stick shift piston to head clearance?
Is .040 ok or should i put a thicker head gasket on it. zero deck motor.

Re: stick shift piston to head clearance?
Type of engine? Piston to wall clearance? Class?

Re: stick shift piston to head clearance?
Piston weight ?
RPM ? Stroke length ? Steel or aluminum rod ? ! ! With 720 gram bare piston, I run .036" , to 7400... no issue. |
Re: stick shift piston to head clearance?
We ran .050 on a 68 Camaro Z/28 stocker back in the early 80s. Those were the stock piston rule days. We wouldnt have if we could have cut the valve reliefs

Re: stick shift piston to head clearance?
Plenty with steel rods, no matter the rpm.

Re: stick shift piston to head clearance?
I don't have all the specs,but it's a 540 mopar with 4.500 bore and 4.250 stroke and uses a 7.100 steel oliver i-beam that i spin to almost 8000 rpm.

Re: stick shift piston to head clearance?
Since this is obviously not a Stocker engine, why not cut deeper eyebrows for piece of mind?

40 is fine. For piston to head, that is.

Re: stick shift piston to head clearance?
Sorry, I misread it too. We ran .035, I wouldnt run less then .030 but some do

Re: stick shift piston to head clearance?
Are you talking deck height or piston to valve clearance? With a 4 speed, you need at least .080" intake and .100+ piston to valve on the exhausts. As far as deck height on that big of a motor, .045 total would be a real close call. Stuff stretches disproportionally at RPM, more so on a big inch long stroke motor. In fact, stuff you can get away with on a 283 won't work on a 350 without collision of parts. On small block stocker engines, we've run .028 total deck(block height and head gasket thickness combined), with .040 intake and .050 exhaust P to V with an automatic trans. I know, that's enough to make anybody nervous, it should. That's sometimes what it takes.
