Headers for 283/220

I am currently running cheap used headers off of eBay on my Chevelle, and before too long I'd like to switch to something better. The flanges aren't even straight on them, and I'm pretty sure the right bank leaks some.

At some point I imagine I'll see about custom headers but I think it'll be a while before that's in the budget. I'm hoping there's something off-the-shelf that will be significantly better.

One option I was thinking of is referenced in the current edition of Hot Rod where a tri-y header (Doug's I think it was) was used in an Engine Masters build. It has only 2.5" collectors but it didn't seem to bother their 353 inch engine and mine's only 293.

Another option beyond just the standard four tube offerings would be to buy four tube headers and cut off the collectors, then weld on merge collectors.

Any thoughts on this? And about how much do custom headers cost anyway?

When I ran my 283 I used 1 5/8 Hooker headers for a Monte Carlo and added flowmaster 4 to 2 to 2 1/2 collector worked good on my stick car

Will do, I was hoping I'd get some input from you.

Dave, your hot set up would be a nice used set of equal length Stahl headers and some collectors from Mark L. at Performance Welding. It takes time and testing but there is ET finding the right primary length and then hanging on some extensions to Marks collectors. I had the exact Stahl header you are needing but sold them last October......

Dave, try a Hooker Super Comp #2124 header. It's 1 5/8" primary tube dia. and there is enough length to try various length collectors. The #2116 header is 1 3/4" diameter, and the #5 spark plug and wire is almost inaccessible. The #2124 is also easier to install. Finding an optimum header for a Chevelle shouldn't be a huge issue.

Just a suggestion based on some positive results in the past.....Don't overlook finding some old M/T - Holley Tri-Y headers. Cheap enough to test. Just sayin'.
