Ford Maverick combo
What would be a good combo to run a Stock or S/S Ford Maverick? What class would a MAV fit best in as far as engine options and weight? just curius

Re: Ford Maverick combo
2 bbl only is all available in Maverick or Comet 70 and up

Re: Ford Maverick combo
Best class for the car in my opinion is SS/GT. You can run IHRA or NHRA in that configuration. In IHRA, one of the Crate Motor Stock combinations might suit you. It's tight, but you can even get the 351W based combo in there.
If you like slow poison, try V/SA - I did!....:D |
Re: Ford Maverick combo
There are a few 302 cars lurking around Div 6 in Q and R...the 302 is factored at 162hp, kinda soft...

Re: Ford Maverick combo
I own a 71 comet gt 302 2bbl auto why is hp factor different from 72 cannot see the diff in the specs am i missing something?
|
Re: Ford Maverick combo
1972 was the year the factories changed the way hp was figured. on the up side 71 and 72 comet are the same visually.
|
Re: Ford Maverick combo
does this mean i could run the car as a 72 with the 71 block and heads or would i need a 72 engine ?
|
Re: Ford Maverick combo
Just check the engine specs on www.nhraracer.com. It will tell you what heads, carb, and intake, as well as piston and cam specs.
|
Re: Ford Maverick combo
thank you
|
Re: Ford Maverick combo
rule book states that you have to run the same year block or use an "approved' block. kinda depends on how close you follow the rules. :)

Re: Ford Maverick combo
Must be same year and make as car used, aftermarket NHRA- accepted cylinder blocks permitted. section 10a page 3 in the stock section.
|
Re: Ford Maverick combo
The 71 & 72 302's have the same block, heads, cam, and intake.
The numbers on the carbs are different. |
Re: Ford Maverick combo
thanks mike thats what i needed to know.

Note there is a comma separating the two thoughts. Aftermarket NHRA accepted cylinder blocks permitted. That means if a Dart, World Products, etc., block is what you want to use it is OK only if approved by NHRA. Use some common sense. Why would NHRA want a '71 (only) OEM block in your '71 Maverick? And then also allow an aftermarket non-OEM block? Some factory production blocks have no external markings on them indicating what year the block was manufactured. It doesn't make sense. |
Re: Ford Maverick combo
It is quite interesting how experienced racers can read the bible and walk away with completely different and opposing ideas of what was printed. Just shows how vague the rule book really is.
Shout out to PartsBob, see ya in Vegas next weekend ?? |

see you there buddy!

If NHRA wanted you to have a 1971 casting 302 block, and nothing else, it would be clearly stated. The engine blueprint guide, the class guide & the rule book are a threesome that are used together. You can't just use one of the three and hope to accomplish something. |

Now back to the thread at hand, yes Maverick's make great Stocker's, now throw a Kuntz built1968 3024V with a Jerico in that thing and go run some high 9's :D |
Re: Ford Maverick combo
Damn politics anyway :(
If I had an unlimited budget and couldnt keep my race car ADD in check, I would have a 302 Maverick on the trailer right now! Nevermind, I brought one home :) |
