Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

Gotta love the photos of your dad's cars. What color was the '70 Chesrown car? It looks like it might have been matador red like my car? I purchased a DVD from Bud Lefebvre about a year or so ago that had a fair amount of Stock/Super Stock footage, and I recall that your dad was on a run or two, mainly at National Trails.

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

Jim the 70 car according to Dad was a one-off color for the auto show only, it was between red and orange also the stripes were carried over the roof and trunk same as SS chevelles. I remember when the car was delivered to Chesrown and dad took one look and didn't want it because it was so loaded it would have been way too heavy and it was a shame to tear it apart but the guy who delivered it said this is what olds sent and it was his. The car was later sold to a Dentist in Maryland? Sure would be nice to find it.

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

I remember reading an article that was printed about 1971 about a fellow named Jack Robinson that raced with your dad for a while that was a dentist. I think it was the same article that had a picture of your dad on top of the hauler with the '70 and '71 cars. Coincidence?

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

I forget to mention, Olds did have a red/orange special order color called Rallye Red that was only available on the 4-4-2 or W-31 that year.

Jim, that's right I just couldn't remember the name for a minute. I don't know if dad hasany color photo's or not of the 70 car he wasn't much on memorobilia.

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

I remember this car blinking the top bulb at National Trails long before most other racers understood how crucial reaction times and roll out was. In my opinion, he was one of the best and sent a lot of us home.

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

The Dentist was probably "Doc" Robinson, who also ran a blue, w/white fender stripes,"68 Ram Air 442. I would see the '68 car at Capitol Raceway. He hung-out with Sonny Freeman, who was sponsored by A.D. Anderson Olds on 25th. St. in Baltimore. Sonny had a yellow, w/black fender stripes, '68 Ram Air 442, both ran C/SA, (12.60's, or so) at that time(1968). They got new cars every year. Sonny's '69 Ram Air Cutlass was at the York show. The 69 ran a 350 and a 4 speed, in E/S. Man, those were the days!

I am not sure where this picture came from, but it is one of the only color shots I have of your fathers car.

I have color pictures of the '70 red with black stripes car, from the '72 U.S. Nat's. at Indy (IRP).
I will try to scan them this weekend.

Didn't a Ray Cramer end up with one of these 455 cars?

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

Chuck, I sure do miss racing with your Dad. Always interesting conversations with him and his contempt for the powers that be was legendary. I remember he was tearing down in Memphis one time and the tech guy asked him " is this supposed to be like this?" His answer was " You're the one tearing it down don't you know?"

Thanks tom, but I don't think that one is Dad. There was aChesrown dealership in Columbus and they had a driver too.

Bunkster.......I remember the 68 Hurst Olds that Ray Cramer had......It was in 1968 and he had it at the same time that Ron Gary had his.....It was an original silver and black one....Ray and I were good friends with Hillbilly Duncan....One day we were all at `Trails testing our cars and Ray offered my wife a ride in the passenger seat in that Hurst Olds........After a low 12 second pass she came back much more excited than I ever made her......Ray was one of those guys that made racing fun....

Chuck,

Have you seen the article in May 8 th, 2007 issue of Muscle Car Review that is about a 1968 Cutlass? It is just a short piece abourt a guy in Ohio finding a Car in the weeds that was raced as a Hurst Olds and had Chesrown on the doors and Ron Garey on the front fenders. They say that it sarted out as a red F-85 Police Interceptor.

Take Care,

Daren

The article in 1971 or 72 discussed Ron and Jack, rebuilding an engine in a hotel room, and had a photo of Ron with his arm up, car and transporter. Other photos showed rear suspension etc. IIRC, it was in SS&DI. I won't have access to my old magazines for a week or two.

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

Like the other 66 racers, Garey's car started as a regular 442 and was converted to W30 just before the NHRA Nationals in 66. The 54 factory W30s were produced to make the package stock legal. The conversion parts were also available through GMPD. Garey's 66 car was also featured in the SS&DI ad for their 67 SS Nationals, and held the SS/E record at 12.36 sec. The 66 W30 is unique in that Olds intended people to convert regular 442s. Virtually all other "special" or limited production cars had to be bought as such and then raced. The wrecked 68 car was rebodied in 2 weeks, and went on to win the Spring nationals at Englishtown.

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

Thanks all for the phot'os, first off let me say the wrecked 68 happened in Hyde Park dragway I was 11 years old know one would tell me what happened till they knew he was ok. If some of you remember the shut off was up hill and a car dumped a bunch of oil on the track but no one knew. The 68 Hurst car was not real as they never really made a post car, and that's the one the guy found in a field.

That 68 post car is the one Ray Cramer ended up with....there's a story behind that

Great pics and info. I never knew you Dad had a pair of shorts. I almost didn't recognize him without a cup of coffee and a Camel cigarette. Hope to see you somewhere soon. Later RJ Sledge

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

I sure do miss seeing Ron Garey at the races. I went to see him at his home in Cleburne a couple of years ago, we sat out in the garage and told jokes and I listened to old racing stories until we both gave out. One of the good ones (that I can put in print), was the time when he had a '56 Pontiac with a 3 speed stick on the column. He rigged up an oven door spring on the shift linkage and filed off the shift gate so that when he let go of the stick from low gear it would just pop into second.
I always looked up to the guys that came before I did (all except RJ Sledge), and it was a milemark when Ron Garey retired, he was real pioneer in Stock Eliminator.

Chuck Garey 01-27-2009 07:46 PM

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

Dad is definetly in a class by himself in my opinion, the 68 car had the spindles cut and extended 2 inches so the wheels would stay in the lights long before any one knew what roll out was. Also I don't know how many times people he beat couldn't understand how he beat them when they were faster. (Back when you ran off record). What's reaction time? Dad said the reaction time on time slips killed racing.

Re: Ron Garey's 68 olds

Ron Garey ...Definitely one of a kind .
I remember when he found an acid dipping place down there in Texas. That Buick's hood was kinda wavy. He told me he thought they left the bumper in there too long. I came out like tinfoil.
I asked him where he got the bucket seats for it. He said,...I don't know ,...outta something I had out in the yard...Toyota or something..
