New SFI flexplate for sbc. Not a $19.95 ebay special.....a name brand Made in the USA unit. Took it out of the box yesterday and saw these areas:

Re: Flexplate ?

I don't think that will be a problem. Looks like a pioneer.

Re: Flexplate ?

pioneer = chinese junk

Re: Flexplate ?

Not a Pioneer, though they do appear similar. It appears well made, with the exception of these areas.

Thanks! -Al

Re: Flexplate ?

so who is the manufacturer and if you feel it's well made, why ask?

It looks like any number of gold cadmium plated, poorly manufactured chinese flexplates to me.

If a racer has concerns about a product, it would be a service to the community to provide the product name so we can have a look into it before we go and buy one.

Re: Flexplate ?

This past winter it was time to buy a new flexplate since mine was out of date,, a TCI. I ordered a new one from Jegs (racer discount), same part # as before, and when it arrived, I noticed the TCI logo on the box was different,, same thing inside on the plate. No big deal I thought,, then upon further review,, I see its from Mexico,, no such markings on the old one. I was running out of time, so I'm using it, but I'd thought I would educate the masses. I guess I could've asked over the phone when ordering, but It never occured to me that I should've. My 2 cents.

Re: Flexplate ?

Most suppliers are probably buying the flex plates from the same manufacturer and rebranding them. I have a pioneer and it has worked flawlessly. No problem with fit or quality. When is the last time you saw a flex plate for an automatic come apart. I have never seen it happen.

Not ATI and seen it numerous times.

Re: Flexplate ?

Most of the issues seem to be in the ring gear for the starter. I had a TCI (years ago) rip 5 teeth of in my pit getting ready for a TT at a Memphis national event. Missed the TT.

Re: Flexplate ?

I've got first hand experience with what happens when a flex plate blows ('70 1/2 Z28). It's ain't pretty....I'm darn lucky to have all my toes and both feet.

The mfg. agreed this one shouldn't have gotten past their quality check. It's already on the way back to the supplier and a new one is on the way. -Al

Same here only 8 teeth. No real reason as the replacement Pioneer has been fine so far.

Re: Flexplate ?

Anyone remember Bonzi Starts? Put it in N, rev it up and punch L and pray. Saw a 442 Olds blow the trans at Milan in the '60s. Broke the drivers foot real good. Last time the owner allowed that.

Danny: TCI changed it's logo recently. Some sort of anniversary thing. I have a new TCI flex plate and I can't find any marking indicating made in Mexico on the plate or box. But then it's a Ford...

I may not need it, but I have a flex plate shield and a trans shield on a C4 behind a 302. I don't want to be that guy in the 442.

Yes, timing can be an issue, especially with the engine hot. I have my MSD set to retard the timing 8*. Good grounding for engine block is a must. I run a #2 cable from the block to to the battery.

Re: Flexplate ?

If you dont have crank retard on your ign system. The other thing you can try is. Get the engine cranking. Then turn the ign on. It seems to help some guys I know.

Re: Flexplate ?

I would be more concerned about the torque convertor bolt holes than a few small imperfections in the surface of the plate itself UNLESS they are numerous blemishes on both sides of the plate--- probably wise to send it back for a replacement !!! also check the area around the crank fange bolt holes thats where flexplates tend to crack the most

Re: Flexplate ?

years ago I had the ears pull out of the converter and pulled the bolts through the converter holes at the same time, shrapnel cut the master cylinder off the firewall-no brakes at top end, cut the accelerator pedal off mounting shaft and took the heel off my shoe......all at the top end......careful out there......not to mention destroyed the bell housing and the safety cable help it up. If it can happen it will happen.

For an update on this....the replacement unit is fine. :)

Thumbs up to Jegs for quick service. They also emailed me a FedEx shipping tag to return the original one. -Al

Good to hear. I had problems with a crank from Summit and they sent UPS to my door to pick it up. Both these operations have great customer service once the problem is properly explained.
