Mike Hill here,im new to this Fourm, I currently own the Karl Gould Hemi Superbird , driven by Tim Richards , it was run as the SS/EA class in 1970.
Im looking for info about this car,, (old pics, documents , race data, etc,) Im planning to restore it to its "as Raced" look of 1970. Im also looking for the Original Hemi for this car vin number RM23R0A 161573 believed to be last owned by the late Bob Chipper. Engine was in the PA, area or Binghamton NY area. Im offering a $1000 finders fee to the person that can get me in touch with the current owner (*and actually buy the engine) Mike Hill Mjhill@ftc-i.net 803 236 8828 ANY help from you or your friends would be greatly appreciated. Re: Karl Gould Hemi Superbird 2014
I'm pretty sure the site below is run by a guy on moparts.com who owns the Ramo Stott Superbird and has a registry. He probably knows as much as anyone about the wing cars, so it might be worth contacting him. The site includes an email address and a phone number. Doug is his name, Aero426 on Moparts.

Karl Gould
I saw this Superbird run on July 4, 1970 @ Tri-Cities Dragway off of Route 17 in Endicott. New York. The last year that Track was in operation. http://i975.photobucket.com/albums/a...L_GOULD_01.jpg |

More Pennsylvania Racing
I wonder if this Superbird had the same heavy 'stainless steel' parcel tray that Jack Werst's Superbird had. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b4gtsKdv8i...t+Brothers.jpg |
Re: Karl Gould Hemi Superbird 2014
well, not exactly .... I know that Jack's car had a lead "layer" added to the rear sail /deck panel...BUT... it did have extra weight added... Bob Carpinet told me he had about 150 lbs of lead wool stuffed in the wing , along with the spare tire fill with a "substance"......
to read more about what ive learned on this car read this link on dodgecharger.com http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/in...,114248.0.html |

Re: Karl Gould Hemi Superbird 2014
Nice Photo's.
On the Jack Werst 'Superbird'. The 'extra weight' in the Wing was tossed out there, to throw the NHRA Techs off the 'scent'. In truth, the extra weight was in the; * Rear Window Deck Parcel Tray > {stainless steel} * Rear Deck Filler > {lead-filled} * Rear Glass Panel > {double-thickness} * 'C' Pillar's > {lead-filled} And still at near 'dead nuts' of the Shipping Weight { #3837 lbs.} |

Gymratt 30,
The name escapes me, but there was some connection to the components of this Superbird to another Hemi owner in Binghamton, New York. It was a long time ago........ |
Re: Karl Gould Hemi Superbird 2014
I got a email form a friend by the name of John Butchco, he may have enlightened me to a new path to search for my Hemi engine,,,,,
hi mike....well, I may have misled you a bit as far as the hemi engine is concerned....the mind ain't what she used to be so I spoke to my friend paul messemer today at length about thye engine(s)....it seems that the hemi engine out of the superbird ended up in another karl gould car...the one driven by tim Richards and paul back in 71 when these pics were taken....I did not realize that there was a second, third, fourth and fifth 426 hemi lurking around.....my understanding was that chip kept the original engine from the 33 willys for all the other builds....paul said NO, that there were a bunch of hemis lurking around at that time and the one from the superbird ended up in this car as pictured.....as I got out of drag racing in 1970-1, I cannot deny nor corroborate anything paul said....I suspect he may be right as he was adamant that the engine WAS in the brown cuda when it went to a guy in florida and then to another guy in Georgia - he mentioned that he told you this about a month ago...funny, but I just happened to have pics of that car in my old drag folder so here they are....if you have any connection with nhra/ihra/? in fl or ga, maybe you could look there....I was told the car was still sporting the same colors when last seen in, I think, Bristol tn at the drags there - it was running ss/da ....anyway, I am still checking with some of the guys from back in the day, but 30 years ago is tough for some of us to remember....enjoy the pics and I will keep checking - George did not have the engine as you may have thought.....later...johnnyB any of you guys know of a Cuda in Florida or Georiga running this paint scheme and sporting a Hemi? |

Yes,. It looks like this is the car I'm chasing. ...it was seen about 10 years ago at the drags in Tenn.
Some guy from Georgia, brought it there to run. Before that it's owner was from florida. I'm told it was wearing the same style red and white paint..... Any body know where this car is today? |

Hey :):):)...with all due respect...know Tim & Kim Richards for many, many years...they are as straight-up people as any on this planet...maybe this "story" which isn't exactly accurate...names (Bernstein brothers?)...Tim with a Sox & Martin engine???!!!***events/wins...with his (Tim's) talent/knowledge of the Chrysler Hemi (426) from day one...always possible...I guess...but pretty doubtful...I'd think...maybe a guy like me...not real talented in engine building area...for sure would have went the Sox & Martin "route" (if Tim wouldn't do it) if I was a Chrysler "guy"...sadly the late Bob Chipper another fine racer...real good guy...can't provide some info/insight...Tim & Kim are very private...so I can't help you with contact...but hopefully maybe they read this "story"...and are amused enough to clear up at least the beginning of Superbird (yours) facts...best wishes in completing car as you hope to...funny how time makes stories "grow"...we always won more-went faster-hung out with-way back when 'eh!!!:D:D:D Drake yikes...a lil' "surprised" Hemmings doesn't check/know a bit of backround-validity... on some of these cars...guess a "story"...is just that a "story"...Tim Richards accomplishments/success/contributions to the sport of drag racing over many years are numerous...he is in the dictionary...under Legend...a genuine... real one!!!...the Smith-Barney way...he earned it...wife Kim & her dad-Dick LaHaie right there with him...best- of...D...best-'nuff said !!!

Aside from the few mixups on the names ( Bernstein brothers) and the cars actual best time, ( which were correct on the display board, however got skewed in the writing of the story) the facts are pretty much straight from a phone conversation with Tim this past summer. "Sox and Martin Hemi and all" Tim Richards and Paul Messemer, have given me 95% of the information I have gathered so far on this car right down to who painted the car, its track history and what a pain in the Butt this car was too work on ..(with the long nose and Brake booster always in the way of the Valve cover..lol). Tim has been a joy to talk to and his knowledge is incredible. Heck he was even nice enough to sign the glove compartment door , over the Christmas holidays, ...*"best present I had under the tree..lol" |
Re: Karl Gould Hemi Superbird 2014
:):):) Hey...no better "source" or more candid/straight-up guy on the planet than Tim Richards...if he says it's "so"...you can indeed take it to the bank!...if as you say...this conversation took place this past summer...it's all good...only "question" would be having correct information directly from Tim...some time ago...why would you be "soliciting" further info about original origin (s) of this car?...let me be the first to tell you...I'm "old"...for sure not nearly as cerebral as days past...but...I'm clearly missing something as to "purpose" of this post from outset... or not previously acknowledging conversation (s) with Tim himself...again...truly...wishing you the best of luck in this endeavor...:) ...over....and out...for me...for sure...no further answer (s) needed...maybe-hope to see Tim & Kim this summer (2015) in Europe...visiting our mutual friend European Top Fuel racer/owner Rune Fjeld...if...he can put his fishing rod/reel down long enough in Florida!-Drake

Just for the record, the purpose of the thread was to see if anyone on here had any info of where the Original Factory engine went for this car, Also to see if any members had any OLD PICTURES of this car to add to my collection, Tim mentioned that he pulled the Original Factory engine out of the car and it was "put over in the corner", (hes not really sure where it went) Tim also mentioned that there was not a lot of pictures of this car out there... he gave me the name of a few of the Photographers that I could check with, But my hopes were maybe so of the members here had old pics from there personal albums that I might get a copy of. Lastly , this car was also run by Bob and Ed Carpinet, the paint scheme was changed and there may be some pictures of the car in that time of its glory days. gathering info on this car is had been fun... its a old piece of history. |
Re: Karl Gould Hemi Superbird 2014
"Just for the record" when old guys start rememberin' stuff about the old days, regardless of subject, the topic is going to drift from time to time.
That somehow tends to take us down a different path and something else is discovered or located or remembered. It's all good. Look at Daryl's original post for his LO23. That one post became the basis for this entire Nostalgia forum. http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/in...h=229407;image |

Re: Karl Gould Hemi Superbird 2014
I got a possible lead on my missing engine, and figured id post here to see if someone remembers seeing the car im looking for.
Paul Messemer mentioned to me that the original motor for my superbird could be in a RED and White 1970 Hemi Cuda . The story goes it was a drag car... if Left PA. back in the 70's and went to FL. from there it was sold to a guy in GA. Paul said, he last saw the car running at a IHRA race held in Tenn. back 10 plus years ago. anybody know of a red and white 70 cuda running IHRA in Tenn???? *1000.00 finders fee still offered to the person that can put me in touch with the current owner of the engine and * I actually buy the engine mike hill 803 236 8828 cell |

This Cuda is orange and white, but says it was originally built by Tim Richards.
Here is an add I found for the John Baughman/Kent Ritter/Bob Kaiser car, like the Sun Kissed Cuda earlier in this thread it has some great pics of the engine, interrior, trunk & underside of the car which are of great value to someone like myself who is trying to replicate such a car. "1970 SS/DA Hemi Cuda , this car started out as an original 440 six pack car with a 4 speed and red interior, and then was converted to a NHRA super stock car(with a hemi) very early in its life. It is currently ready for Chrysler Classic or Nostalgia events or run in NHRA/IHRA. With a little detuning it could also be put back on the street. The car gained national fame when Kent Ritter and John Baughman raced it with a six pack motor. The car is also a previous National Event(Grandnationals) and multi time SS/FA class winner(including Indy). Also many time SS/FA & SS/GA record holder(NHRA and IHRA). It even held both records simultaneously when John Baughman owned it. Car also won several points meets in NHRA Division 1 back in the day. The car has also been displayed in several Direct Connection parts catalogs too. I have National Dragsters&Magazines documenting all these accomplishments. It was originally built by Tim Richards(Bud King&Amato top fuelers crew chief) for Joe Umbra out of Wilkes Barre,PA. Then Bob Kaiser raced it before Kent Ritter. Currently the Cuda has a 60 over Hemi in it, with Barton Heads, Barton/Mike Bogina Modified intake, and Turner/BSJ modified carter carbs. The Cuda also has a Frank Lupo tranny and convertor. Best run at legal SS/DA weight is 10.06 at 133 at the last NHRA Division 5 race of the year. I also raced the car at the Hemi Reunion in Quaker City. The exterior of the car is painted in a old school style featuring pearl white paint with rainbow metalflake mixed in(looks great in the sunlight), orange metallic surrounding the white and purple highlights. The "Plymouth" logo on the hood and quarter panels are also old school silver leaf. There is a small dent in the passg rear qrter panel, but otherwise cars paint and body is excellent. The interior is black with some of the original red showing through on the dash. The seats will need to be recovered to be show ready. |
