Water in radiator rusty looking
What do you all put in water in radiator to keep from getting rusty looking? I took motor out and apart for some head work and the water looks like it came out of a old tractor that been setting for years. Motor was only together for 9 months. It is a dart block

Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
How do you clean out a rusty cooling system like the one described above. I'm looking to clean it in the car, not tear down the engine. Thanks

We used this for a while . Still have 5 or 6 bottles around here somewhere. Works well, but it foams a little in a unpressurized system ..We only used half a bottle per fill |
Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
I never leave the water in my engine

Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
I thought using thread cutting oil in radiator. 1 shot glass worth

I used Justice Brothers products because I sold them and they worked well. Any quality anti-rust product should prevent the coolant from turning to mud. |
Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
Could you use CLR safely to clean? I always thought if you drain water and let metal sit exposed to air it would promote rust
|
Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
You can put about a gallon of cleaning vinegar in the radiator and let it circulate for 5 or so minutes and let it sit over night and then water hose it out then fill the system with fresh water and circulate that for 5 or so minutes and dump it. It will clean out the rust and scale in the block and radiator, you just to flush it ienough to get the water back neutral.

Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
I trailered my old boy's Roadrunner Stocker to a radiator shop when he let it sit over a year with water in it.....They back flushed the system and that seemed to help out.
Although if it was seriously rusted = I suppose you could blow out a freeze plug that way! |
Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
I actually added some cascade dishwashing powder to an old motor and it made a difference.

Thanks for the help

Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
I took my radiator to be cleaned at a reputable radiator shop. Although it used to be TABOO, many racers put a quart or so of antifreeze in the water....

Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
I'm on the verge of ordering Evans Waterless Coolant for my cars. Thoughts or experience with that coolant?

Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
I use 2 bottles of Gunk Water Pump Lube. Goes in like milk. Comes out the same in the fall. Done it for years. No rust whatsoever? I still use a stock radiator.

Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
Learned and used vinagar years ago. Someone put trans fluid instead of toyota red coolant in a corolla. I had to flush it out and used the clear vinegar and wuite a bit for this mess. Those jobs never went back to the mess makers, lol.
Took a few doses but car was eventually good w patience. |
Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
Your results may vary, all I can tell you is what worked for me. Years of rust in the radiator with a SBC with iron heads and aluminum radiator. I tried every combo of additives and lubes from water pump lube to lucas additive and others in between and still had rust, always used distilled water. One year I actually read the directions on the bottle of Lucas coolant additive and it said do not use distilled water. Since then I use Lucas additive with gallon bottles of store bought drinking water. No more rust.

Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
FYI, the waterless coolant is basically RV anti-feeze. it will not cool unless you used a 20 lb or higher rad. cap. most rads. will not take that kind of pressure. I use that RV AF in my solar hot water system. believe me, it absorbs a lot of heat. but getting rid of the heat using the RV AF is not easy

Re: Water in radiator rusty looking
We used a Prestone product with pure tap water that was a rust inhibitor and water pump lubricant that worked pretty good. Haven't been able to find it as of late, Prestone may have quit making it. All cooling systems believe it or not will have a small amount of electricity running through it so, you have a small amount of electrolysis taking place feeding on the engine block and causing the water to rust up. We have been using the Red Line product, Water Wetter as of late. It seems to work pretty well.
