Powerglide first gear

So I am thinking of getting a powerglide for my car, it weighs 3024 with me, I run super street, only have about 500 hp in a small block. what first gear would be best?, it has 4:56 rear gears
Thanks in advance
Marty

What transmission are you currently running? What ET and MPH?

I'd agree with the 1.98's but you need to know your torque readings or have a good idea that you can stand that kind of drop when you go into 2nd. Be prepared for the car to slow down if you had a good 3 speed before.

Yeah, I can't imagine a 3000+ pound car with 500 hp is very far below the index as it is.

With a 1.98 first gear and 4.56 in the back, it will work the same on the starting line as it would with a standard 1.76 first gear and 5.13 in the rear. The 1.76 combination would recover better on the shift also.

I doubt a 500 hp motor will like a lot of RPM, but there are a lot of variables.

Right now a c4- only have 1/8 mile data right now last weekend flat out was 6:58 @ 103 mph. Going to test 1/4 mile this weekend.

Thanks for the info

Your going to slow down your C-4 is plenty good for your weight and power.

More gears better in that weight range but probably regardless if set up.

I'd stay with the C4 with the power level you have , No problem hitting the .500 tree with that combo.
I have several Super Street customers who run 3 speed transmissions because their car is a heavy weight .
If it was my car ,I'd keep the C4.

Re: Powerglide first gear

My Super Street car weighs 3575# and runs a 1.80 glide with 4.30 rear gears. I have more power but because of the weight I am only a little quicker on ET. Runs right around 10.30 wide open and goes 10.90 at about 127.

With a Pro Tree transbrake I am leaving at 3800 RPM with .050-.060 in the box, so no problem cutting a light.
