Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
THANK YOU - I have a 65 Satellite 426-S - 4 sp - 3:91 posi - AM/FM with reverberator (remember those) - dark blue poly with blue interior.
Bought it in 1988 (I was 18) and was going to use it as a drag car until I found out what it was - Had the buildsheet decoded and it is now all apart for a complete resto back to original I always wondered how many were made. |

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
In 1970,
One of my father's employees at his Gas Station / Service Center had a 65' Satellite (Dark Blue Poly) 426-S w/Automatic, with factory installed 4.10 gears. He bought the car for $300 with about 50,000 miles on it. It was a very quick car. Raced it in 1970.....completely stock,,,,,,,13.85's @ 101 MPH |
Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
Anyone have a pic of a convertable hemi race car? Don't remember seeing a 65?
|
Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
Tommy D,
Mopar did not produce a 65' Race Hemi in a convertible. The 426-S (Street Wedge) was available in the Satellite (convertible) or the Belvedere II (convertible). |
Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
I do remember they were a bit heavier than the 64' Belvedere and Coronet Models.
Both the 1965 Plymouth Satellite and Dodge Coronet 500 with the 426/365 HP 'Street Wedge' were around #3570 lbs. {Shipping Weight}. They came in with a Weight Factor of 9.79 Wt/Hp. This one looks like a '65 or '66 Fury station wagon...440 powered.

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
The overall production numbers for the 1965 426-S 'Street Wedge'.
Plymouth = 4469 Belvedere, Belvedere II and Satellite Dodge = 2100 Coronet, Coronet Deluxe, Coronet 440 and Coronet 500 These cars were not abundant, and by 1969, very few were running at the Drag Strips. For NHRA Stock Class, they had a hard time; only 10.3-1 compression ratio, small exhaust port heads, mild hydraulic camshaft, mid-range pressure valve springs, poor-flowing intake manifold, and under-sized 575 CFM Carter AFB carburetor. No match for the 1967 thru 1969 'Super Commando' 440/375 HP Mopars. |

Hamilton Motors out of Michigan,,,,,,,,
Said they had the 'trick' to get the 426-S 'Street-Wedge' to run.. |

I have a friend who, as a senior in high school (5 or 6 years ahead of me) bought a brand new 1964 Plymouth Stage 3 Ramcharger (aluminum front end car) and towed his senior class float in the homecoming parade. He raced the car (in stock or SS) for a few years (named "007 Thunderball") until he bought a new 68 Charger street hemi. I'm a GM guy but I really liked that car. The 64 Plymouth and Leal's 65 Hemi car are two of the few early Mopar's I really liked. My second choice would be a 68 Roadrunner. |
Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
1965 Mopars production numbers for the 426-S 'Street-Wedge'
Total units,,,,,,,,,,,,,,6569 I wonder how many 426-S engines found their way into a Plymouth Belvedere I or II 'Station Wagon'.... The numbers say,,,,,,,,,,not one 1965 Dodge Coronet 'Station Wagon' received the 426-S engine plant. |
Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
Paul, I wouldn't doubt it if some old man ordered one of those 426 street wedges in some of those models offered...and never say never with Chrysler production figures.

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
Moose,,,,,,,,,
Correct,,,,,,,,,had to be somebody out there, or a 'performance Plymouth dealership' back in 1965 who had a 'vision'. The 426-S,,,,,,,,,,,,365 HP Street-Wedge in a 3650 lb. wagon,,,,, A nice 10.00 Wt/Hp factor, maybe not the greatest for 1965,,,,,,but in 1968 with the new NHRA weight breaks,,,,,,,,,,,that fits nicely into E/SA. |
Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
This '65 Coronet convertible looks like it might have had a 426 street wedge engine in it...I also see a Dodge dealer logo on the doors.

Charlie, that's not Herb McCandles '65 A990 in the background, it is Robert Nance in his '65 A990 Mr Plymouth...but the cars do look similar though.

Paul, here's a '65 Coronet in SS/EA...those headers are almost touching the front tires.

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
Great photo's,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,:)
Sources tell me that there was a 1965 Plymouth Belvedere II (9 Passenger) Station Wagon out of San Bernadino, California,,,,called 'Cucamunga' It was an original 383/330 HP (Automatic). In 1965, it was classed in C/SA (10.60 - 11.29 Wt/Hp). But in 1966, they campaigned another 65' Station Wagon, but the new car was a Belvedere II (6 Passenger) Station Wagon, and this car had an 'original' 426-S 'Street-Wedge' in it. It was lettered 'Cucamunga II' In 1966, it was classed in C/SA (9.50 - 10.59 Wt/Hp). And ran, 13.20's. Both cars disappeared after 1967. |

Nice night photo from 1967.
1965 Dodge Coronet 426/365 HP 'Street-Wedge' A good combination for SS/EA in 1967. http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/b...CK_DODGE-1.jpg |
Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
The production numbers I have on the 426-S cars do not give a breakdown for Wagons, but there were a pretty good amount of 4-door Dodges and Plymouth built with the engine.
I have a '65 Coronet 440 that was an original 426-S/automatic car. It was sold new at Bob Banning Dodge too. |
Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
I don't know what motor this '65 Coronet started out life with...but it's been a race car most of it's life.

Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
This should be a 1969 photo,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
1969 NHRA Weight factor,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,9.50 - 9.99 Wt/Hp The1965 426-S cars also ran in in E/S or E/SA in 1969. |
Re: 1965 Plymouth Satellite '426-S Street Wedge'
Hey Paul, it seems that more racers chose the '65 Dodge Coronet over the '65 Plymouth Satellite judging by the amount of old photos that I'm finding of both models.
