AHRA index racing

How does this new AHRA deal work? The flyer says they are running it at the Winternationals. Are they like a circuit that rented some time from NHRA? Sounds really interesting.

The website www.ahraonline contains more info-apparently will award $10000 to SG winner if he or she has no electronics.

If you have an automatic you win 5k, with a manual transmission you win 10K. Check it out

It would be real interesting to see if any cars actually fit into the requirements. Most of not all the cars have stops for the most part, I wonder if some will switch to a plate slide under the carb so they can try to get the cash.

I'm surprised NHRA will have the time for another eliminator ? Could it be that they want to see how the fans in the stands will react to the index type of racing without the "START/STOP/START" type that S/C, S/G. and S/ST has turned into with the over sized expensive fast MPH engines being used today ????

NHRA isn't adding any classes, you simply have to become an AHRA member and compete in the heads up classes without benefit of the electronic aides. Somebody with a well sorted car using the slide stops or weights could possibly pull it off and it would be fun to see one do it. Ever since Troy Coughlin started the big MPH trend at Indy many years ago it's been harder and harder for the regular bracket racer to step into the heads up classes at the Divisional and National events.

I did not mean they were adding a class for good. Just an addition at the Winter nationals as an experiment to see fan reaction. Spectators hate the start/stop and start again so called racing.

It's not another eliminator or class or anything like that. They are not affiliated with NHRA. It's like an ordered hit by an assassin or hitman. They have put a bounty on the Super Gas Class at the 2018 Winters. You must be an AHRA member and it costs $50. If you call AHRA office they have the details and can get you set up to collect the bounty. It pays $5K if you win class with an automatic with no throttle control devices (just your foot) or delay box, $10K if you win with a clutch type manual tranny and no electronics or throttle control devices just driver skill. It's that simple. I have already called, it's easy. (615) 580-3137, they are easy to deal with and want to promote Sportsman Super Gas driver skill within the class. They have a 9.90 index class exactly like the bounty and are promoting it.

I can't see that there will be a lot of cars, if any, signing up for this. It's hard enough to win a Super class race with all of the electronics. I can't imagine that there are 10 cars in the country that match all the requirements.

To bad as the electronic and air operated throttle stops have killed the .90 classes for the spectator. Just take a look in the stands when they run today. In the beginning its was a bolt stop or adjustment with weight. The start and bog then start again is boring as hell !

It is true that .90 racing is boring to most all spectators, but that is because they really don't understand how the game is played. It is far from boring to the drivers that participate in the .90 classes. Besides, most spectators are not at a National Event to watch the .90 classes.

What do you think would happen if the electronics were banned?

Some day I'll finally ascend to Stock or Super Stock so I can do my burnout and look through the smoke in awe at full grandstands at a national event!

Look at the stands for any of the sportsman classes except maybe TS and TD and you see the same things.
Have you ever competed in the throttle stop classes?
If not don't knock it until you try it.
160+ mph in a roadster is much more fun for me than 110 MPH was in my stocker and it was a stick car.
I ran stock for years in the 60's and early 70's.
I have just as much or more fun now running a SG car as I did the stock car back when.
Being retired it is also less work to run the SG car and to me it is about fun not how much work it takes to be competitive. I would not have retired if I wanted to work the hours it takes to be competitive in stock and super stock.
It is all about different strokes for different folks. I have other interests other than drag racing also.
Please don't knock any of the classes or we may just not have any classes to run in the future.
Be a part of the solution not part of the problem by knocking a class of racers.
Just My 2 Cents

Much better racing and a better show for the spectator.

So,. Is this AHRA bounty only listed for the west coast? I went to there web site, and really could not find info on this. I don't believe I am eligible, since I have a Lenco. But i might call tomorrow and ask. I can't believe they are going to pay 10k, really! There has to be a issue where no one is eligible

Maybe, but you would bankrupt all of the after market companies . That wouldn't be very good..........

Re: AHRA index racing

I believe a little compromise on electronics would make the AHRA version a lot more palatable for all. Lack of spectators seems to be the big problem, and spectators would have no idea if there were a delay box or rpm shifter on board. We turned a 9.50 car into a deadly 10.00 index car with a 3000 launch chip, altering shift points and a bolt under the loud pedal. Class was a blast and extremely competitive. So keep most of the aftermarket electronics(and manufacturers), run heads up that makes more sense to the casual fan, and the only ones hurt are the throttle stop manufacturers. I would gladly put my stop in the trash can if everyone else did.

And another aside, Dragway 42 is running an 8 race index series with no stops or delay boxes. A little more challenging but level playing field for all. May be the way of the future to try and put some fans back into the stands.

I'll be straight forward with you, I issued the bounty for the class and was a little disappointed that there was no manual trans guys that were willing to run the class and go after the cash. I was in the stands with $10K to pay the racer to win. The definition of a Drag Race in the dictionary is an acceleration contest between two vehicles. The only Drag Racing occurring in SG class is between the fans leaving the stands and how fast they can clear out. Is that not an indicator as to whats wrong.....the fans leaving the stands when you run? I sure as hell feel it is! The next thing is lets put this in perspective of children running a foot race. Did you ever run a foot race and "Hold Back"? I doubt it! That's why it does not translate well. Lastly, the class is all about the last few feet at the stripe, where are the stands.......No wonder no one wants to watch this type of racing. They cannot see the action. It's not that I do not understand the class as I have my own SG car, its that I understand what Drag Racing is and maybe you do not. Lets logically think about the way the .90 classes are run. Originally SG was established as the premier Sportsman Class to showcase your skill with an index of 9.90 grown directly out of SoCal Pro Gas Association, not your electronics management class of today. The class was so beloved that EVERY SS/DI and National Dragster was filled with information and sponsors supporting this class up until Jegs built a car with a stop in the 90's. It was an all out class that was for the best of the best skilled sportsman. The cars were home built machines that used to leave tires up on the bumper and had tons of fans in the stands to cheer you on. Now its the opposite and you feel there is nothing wrong.....That's whats wrong, don't be so gullible. That is what I was attempting to fix. The Bounty will come back around and you will have another chance to win the cash, so be ready next time or call and get some clarification. There were many that fit within the rules, you just had to lose the stop and delay box. I want your class to Kick *** like it did before stops and electronics and was putting up an incentive for it to be that way again so you could remember what it was like to run the class with its original intent in mind. I was not discriminating against any racer or car, you just had to Man Up and run with some old school skill if you wanted my cash!

I admire what you've done, but with the grade point requirement it isn't like a bunch of guys could take their 4-speed car out of mothballs and enter the Winternationals.

I personally don't give a rip about spectators when I'm competing, but I'd lay much of the blame for spectator behavior on how the national events are marketed. All nitro, and every ticket's a pit pass so you can watch the guys rebuild them between runs! So, that's what the people watch.
