Add mine(new to me in August) the ex-Mccollum( 77-2017) E/SA 66 SS L-79 to the list, I titled it in Mass, just picked up the # matching motor from the second owner, who raced it in B-Modified. F0108ZI the real deal.... Lee likely saw him at Dover, Joe Keller....sold car in 74/5 to a speed shop who pulled the motor and built a stock legal motor for A/S.........they deemed the .060 over # matching motor junk for their purposes and gave it back to him for his Tbucket project...... He kept it safe, never installed it, didn't want to tear it apart and mill the 12-1 pistons, so there it sat, and moved 1200 miles or so south with him to Florida..... Fast forward to 2020 and I get really really lucky and find him from a 1968 registration, get the racing story, pictures of this matching # motor, we strike a deal and I drove to florida last week, motor safely home. Met the old racer got a couple of photos, and even the M&H slicks and rims he used, and some other assorted original parts. Not your average story, in this most challenging of years, a nice National Dragster worthy feel good story! Eric |

I do remember that car.

Re: # of original L79 Novas and Z28's in stock and superstoc
I know very well what happened to one of the L-79 cars, I had a blue w/black interior super sport L-79 in the early seventies and for some reason or another I pulled the engine and trans and put a 327 glide in it to run in stock eliminator. My wife, Sandra, drove quite a bit in that era and made a run in the car that turned really bad, she turned it over and totaled it. She was ok but the car was junk and I gave the roller to Sherman Adcock, Sr and he used as much of the skin as he could on his round track car. The original motor also went to a round track racer. It still hurts when I think about it but these cars were fairly plentiful in that time frame and I had a red SS L-79 not long after then. I have some pictures somewhere of the car after the after accident condition.

Re: # of original L79 Novas and Z28's in stock and superstoc
Cool story Eric, explains your original post. Graduating from HS in ‘67 (when muscle cars ruled the earth, well at least the well-worn circuit around every small town) I had my share of street encounters with those cars, indeed a neat package.
Jimmy, just knew you’d have had a couple of them too. |

My 69 Camaro is also a 69 Z28, code X33. I have had the car since 1971 it was light green metallic w/black strips and white interior. Started racing early 80s in stock then in the late 80s repainted it, I have run mostly in H/SA threw the years. Still having FUN ! Dan Lynch 1525

71's were rarer than the 70's, my first "real" car was a 70 Z28, with a M-22, loved the howl of that tranny. Fun nice driving car......decent at 120 plus......not so good in the rain. If I could have bought a similar 67-9 Z it would have been 20K back in 1990, which I couldn't swing, IF I could even had found one, in my autohunter weekly. A fresh college grad makes the most of the situation. Traded the Z28 for a 68 GTX 440 4speed and cash my way we used for my first wedding. Sold the 68 GTX back to its original owner when I needed dough for graduate school. Miss the street cars, but not the tickets. Eric |
Re: # of original L79 Novas and Z28's in stock and superstoc
Not sure if it is still being raced but the late Peter Moran's '69 Camaro H/SA Indy winner was a real "Z". When it came to me for converting to a stocker it still had all the badging, tach, trim plate, etc. Another car that I'm not sure if it is still racing was a '69 Z"' car that I ran in SS/D back in the late seventies, Bobby Warren ran it for a while after that and the last I knew of it Harold Stout had it and it was painted in his usual livery, The late Sonny Ray ran it some as did David Rampy.

This is my Z/28, pretty much all original, the car is an original Baldwin Chevrolet Z/28 so I don't get too far from the way it came, so everything in the car works. The car has full exhaust along with the radio, heater, horn and windshield wipers that all work. The car is register and insured as a legal street car. I've own the car for just under 50 years now.

I have mentioned this before but I remember Casey racing that car at Dover Drag Strip in the early seventies. I love early (67-70) Z28 cars.

My Dad's old 66 L79 Nova is still being raced. My dad's cousin bought it new. My dad bought it from him when he turned 16 in '71. He drove it in high school and then started racing it in Stock and then Super Stock.
When he started his own business he didn't have time to race so my grandfather started racing it. He pulled out the 350hp engine to chance class and put in a powerglide. eventually he built a GT car with an 80's camaro and eventually sold the Nova since he wasn't using it at the time and didn't tell my dad about it. It's now owned by Sean Gaffney who still races it. https://classracer.com/classforum/at...2&d=1605558909 https://classracer.com/classforum/at...3&d=1605558909 |

Jim got his original Z/28 back a few years ago and has been turning it back into a street, S/SS car. He began racing pretty much as soon as he bought it. Sold it in 79 to build the Opel. The title is still in his name as it has been a race car its whole life. 27K on the odometer.
