What if NHRA granted you a 20% reduction on h.p. on any ....

...combination currently eligible in the classification guide with 2 stipulations :

1. The combo must not have made one single pass under index at any national event, divisional event, or national open in the last 5 years ? (dormant combos)

2. The only racers that can submit that one request must have entered at least one NHRA race ( National, div. or Nat. open ) in the last 5 years

What would be your pick ?

I wonder how many new combos we would see ?

My pick would be the 2003 Mustang GT manual trans @ 260 hp.
That P.I. 2V modular looks like it has potential, plus those cars just look great.

I looked thru some stats in the G/S thru J/S from years past and did not see where anyone has tried that combo.

How about 1969 Boss 429 in SS. At 20% off would be 344hp.

61 bubbletop with a 348/250. 250 minus 20%? 200 HP, yeah that would fly and look coooool.

Heck of a reduction. Why would anything get a 20% reduction?

LOL...Good try Mike, but I feel confident in saying there has been at least one pass under index with that combo in the last 5 years. ;)

This is a (just for fun) thread Ed.

The tech department may not like a bunch of new combos to have to study up on.
But then again, they might welcome the challenge ?

We all know that it is unlikely NHRA would allow a 20% decrease, but it does raise the question of what combo would be the most fun to try.

IMO, I feel that almost every combo that has not been tried in the last several years ( or never has been tried at all ) is because the combo is over factored to begin with and racers feel it would be a waste of time and money to try it.

Nice.

And a more modern version that would be fun to try is a '03-'04 Terminator Cobra @ 390 h.p. and after reduction = 312 hp

[QUOTE=Mark Yacavone;521696]Question is...Why did?

426 Street Wedge, 365/291

That's 20-21[/QUOTE
It uses the same heads, cam and 565 CFM carb as the early 383 which was unusable until it was defactored to 280 HP. The only advantage the 426 has over the 383 is it can fit a little more duration, with identical cams both engines would make almost identical HP. I did this test in my Sport Fury back in 73 to prove a point to some friends. I had been running a 426 street wedge I built using a 413 .070 block because the original block was cracked. It had a stock 63 Max cam, stock 915 heads a TM7 mani and a 4779 Holley with a stock Road Runner 11" convertor, it typically ran 12.50s with an occasional high 40 at 110-111. I had pulled the engine to upgrade it and still had to race every weekend in the brackets so I took an 80K mile 383 short block that came out of a friends car and put in the same cam, heads and carb with a Torker mani I borrowed. The first day out it ran 12.50s at 110 as it smoked down the track, it also had about a half of a point less compression than the 426, my friends were shocked, I wasn't, I still have all of the time slips dating back to 71.

Alan,

I ran that combo at a couple races in 2008. Went a 10.75 on the 11.25 A/S index. So that won't fly in your discussion. Wish I still had the car, LOTS of potential!!

Bret I still wish I would have got that car. You're right there was lots of potential there and could be fairly fast. If I had the money that'd be one I'd consider building still.

Bill we last ran ours in 2009 or 2010. So I'd guess that was probably the last time.

Yeah Rick, I wish you guys would have bought it, at least it would have stayed a stocker. I sold it to a guy in Ohio and he put an automatic in it and started bracket racing it.

Nice Bret !
1/2 second under.
Was that before the 3 tenths change in NHRA indexes ?

It was right before the change. I didn't have it geared right the tune was way conservative and the motor was a complete stock Ford unit with a set of experimental cams from Comp, this was before all the modular motor stuff had really come out yet for the NHRA cars. I should have built another one.

To help you with your build I would take your Wann powered cuda off your hands for 10 grand, rest assured, it would be well traveled and lusted after from Maramichi, to Napierville, to Toronto, maybe even ponoma, certainly epping and lebanon valley.

In all seriousness, Tom your car is as good as it gets, a Superbird although cool, will it even fit in a trailer?

Eric

I'd buy a new trailer lol! I have always wanted to build a superbird, just a bad Combo. If they would cut that thing some slack, I may be crazy enough to do it, I just happen to have a fresh jones 440-4 ready to roll. You have no idea the pimp tastic paint I could do on it. If the nhra wanted some flair in the show, I would do it! For now I'll stick with the cuda till the dart is finished..... Eric it will take a weeee bit more money than that for the cuda. I think you should send that gremlin down for some bling!
