Re: 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals
For those who want to know,
In 1968, Dick Arons was 'wheeling' a 1967 Camaro SS-396 'Convertible' in SS/F. The 'Butternut Yellow' - 1967 Camaro {396/325 HP} gave Dick added weight over the rear-wheels, and also put him SS/F, as opposed to SS/E with the Camaro SS-396 'Coupe'. Here in 1968, Dick Arons and Wally Booth are battling Dave Strickler in his 1968 Z-28 Camaro, also classed in SS/F. http://z28camaro.com/img/Tulsa%20_2.jpg |

Re: 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals
And as I recall the window sticker in the northeast area was $4400 list. (around $4200 dealer invoice) Even better there were several dealers around the country who needed the factory zone office to help unload one they had ordered and couldn't sell! Right before that time the factory was selling left over brand new complete 426 max wedge engines with transmission (choice of stick or automatic) for the closeout dealer net price of $1650.00
|
Re: 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals
OMG a max wedge and trans for $1650.
What would that be in today's currency? |
Re: 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals
Jim: $1750. in 1968 equates to $12,121.56 today
It's just harder to make and easier to spend now. |
Re: 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals
great stuff there once again Mr. Ceasrine. Do you know the breakdown on eliminations from that race?

Daryl,
1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals ~ General Overview ~ Friday ~ July 19 * Time Trials {For the Stockers and Super Stocks} * The Track was over-flowing with competitors. * Approximately {150 Super Stockers}. Nearly every top S/S Car from the Northeast was there, along with many of the 'big names' * And every Top Stocker in the Northeast was there, totaling approximately {120 Cars}. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday ~ July 20 * Class Run-Off's for Super Stock * Stock Eliminator {Stockers did 'not' have Class Run-Off's} * Time Trials > Competition Eliminator {Gasser's and Altered's} * Time Trials > {Funny Cars} * Time Trials > {Injected AWB's} ~ {Weights > 2400 lbs. ~ 2700 lbs. ~ 3000 lbs.} Stock Eliminator Championship * Winner > Carmine Rotunda ~ 1961 Corvette {Green} 283/270 HP 'Dual Quad' - {F/S} * Runner-Up > Wayne Jesel ~ 1956 Chevrolet 'Sedan Delivery' Wagon - 265/225 HP - {L/SA} Carmine Rotunda http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j3...daVetteetc.jpg ''Yoo Hoo Too' https://scontent-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hp...78407669_o.jpg Featured a 265/225 HP 'Dual Quad' in the 1956 Sedan Delivery. Since this vehicle was listed as a 'Truck', the NHRA permitted the use of the 4-Speed Hydra-Matic Transmission, which made these Chevy Delivery 'Stockers' near unbeatable. Engine prepared by; Tommy Kling {Truppi-Kling} Transmission by; Vitar {Vinnie Tarantola} Wayne Jesel and 'partner' Tony Massari campaigned the 'Yoo Hoo Too''. Tony was not as involved with the car in 1968, and Wayne was the 'primary' owner. The deal with 'Yoo Hoo' was very simple > Yoo-Hoo Chocolate Beverage Corp. {Carlstadt, New Jersey} gave them { $2500 } as a sponsorship fee. > Today's dollar value { $18,000 }. How did they get a 'sponsorship deal'. Very simple. Tony Massari's father was on the Board of Director's of 'Yoo Hoo''. The cost to put the 1956 Sedan Delivery together ..... $2200. Now that is a 'Junior Stocker'. |

Re: 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals
Daryl,
General Facts at the 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals S & K Speed Shop They did not compete in Super Stock Class Eliminations or Super Stock Eliminator. Their LO23 Dart was still undergoing some 'fine tuning'. Though they were there at New York National Speedway, they only ran 'Time Trials' with the SS/B Dart. If you look closely at those photos from July 1968 at New York National Speedway, you could see that the Dart was just painted. Also, the front windshield is 'shoe-polished' with 'Time', indicating Time Trial only. Sal M******, who was there filming many of the Races, stated that in his Film Stock, the S & K Speed Shop Dart ran; Time Trial 1 ........ 11.22 Time Trial 2 ........ 11.14 They were experiencing some 'shifting' or Clutch issues. http://www.dragracingimagery.com/photos/V1%2368.jpg |

Re: 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals
~ 1968 Super Stock Magazine Nationals ~
Sunday ~ July 21, 1968 Super Stock Eliminator Format Cars can run off the National Record. Or, they can run off their 'quickest' Elapsed Time during Class Run-Off's if it is 'under' the National Record. You cannot run off a 'higher' Elapsed Time than the National Record. Absolutely no 'sand-bagging'. No 'brake lights' can be seen before crossing the Finish Line, or you will be 'Disqualified'. '64' Super Stock Cars will be entered, and there will be '4' Brackets designated [A, B, C, D] > with '16' Cars per Bracket. You win, you advance, You lose, you are out. |

Thank You Daryl, I know you appreciate my 'digging'. From general 'digging'. Ed Miller > 'dialed-in' at { 10.75 }, off his lowest ET in the SS/B Class Run-Offs. Pete M***** 'dialed-in' at { 11.10 } which was the SS/BA NHRA National Record at the time {July 21, 1968}. Though, many of the 1968 SS/BA ~ 'A-Body' Race Hemi's could run under the Record. Dave Marinelli of 'Islip Speed Shop' told me that Ed Miller went by the 'Manhattan Speed Shop' Dart at 'mid-track', and then eased thru the Traps as to 'not' break-out. Dave said, that Pete M***** and his crew from North Manhattan were still working out 'some kinks' out of the SS/BA Dart in July 1968. He remembers the Dart running around { 11.25's } during Time Trials and SS/BA Class 'run-offs'. But later in the year, the Dart was down into the low 11.00's when they saw it run at Westhampton Drag Strip out on Eastern, Long Island against the Motion Performance A/MP Camaro. |
