ChiPs Dragracing episode
I was watching an old episode of ChiPs today and it was about drag racing. It started out with Doug Lambeck making a pass in a Volare' or Aspen tube chassis type car and it was filmed somewhere on the west coast. There was also a scene with an AMX that looked like a Super Stocker of that era and it blows the motor. There are several shots of what look to be stockers and SS's as well as some modified cars. Also a good shot of a Funny car and you can clearly see the name John Force on the sides.
It aired in 1981, anybody remember or maybe was involved in it? |

Re: ChiPs Dragracing episode
Bob,Thanks for the reply, after I though about it I realized I wrote Doug not Bob, I thought he might be a little young to be driving then. So that was a Pro Stocker, I'm not sure what they called it on the show. It looked like a handful to drive. Was that an 1/8 mile track?

Re: ChiPs Dragracing episode
Coincidently, I happen to have caught that too while channel surfing today. The Camaro that the AMX ran looked like a Stock or SS car as well. Mr. Lambeck's mostly blue Volare popped up again in the background of a later scene.
I keep hoping to see Officer Kathy Linihan (Tina Gayle) again in an episode. She was a cast member from 1982-1983, a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader (forgot the years) and a NHRA Miss Winston in 1980. I got my pic taken with her after winning Pro ET in Division 2 that year, but never got a copy of the photo! :( |

There were several Stock, Super Stock, and Modified cars at Terminal Island that weekend. The episode was shot on Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, 1980. The Camaro that raced the AMX was the '68 that belonged to Tony Janes, Warren Winchester, and myself (see attachment before we re-lettered the car). We bought the car in 1979 from the original builder who held a union card for stunt driving. He drove the car during the filming and he arranged for the car to be featured. I'm sure that Tony will read this and add more names to the list but I recall Jeff Wood's '57 Corvette, John Barkley's '60 Chevy V/SA as well as Bob's Pro Stocker plus others.
Terminal Island Drag Strip was created in a parking lot by Big Willie and the Brotherhood of Street Racers. It had good air, so-so bite, and the surface was anything but even. At that point we'd lost San Fernando, Lions, Irwindale and OCIR was on the way out. We didn't have a lot of choices when it came to tracks in the L.A. area. I continued to race that car until 2001 when it was sold to Jim DeFrank. I'm not sure where it is today. c |

Re: ChiPs Dragracing episode
For those of us older yet, do you remember the Adam 12 episode where they were drag racing?

Chuck is right on except for the purchase date, which was May of 1980. The attached picture is from Ontario World Final 1980. That was the only race where I won a round with the car.

Now that I had a chance to click on the previous posts and watch the old episode, I see that officer Reed ran an old Ford against the Camaro that had "problems" launching off the line. Oh,, what a script! Still,, it was entertaining.

Re: ChiPs Dragracing episode
Danny, the Adam 12 drag racing episode was titled "Who Won", and has been shown at least 3 times in 2014 on "MeTV" KVOS in Seattle. This channel shows many old TV shows, including Dragnet, Adam 12, Chips, Route 66, as well as some 50s shows like I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, the Donna Reed show etc. That "old Ford" that was featured on Adam 12 was Ted Wells 1954 Ford Modified Production car, powered by a 352 Ford and 4 speed, before he raced his SS/D 427 Fairlane. I keep my eye on the MeTV schedule guide for the Chips race episode, I remember seeing it many years ago, and remember Ponch pulling the chute on the Corvette while chasing some bad guys, and they were going too slow, and the chute just kinda fell onto the road.:p

Re: ChiPs Dragracing episode
The Adam 12 incident was shot at Lions Drag Strip in mid' 72, just before the track closed. Can you imagine racing a fast Camaro without a helmet today? There was an episode of the Munsters shot down thee a few years earlier called Hot Rod Herman or something like that. Seems that drag racing wasn't a four letter word then like it became later, although its cool again. Support your local track and race all you can before its a nostalgic memory like these places are.

Jeez Rory, I wouldn't want to get in a betting situation with you regarding drag racing trivia....

Re: ChiPs Dragracing episode
Larry Wilcox was involved in a Ford or Mercury land speed racing deal in the early 80's. They were promoting the CHV Escort style engine and he drove a EXP or LN7 and they also had a streamliner with the engine.
