I was racing back then. Bracket racing came along. The slow guys all went bracket racing, instead of learning why they were slow, and working harder. They went where they could run fast enough to win a round with no effort. If you could not run your record, you usually lost first round. We ended up with very low car counts. NHRA had to dumb it down to get the car counts back up.

You guys start some of the weirdest sheet, then complain about it. I know it's easy to be a NHRA conspiracy theorist but damn, ain't no way in hell NHRA will do this. Use your imagination. No, wait, you already are. Pretty soon they're gonna let any engine in any car. Right? Oh wait....that's Pro Stock. Doesn't affect us tho'! Right? You guys that are thinking "I might need to take someone for a 1/4 mile ride in my trunk" well, that's just wrong.

Ed, that's a little harsh. "Back in the day" the old S/SS Racers weren't exactly open with their tricks and manipulations of the rules. It's not as easy to hide now with the internet and stuff.
Bracket Racing got it's boost (at least in the northeast) when the car counts went down and the Track Operators (not NHRA) phased out their S/SS programs and replaced them with a Bracket program.

OBTW, I was Racing an R/SA 66 Impala and driving it to High School during the week. One day I asked a "Prominent" Jr. Stock Racer if he could help me. The answer? "Sure kid, just tape a $100.00 bill to your air cleaner and I'll help you".
I went Bracket Racing until I learned what I was doing.

It was the track owners. We used to run Stock, Super Stock & Modified at weekly events back then. When bracket racing showed up at Tulsa, that is where the slow guys went.
I asked a couple why they were lined up with the bracket cars in the staging lanes. "I can run fast enough here." Was the answer I got more than once.
It is what happened around here. Did not need to hire sharp tech guys, no tear downs, etc. Was simpler for the track, plenty of cars. This was mid/late '60s. Used to run Stock first & third Sunday's here at Tulsa, same at Fort Smith, AR the other sundays. Good old days. May sound harsh, that is what happened. James Lee & I appeared to take turns as winner & runner up.

Back in the early '60's I ran a new Corvette in A/SP. When I won I got a dinky little trophy. The only time I could win money was at old San Gabriel in street eliminator. It paid $25.00 but you had to run a dot tire. I ran Casler cheater slicks. I couldn't afford real slicks. About '64 or '65 along came bracket racing. My little brother bought a new Mustang and started winning bigger trophies and money with his shoe polish. It was kinda disheartening.

I was a track owner when S&SS went away at the local level. It was just about participation. Cost and technology drove out the weekend warrior. Between Hallsville and Whitehouse we started our own index type classes. (back then we had no idea what index racing was)We called it Street Modified. It was based on Lbs. per cu in and an index with your own personal record. It worked pretty good and was a crowd pleasing show. It still took a good racer and some real car preparation for performance. When participation dropped we went to bracket programs and once a month Modified and Gas shootouts(Meets). It wasn't un common to have many NHRA National record holders and event winners in the 16 car field. When I was running I-20 in 1977 I had an ALL Corvette Modified and Gas Meet. I think there was about 20 or 22 of them trying for a 16 car field. a lot of Quality cars.. Man, what a show.

For one I can’t take anyone seriously that can’t use their real name on here. Second you truly think this is even kind of a good idea ( Ruler ) you should get in your car and drive to there nearest cliff and drive off it. I’m amazed really you have made it this long in life without walking around and getting hit by a bus ? Geeesh

Wait maybe Ruler is a good name for you like Ruler of the land of dumb ideas. If guys can’t qualify for Indy spend some money and work on your stuff. Holy crap it’s like the Oprah show with your ideas. Everyone look under your seat YOU GET A INDEX , you get a index , you get an index !!!

Holy crap man what’s next entry fees based on income ? Free race fuel for everyone? Sounds like the NDHRA National Socialism Hot Rod Association

Agree about the silly screen names.

Anybody that can not run under these indexes has problems other than money.
IHRA indexes were even softer than NHRA last time I ran with them.
Three tenths softer at that time.
