with the twin Turbo Ecoboost 3.5L V6 and 10 speed automatic, and I was very suprised as how strong it pulled that fairly heavy 4x4 truck around. I believe that the Ecoboost is rated at over 400HP, and thats over 100 HP higher than my 6.8 L V10 in my F350 Dually. Amazing. No idea how they hold up over the years, but pretty impressive. I also understand that the new 5.0 "Coyote" V8, which is not turboed is also rated at 400 HP for 2018, and I seen a video on Facebook where a guy took his new 2018 5.0 F150 to the track, with 200 miles on it, and peeled off a few 13.3s and 4 at almost 104 MPH!
I had the 2017 Ecoboost F 150 on the hoist at work, and it looks pretty stount, the the frame is a full rectangle, and measured 9" deep, and 3" wide, with a pretty large rear axle, 9 3/4" I believe. Supposedly the 3.5 Ecoboost is rated to tow over 13,000 pounds, my F350 dually is less. I know it`s "only" a F150, but are the newer "1/2 tons" really that suitable for towing those kinds of loads? Anybody know how these Ecoboosts and 10 speeds are holding up? Personally, I would lean towards the 5.0 V8, but even that seems so small for that kind of weight. Or am I just an old school dinasaur who has not been keeping up with modern technoledgy?

Just because it can tow 13K, doesn't mean it should. If a 1/2 ton can do all this , why make anything else? js

I have a 2012 f150 crewcab 3.5 ecoboost 6sp auto. Enclosed 24ft Intech aluminum trailer. 3500 lb car and tools.No problems so far. More than enough power and braking. I've got about 3000 miles towing so far. We will see how it lasts.

Rory, we use to pull a heavy Airstream and engaged in several discussions about suitable tow vehicles. Attaching a link that may be helpful and you can also search the airforum for other helpful threads. Airstream owners have millions of miles experience towing with 1/2 ton trucks, sure you’ve seen them hauling silver bullets. My only input would be if you tow through the Rockies much (as in Cabbage Hill on I-84 outside of Pendleton) a good diesel with exhaust brake takes the stress out of the equation. New trucks are so crazy expensive anyway you may want to give diesel a look.

I have a 2017 Expedition, eco boost V6, rated at 9100 lbs. towing.

It has the heavy duty towing package.

Meaning, touch the button on the shifter and you have engine braking.

2017 F150's are rated at 14,000 with the towing package.

I would lean towards the 5.0L, just because I think it will be more durable if you plan to keep it for a an extended period of time. The turbo assist makes power, there is no disputing that. I towed a 7,000 lb. load from Toronto to Washington DC using an F150 with the 2.7L Ecoboost V6. They can do it, but I much prefer my F250 and 6.2L in front of almost 10,000 lb. of my junk.

I have a 2016 F 150 with the 5.0. It has the large rear and 3.73 gears. I'm sure power wise it can tow, but I have a Ram Diesel and don't tow with the Ford.
My F150 is a crew cab short bed and does not have a factory rear sway bar. I would add one of them before I towed anything too heavy. I have looked at putting one on anyway. Most of the aftermarket ones are adjustable, so it would make the truck handle better too and not adversely affect the ride of the truck.

While I would not be afraid to tow anything that was under the manufactures tow rating, I sure enjoy the stability that dual real wheels provide, plus the effortless pull by the Cummins.

However dual wheel, crew cab pickups are not the best for daily driving just because of the size.

My thinking was that if I could get a new F50, likely with the 5.0 V8 and the maximum towing package, it could be my "do everything" truck. I currently have a F350 Dually Super cab, with a V10 and 5 speed, which I rarely use for anything besides towing the trailer to the track, maybe 3000 miles a year. I have a Ford Ranger for a daily driver, as the dually is not very good for my 1 hour each way work commute, and parking in Downtown Vancover, so if I could replaced those two with something capable of towing my trailer, and gets semi decent gas mileage, it would free up room in the driveway. Both my current trucks do their tasks just fine, but it takes 2 of them to do it.

While it all sounds good in theory, to me that's the same as having a street/strip car. It's always going to be a compromise somewhere........ Since you already have both vehicles, I'd keep them and put up with the driveway issue.
