Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
It's nice to know some of you still remember me. It's nicer to know that I'm still alive. My son Scott is still doing front ends and outher suspension work, on superstock and streetrods. We both now live in BelAir ' Maryland. I now have a 1965 Elcamino Pro/Street vehicle for show and crusing.
Amyone intersted, I will be in Ocean City Md. May 15 - 18 for CRUSIN Ocean Cuty. The ElCamino is red you can't miss it. |
Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Mr. Arnew, If you ever get a chance to attend any NHRA events, it would be an honor to have a beer with you, and talk about some old friends. Check out eastcoaststocksuperstock.com. Dave Ley runs a great association that races mostly at Atco. Please try to attend a race, and see some of your old customers.

Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
I remember Jack Arnew.I brought my SS/L 1966 Chevy II down to him for front end work just before a points race at Englishtown or Summernationals of 1981.I will never forget when I dropped the car off he told me I could not hang around so go see a movie somewhere and be back in a few hours. His secrets stayed secrets.I was so nevous I did not know if my car was going to be there or not when I returned. And you could not return early or he would tell you to stay away.
Thoughts like that I will never forget and also learned from the experience. Ronn Brigham 1004 |

Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Back in 1972 I was involved with building a '71 Duster for SS/IA. I lived in the Rockville MD area and took the stock rear axles to Jack to have him convert the screwy Mopar 4" bolt circle to a more usable 4.5" pattern so that we could use a readily available wheel. That was when back when S/S was almost what Stock is today and you couldn't just get a pair of axles made without selling your first-born.
I remember the trip really well since I got stuck in traffic in the Baltimore bay tunnel and damn near melted the engine in my hot-rod street car. I still haven't cooled off from running the heater full blast in the middle of summer in that damn tunnel. I think it was running on about two cylinders when I finally made it to the end. If I remember right, Jack's shop was the first exit off the interstate after the tunnel and I was able to limp in there unassisted. It doesn't seem that long ago (yeah, right), but I wonder how many guys remember the Chryslers using left hand lug nuts on one side of the car and right hand on the other? Those Chrysler engineers really had some whacko ideas. Glad to see that Jack is still feeding the racecar fever. |
Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Bill, I remember those left hand lug nuts very well. How many times did a
tire shop monkey twist them off trying to loosen them to rotate tires? :) |
Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Jack (Mr. Arnew),
Do remember you at Dover Drag Strip, Wingdale, NY (68' or 69') with the beautiful 68' Hemi Cuda. Keystones up front, and steel-wheels back? Can't remember, 4-speed or automatic. Dover regulars; Charlie Castaldo's, Hemi Dart John Macey, "Heads Up", Hemi Cuda (SS/BA) Oh, us too. 67' Cuda, 273 J/S (68'), K/S (69'-71') And so on......... Found an article, with the car named "Poor Boy". Is that correct? Paul |
Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Jack,
I remember quite vividly the first time I came down there with my SS/KA Duster, slept in my truck on the side of your station, and after getting the car on the rack in the early AM, being terrified watching you (Unlike Ronnie Brigham, you did not throw me out: Must be a Mopar Vs. Chevy thing LOL) cutting and sectioning the upper control arms, and then working the torch, and what seemed to be a 20 foot breaker bar on the lower ball joint arms to correct the toe pattern. I kept my poker face on, but inside I was saying "Will this car ever be right again?". Well, right is was. It was worth an immediate .15. I was in shock. As you may recall, I subsequently became one of your un-official "ambassadors", and brought several other cars down there for the same "treatment". Good to see you are doing well! Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Hey Jack! Do you have any Jack Arnew Suspension Systems decals from the 60's left? I run a N/SS 66 Chevelle SS, and I think it would be appropriate to display them for the Nostalgia series. You probably know most of the competitors. The 422 Allstars series is run by Rich Lamont, and Dink Bishop. My cell # is 410-371-2818. Thanks, John.

Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Jack,
Where are you? Clayton (Mr. Wright), Are you the famous "SLO-MOTION" of B-Body Mopar fame. I'm sure you are:). Was that one of the original 72 factory cars or did you get one from another racer? Ever at Dover, NY??? Jack, Found an old Maryland newspaper article. Your Cuda ran a 10.70 @ 130.64 in Maryland (Capitol Raceway?), in 69'. Thats-A-Flying:eek: Have several photo's of you at Dover, somewhere in our old Kodak carousel slide pictures. When you were there in 68' or 69'? Maybe even 70'? Paul |

I remember Bob Gipson telling me about you Jack. He bought a SS/JA 65 Nova in the late 70's. He tubbed it and then bought all new front end stuff and drove out to have you sort out the front end stuff. He never regretted the trip from Illinois. It left a lasting impression on me. I am glad you are still out there having fun.

Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Jack, I was wondering if you were going to be in Ocean City for the Endless Summer Cruise in two weeks. I wanted to talk to you about a 60 Corvette Super/Stock project. I have already performed some caster enhancements, I wanted to see if I could teach an old dog new tricks. Anyway, I could always use some front end tips from the master. I should be there by Wedensday, and maybe we'll go for a ride in this, it's alot of fun and it's got a five speed stick!......Wade

Wade I have been to the last 4 ocean city shows, will not be ready this time. I 'm in process of installing a blower and won't be done in time. But I will come just to see what's new and admire the vast amount of
cars that show up for the week end. I know your car well, have seen it at the inlet and Hooters. I will look you up and we will talk. see you at the ocean.. . |

Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Mr. Arnew,
I thought I'd put you back on top of the thread-page, where you belong. OK, Your 68' Hemi Cuda. Visited Dover Drag Strip, New York, probably early 1970. The Sunday was a little cold. Your car was the Sox & Martin SS/B car. Which won the 69' Springnationals (June 69) 69' Indy Nationals (September 69') 69' World Finals (October 69') Does that sound correct. I know Sox & Martin had a couple of 68' cars, for Match-Race Events and AHRA Meets. Dover had several good S/S ($$$) events back in 70', when they were NHRA-sanctioned. Your Cuda had the familiar center white-stripe and Keystones. A Bill Stiles Performance front license-plate. OH, I almost forgot. The front wheels were off the ground. Paul |
Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???

Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Frank, you never know, Give me a phone call, My cell # is on the previous thread, looks like I may go back to work at something I realy like to do. My son and I still have all the equiptment in his shop .He has been doing a few cars as time permits him , due to his outher employment.
I'm going to try to make Maple Grove this weekend. |
Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Mr. Arnew, I never got to meet you personally, but do remember you racing, in the late 60s and early 70s in super stock. Do you remember who bought the 68 Cuda from you, when you sold it and who might have the cuda now if it still exists. This is great stuff to thihk that 150 original cars started all this 40 years ago and we still are talking about it.
|
Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
I sold my 68 cuda in late 1973, it went to Al & Bobby Carpenet they lived in Washington Pa.When I delivered the car they had a Plymuoth wing car in the garage. Don't know if they still have that one, but I know they still have the cuda. I talked to them about a year ago. I know it's not gone racing for a few years. Last time I saw any pictures it was at the York Pa show 3 or 4 years ago. SURE WISH I HAD IT NOW !

Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Jack,
Your all over the place now. 71' Pro/Stock meet at Dover (May 71' ) Participants; Ken Montgomery, 68' Cuda (w/69' trim and trunk molding) Bill Stiles 70' Duster (w/71' grille) Ed Miller 70' Duster MIMI (69' Camaro) Does that sound close? OH, You must have been in Pro/Stock. Your Cuda had a fiberglass spoiler under the front splash-pan. Also, in the photo, you can see a buckle in the rear quarter-panel above the tire. Looks like the rivet-pins were under a little stress:eek: As for some paint details. You car had the center-stripe on the hood as well as over the roof. The Sox & Martin (68' Indy car) had only the hood stripe. Damn, How many cars did Sox & Martin have. Heard they got an early Christmas present from Chrysler as the 1968 production year ended in August/September:D Paul |
Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Paul, i'll try to contact the Carpenet brothers an get the vin # from the car, with that we may solve the question as to which vehicle realy did win the 68 nationals. Did not make Maple Grove thought it vwas going to be a rain out for sure. Saw some pictures on the net and am suprised they got to run Sunday at all. From the shots looks like you could do deep sea fishing in the pits!!!

Re: Anyone remember Jack Arnew ???
Jack,
Found some film of the 1970 Pro Stock Circuit Event at Dover Drag Strip, in April 1970. Got you running a 10.33 in defeating Ken Montgomery's Barracuda in Round 1. The week earlier, you won the first ever NHRA Pro Stock Circuit event at Cecil County. Round 2 you missed a shift, and got beat by Bob Banning (Dart). pc |
