1969 Mustang race car that I have owned since 1970

Mustang is back at the shop. Need to do a lot of work getting it ready to race in A/SA or B/SA. The 428 CJ will be on the dyno later this week. I painted this in 2005 using SPI clear and it has never been waxed. It has been in an enclosed trailer for 6 years in the Florida heat. I wasn't sure what to expect when we unloaded it. After washing it the paint still looks great.

Re: 1969 Mustang race car that I have owned since 1970

Hubert Platt told me he had a 1969 body for sale with no drive train. It was a Q code that had been used as a Boss 302 test car. It was built in Oct 1968 and had no quarter scoops, had the front fenders rolled, blacked out hood, deck lid, taillight panel and around the headlights. The quarter panels were made with no brackets for the scoops. Hubert saved it from the crusher

This was the first race after I turned it into a Super Stocker in July 1971 before paint.

I think it looks better without the wheels and tires used for storage

Picked up 12 hp with Harland Sharp rockers. Peak hp was at 5850 rpm now it has 512 at 6200 and 509 at 6500. We will be testing the PI aluminum intake next.

Pretty neat car. I worked on the stick shift test rollers at the end of the final line at Dearborn Assembly when that car was built.

Fitting Kirkey seats is not just a bolt in. The problem is the roll bar design won't let me have the seat back tilted enough so I will need to use a different steering wheel with less dish. We are mounting the Kirkey brackets to the stock seat tracks that will need to be modified.

Re: 1969 Mustang race car that I have owned since 1970

I have that seat in my 68 coupe, but my cage looks to be about 4 inches farther back than yours. I had to fabricate a four inch riser to set the Kirkey mounts on to get the height right. I used the Kirkey back brace. Quite an upgrade from the Jegs poly seats I used to run when I first built the car.

Good to see you dust this off. Keep us posted on your progress.

I never noticed that your car had ''Boss'' quarters on it. Has or will it ever be a problem with NHRA?

I raced in 1971 at Indy and the Grandnationals in Canada with no problem. Going through tech at the World Finals in Texas the Division 4 and 6 Tech Directors wanted me to install the scoops before they would let me race. Finally after a lot of discussion with the help of my Division 2 Tech Director they said I could race but not to show up at Pomona without scoops. We had to cut the quarters and fabricate a bracket to hold the scoops since my car was made without scoops. When I restored it in 2005 I filled in the scoops.

Today I installed a quick release steering wheel. It wasn't a simple bolt in.

Re: 1969 Mustang race car that I have owned since 1970

The steering column had to be cut about 3/8" for clearance for my fingers to be able to install and release the wheel. The first time I tried it once it snapped in place it almost cut my fingers. The original steering wheel nut that now holds the inner spline on had to be ground down because it did not allow the quick release adapter to go down far enough to snap into place. I bought a 3 bolt release because I already had a 3 bolt to 5/6 bolt steering wheel adapter. They make a 5 hole release but I have a 5 and 6 bolt wheel and wasn't sure which one I would be using. If I had to do it again I would buy the 5 hole and not have the additional 1/2" adapter.

I decided it was time to get it out of storage and start getting it ready for the 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet Reunion.

The wiring was done over 20 years ago and it's time to upgrade. I bought a Ron Francis race car harness and switch panel. I assembled the switch panel tonight after supper on the kitchen table.

Rusty. I was looking at some old ND's a while back and saw that you and I met in the final at a S/SS race at Warner Robins in about '71 and if I remember correctly you were in this car.

Hi Jimmy

If it was after July 1971 it would have been this car otherwise it would have been the SS/FA 1968 Mustang. Did you win??

Rusty, I'm sure it was early in the year, I won but probably had an advantage the way we raced back then. I had one of the first 220/283 '66 combos in this area, we were running off records then and I was pretty far under about that time.

This kind of thing happened a lot when I worked at Dearborn Assembly. A plant worker buying a new Mustang or Cougar was usually afforded the privilege of following his car down the assembly line. Sometimes that employees co-workers would add some extras. Convertible rocker boxes on hardtops and fastbacks was a popular "option". The required the carpet molded for that rocker box. A set of Boss quarter panels accidently ending up on your car or a Big E car would not be out of the question.

In the large repair bay at the end of the line a 428 ending up in a 390 car that lost it's engine on the test rolls happened a couple of times, too.

This was built in Oct 1968 before Boss 302's were built.

Cool I have never seen that one and it was taken in 1971. I had to have the quarter scoops added before I could race at an NHRA event in 1972.

Thanks,

Re: 1969 Mustang race car that I have owned since 1970

I bought this Q code 428 Mach 1 body that was used as a Boss 302 test car from Hubert Platt in 1970 and July 1971 turned it into a SS/GA that set the NHRA National record twice. I quit racing it at the end of the 1974 season. I painted it in my shop in 2005 close to the way it was raced in the 70's. At this time it is being updated to race in B/SA and will be at the 50th Cobra Jet Anniversary Reunion in Norwalk Ohio. This week in my spare time I sandblasted and painted the headers.

My seniority date at Dearborn Assembly was Sept 8, 1967. As I recall the Boss 302 didn't appear till Jan 1969. Everyone was excited about that. They were pretty cars.

OW!! DEJA VU! 1971. Had the big tube Doug Thorley crossovers like those for my '69 Fairlane Cobra. The heads had both bolt patterns and so did the headers. Eh, I was 20/21, used them all! Four bolts on each exhaust port. Dang sure never leaked! Took several different combos of tools to get it done.

Very nice car

what cylinders switch sides? Doesn't make sense to me to only swap one cyl from each bank.
15426378 firing order, you still end up with two cylinders firing back to back.

What am i missing?

Just googled it, back cyl on each bank.
So, cyl 5 and then 4 fire back to back in the left collector.
Then cyl 8 and 1 fire back to back in the right collector.

What did that improve?

Re: 1969 Mustang race car that I have owned since 1970

Not being an expert, I can only guess it was a fitment issue. The 2 1/8 inch rear pipes would really be short compared to the other six without crossing over. Pretty tight back there on these cars. Mine came with the car when I bought it.
