How about Peter Biondo & Philip Monteith's 428-powered Firebird. That should be a good start.

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
From a winning aspect, it would be Monteith/Biondo. But for performance my vote is Bob Cruzen. He went 8.90 @ 146.13 first round of class at Indy in GT/AA 2016. To my knowledge this was the first time a Pontiac ran in the eights at an NHRA meet with a Quadrajet. The late Frank Grossi was the first Quadrajet Super Stocker to dip in the eights but that was with a Chevy.

https://www.classracer.com/classforu...9&postcount=24 The first one I remember was the H-O Racing Specialties red '74. It was a record holder. We saw it at the '78 Cajun Nats. I've read that it is the same car that J.B. Clegg has, & has raced, with a 4-speed. John Clegg raced a '73. J.B. Raced it this season. I think J.B. has got both cars down near the mid 9's. |

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Bob has had lots of Pontiac Stockers, for sure.
Not aware of his SS Pontiacs. Don Kennedy’s first Pontiac Super Stocker, 73 Firebird 455 SD, was purchased from Bob Michaels. Don, Fred Rector and I drove Dons ramp truck non stop, except for gas, from Farmington New Mexico to Lexington Ky to look at the car. It was during the Kentucky Derby and there wasn’t a motel room to be found. Finally found one in Frankfurt and grabbed a few hours sleep. Bob met us at the track and made a pass with the car, went an 11.0 then he let Don make a pass. Don went a 10.99 and that’s all it took. Fred and I looked at each other and without a word walked to the ramp truck to get ready for loading the car. Bob wasn’t sure what was going on but we knew it was a sale! Long trip back, straight through again. 3000 miles round trip. Ah to be young! This was 1980 or 81. Sorry Don, I couldn’t resist telling that story. Kelly |

"...drove Dons ramp truck non stop, except for gas, from Farmington New Mexico to Lexington Ky..."
Love stories from the "good ole days". Would also LOVE to see the pics. I'm probably not the only guy here who likes to see the old pics. I even like pics of the ramp trucks & open trailers the cars were hauled on. " and hauling that yacht in a Bus! " It was a different world from the motor homes & fancy enclosed trailers of today's racing world. |

Runs the '74 GTO in a GT class. Guessing he runs a '74 400 engine in it, using what he's learned from running a 400 in the A-body. |
Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Not the fastest, but if there is a cleaner, more detailed Super Stock Pontiac than Div. 7s Art Petersons 68 or 69 GTO, I would be suprised.

Use to be quite a few 389 wagons in competition.
Here's one that is shown to have been a record holder from '65 thru '80, except for 2 years. Who can give us details ? |

The pics I have of a Billy Foder car are of a Stocker. I think I posted a pic of a car with someone else's name on the door, which I have listed as Bill Foder driving. So, maybe somebody else has pics & info. I know Mike McKinney won the US Nats in the '68 Bird Stocker he bought from Truman Fields. That same year, Truman won his Stock class, in the Bird the McKinney's had traded him, in that earlier deal. If the Mckinney's had other Pontiac drag cars, I'd like to know about 'em. |

I suppose those S/S & S/SA cars from the early '60's are considered Super Stock cars. Lots of big Pontiacs did well in those classes.
Looks like I've already used most of my pics of these old cars. But here's some of Carol Cox, who won her S/SA class at the '62 Winter Nats & the US Nats. Her husband, Lloyd, drove the M/T A/FX Tempest to the class win at the US Nats. The M/T Pontiac powered dragster also won. So, Pontiacs did good at the big race, in '62. She was actually the 1st woman to win a class at a National event. https://www.nhra.com/news/2018/carol...t-class-winner https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carol_Cox |

Can't discuss Super Stock Pontiacs without mentioning the '69 RAIV Bird, driven by Keri Angeles.
I've read that she made the 1st 9 sec pass by any non-GT Super Stock Pontiac. "...FEBRUARY 4TH, 2000 POMONA, CALIFORNIA - N.H.R.A. WINTERNATIONALS KERI ANGELES DROVE HER FATHERS 1969 R.A.FOUR FIREBIRD TO A RECORD SETTING 9.99 E.T. TO BECOME THE FIRST EVER N.H.R.A. SUPER STOCK 400 INCH PONTIAC INTO THE NINE SECOND ZONE. CONGRATULATIONS JOHN, MELINDA, KIM, AND KERI FOR ACHIEVING A LIFETIME GOAL TO BE THE FIRST S/S CATEGORY CAR, (NOT A G.T.,) TO GET IN THE NINES. TO PROVE IT WASN'T A FLUKE, THEY CAME BACK IN THE FIRST ROUND OF ELIMINATIONS FRIDAY MORNING TO WIN WITH ANOTHER 9.99 AND THEN, IN THE THIRD ROUND, WENT A 9.98!..." |

I think somebody mentioned Robert Cruzen's 428 powered Cobalt, which has run some high 8 sec passes.
That alum head 428 is quite popular, in GT cars. Since the 428 was not available in an A or F body, I don't know of anybody running a 428, except in GT. But, since a 428 was available in a '69 GP, I assume that maybe somebody ran one of those, somewhere back in the old days. Anybody know of a non-GT car running a 428 ? Here are pics of Robert's car as well as Todd Frantz's Cobalt. Don't know how many non-Pontiac bodies are now running the Pontiac 428 engine. The GT rules allow LOTS of different combos. I like the idea of being able to run the older engines in later model bodies. Just curious. For you guys who were in SS, back when they came up with the GT rules, was there a lot pushback from the regular SS guys ? And, exactly what year did the GT rules go into effect ? |
Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
The '63 Blue Catalina wagon is probably the Larry Pacey car out of the Miami area. He ran it in Div II for several years and set the record at will.
