Englishtown Closed To Drags

Can't get a confirmation if true or they're rebuilding the track.

Re: Englishtown Closed To Drags

i just happened to drive by the track today, there is absolutely nothing that would indicate the track is closing, or anything else, also no construction or demo equiptment that was in sight

They have many events posted on their Facebook Page, 1 in march. They are always late posting their schedule, 1 year they posted only march and april and did not post rest till april

It would be sad to loose a facility like that one. I hope, for everybody involved, that it does not happen.

Maybe there just closed due to the winter and cold weather.

Re: Englishtown Closed To Drags

Rumors of closing were flying around Sat .before the Div. banquet . Although nothing was said publicly ,a few people who have real connections to the track said that one of the dirt tracks is being moved or changed and someone drew the usual January forecast of doom for the dragstrip.

there is a story about the track closing right here on class racer magazine, who are the supposed insiders that gave out this information?

If it did happen it would be a huge blow to Div 1, what other Div 1 track could host a National Event.

What?! No Snowmobile Drags?

Re: Englishtown Closed To Drags

It is annoying that there are always rumors, but no one ever wants to reveal their " source " on where they heard it. This has been going on for years, and last year on facebook someone said that they had inside info last year would be the final year for drag racing, but motocross and drifting would still be around. When they were confronted on the source, they just got quiet and dissapeared. I"ve heard this rumor over and over since I've been racing there in the 80's. I don't know who wrote the article in classracer magazine, but I'm sure it's another reliable source.

Why was the divisional race moved from September to June?

Re: Englishtown Closed To Drags

Take it for what it's worth but, I have some close friend / next door neighbors who now run in the 10.00 index class with drag racing but, grew up running quads at E-Town at the track on your right hand side as you come in. They still race quads but, went to E-Town in October to run their quads and were told this would be the last event at the MX Track as of 2017 as they were tearing down the MX Track, Drag Strip & Airport to build a development and 2018 will be the last event for the Strip. They were moving the dirt over to the other MX Track and going to push to get a AMA National Event there and keep the drifting track operating. I would assume Tommy Franklin taking over VMP and repaving the whole track I think you will see the National there. Like I said I know there has been millions of rumors about this track but, I'm thinking these might be very true but, time will tell.

what a shame...why has such a historic facility fallen into hard times?

With NYC becoming so expensive to live in anymore, most people move to that area and commute into NYC. I remember going as a kid and the houses were regular one-story houses and a lot of trees, nothing was built up there. Now you go into the track, it's multi-million dollar mansions, townhomes and a lot of corporate business, so knocking down a track is more land for them to build, build, build. I also heard the taxes for the facility are so insane from the township that it's tough to make a profit to keep up on facility needs such as paving, painting, etc.

I don't know anything about rumors, but NHRA has the national event on their schedule for this season June 7th-10th.

A few track employees posted on face book before midnight that they were notified by englishtown owners no more job , no more drag racing. Press release supposed to be on Wednesday morning.
This may be in the top 5 saddest moment in my life if it’s real!

Re: Englishtown Closed To Drags

I believe that what's taking place is that they're going to lease part of the property to some Auction Company that's going to stockpile Insurance cars for auction, so now Old Bridge is going to have a ****box junkyard. I live in Old Bridge and now I could just see my taxes going up, they aren't bad enough, going to be even worse, and a lot of businesses in town are going to suffer, but I guess the owners just want to sit back and let the money roll in. I bet Vinnie and Richard are rolling in their graves now

Some of us older types might remember pulling into NY Nat'l in 1979? 80? and driving past the foundations to future housing development on the property.

Re: Englishtown Closed To Drags

I can almost understand giving up the continuous fight to keep the dragstrip open , but I am amazed that they will continue with the drift track which in my eyes is obnoxious beyond belief with constant noise and ridiculous amounts of smoke for hours on end.
I guess the Napp's see that as the future of Motorsports.

Carl Juliano 01-17-2018 11:10 AM

Re: Englishtown Closed To Drags

I agree with both of you Tom, and Ed. Leasing the property brings in big, steady income without a fight. Years of noise complaints, legal battles and tight curfews finally made them say "to hell with it". Its sad, and annoying but I cant say I'm shocked.

Run 2 at Epping or Maple Grove, like Charlotte. Area tracks should benefit from local programs, as well.

Where is (was) the Local Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Board, Restuarant-Motel owners association? These entities should be our friends, advocates.....housing cars do not spend money as we do....I make it a point to mention to the motel/eateries, etc that I am spending $ with them as I attend to local track....

The Problem with Long Island is the toll & traffic to get into the city. I have a few .90 racers in my series who come from LI and the horror stories about traffic and how much they spend in tolls will make anyone cringe and not want to go.

I understand that but we have thousands of racers already on the island, they would provide the day in day out money that would keep the track running, and if it can get a couple larger events a year it would do great. We've already have a task force formed by the county legislature office to help fins a suitable piece of land, and are talking with a lot of towns to try to find a place that will work, the more people that we can get to join shows that it is a serious effort.

Kind of a ho-hum statement from NHRA, would have thought that based solely on the revenue the National event generated that they would have stepped up to assist the Napp family....with the great car counts and crowds seen in Division 1 you'd have thought they wanted more than just Epping and Maple Grove National events; perhaps they will step up with more later.

Re: Englishtown Closed To Drags

The first race I ever attended was at Englishtown in 1970. I raced there every year from 1976 to 1997, except for one. The majority of my wins, including my first and last were there. Its the only place I raced a 'legal' class, and the site of my only final at either an NHRA National or Divisional event. I represented it six times at the Bracket Finals and I have a storage bag with all the team jackets I earned.

Even though its been two decades since I stepped foot on the property I'm still proud of what I accomplished there and I'll miss it .

My man GET REAL. The politicians are USING YOU.
You guys have been through this fake bs.
We ain’t getting a track on Long Island
You have no $$$ No Land. No Clue.
Your numbers are inflated. It’s Facebook support. nNot Reality
You guys didn’t support Westhampton. Or English Town
Now we got we we have. NOTHING

Re: Englishtown Closed To Drags

The big question I have is where does this leave dragracing. The economy is pretty good, fuel prices low. A track can make more money leasing asphalt than running drag races, hope this is not a trend.
