Ford Racing is hard at work getting the new 2013 Mustang Cobra Jet race cars inserted into the first production month at Flat Rock, MI. With the 2013 Mustangs due to show up on dealer lots soon, Ford wants the Cobra Jet on the strips this spring around the country.

The run of 50 Cobra Jet production began this week. Brand new bodies were shipped just down the road to Watson Engineering in Taylor, MI to have some in-depth modifications done. There the body structures are lightened by removing several non-structural sections of sheet metal.
In the photos you can see the rear package trays, under hood structure, inner fender and cowl sections and under rook skin gussets chopped out to save weight. The addition of the multi-point roll cage not only makes up for the removed structures, but adds critical safety to what will become a bullet on wheels.

The roll cage is made of 4130 Chrome-Moly tubing and is 8.5 second ET legal for the NHRA. Once work is done at Watson, the bodies will be shipped back to the line at Flat Rock to be completed. There, the supercharged Ford Racing Cobra Jet engines will be installed along with all the electronics, fuel, braking and suspension systems alongside the rest of the 2013 Mustangs. We will bring you reports as the build progresses.

Straight line running or turning corners, it's been a long time since the factory cars were this out in the open and available, even in limited numbers, to the public.

Ford also build runs of 50 road race Boss 302S race cars and they might be using the same roll cage.

Ford Racing had their engineers look at ways to work in the design of the Boss 302R and Boss 302S road race roll cage in to the 2013 Cobra Jet cage design.

Where are the COPO camaro build photos?

obama hasn't released them yet, he has a few more countries to opologise to first.

Was that a dirty jab?.....naw obama motors deserves it. Wonder if he'll appoint a "racing czar"? Then he can pick winners and losers in racing too...and GE can build the cars in China....

Awesome photo's though! The 60's are back! The factories building racecars and you don't have to wait for a monthly magazine to see them 3 months later!

The 2012 CJ- N/A- 5.0 is factored at 325 hp with a shipping wt. of 3320 for the coupe. (9.90)

I would think the 2013 CJ with the N/A 5.0 would be the same ????

No 2013 CJ classification on NHRA's site as of the moment.

WOW !
Several days ago that dealer had the same car on e-bay and the top bid of 79,000 did not meet reserve.
Now it's re-listed and 145 K !

I see NMCA (?) has a new 5.0 Coyote class for all 1954 and newer Ford vehicles. They will use sealed from Ford engines.
I have this outrageously fun '03 Focus SVT. There's a bolt in V-8 kit made by somebody and it will even accommodate the Ford modular engines. Now a 420+ HP Coyote in a Focus could be a lot of fun...hmmmm

I don't think there is any way that is a real bid. There are several others listed with no bids. One even with a no reserve auction opening bid of $99K so $99K would buy the car. Who would be stupid enough to bid $46K more for the same thing? Nice try mr. car dealer

^^ agreed.
It does look bogus because if it were real, there would be 2 fools involved.
The one who bid $ 144,900 and the the current high bidder @ $ 145 K.

2013 Cobra Jet bodies are currently on the paint line at AAI, in Flat Rock, Michigan. Cars are mixed in between the Mustang and Mazda 6 in the paint line. Enjoy the photos.

Hey Jeff here's the link to the NMRA's Coyote Stock class. Sorry but no FWD conversions, I too was looking at a 97 Ford Probe and then read no FWD conversions. Also specifically for guy's like you and I, no Long Style or Adjustable type clutches. Diaphragm only !!! It still looks like it could be a mid to low 10 second class eventually

Great shots...maybe ask your 'friends' to snap a couple of close up photos of that paperwork hanging off the car...it might be valuable information when any discussions are started about what it says on it in the future.

I thought this thread might like to see one of our development engine dyno pulls. This is the 5.0L naturally aspirated engine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGxps...2&feature=plcp

We went over 100hours of dyno time between development and durability on this engine. Then roughly another eighty 1/4 mile runs for each engine combination before we sign off on the finished product.

For added reading if you are interested Evan Smith wrote a nice piece on Cobra Jet track testing in the February 24th, 2012 National Dragstern and 5.0 magazine did a spread on the Cobra Jet engine in new July 2012 issue.

Very interesting to see some of the paint process. Including dead time for things like drying, masking, touch up, etc.; how long does it take from initial wash until the top coat is dry? I'm guessing 2 hours??

OK, I'm a MoPar guy (no, really?) BUT you gotta give it to Ford for getting so deep into the racing thing. I just wish all manufacturers would be more honest with the HP figures. This aspect kinda turns me off. Love the new cars but they advertise a 3250 lb. car that runs in the eights and rated at 325 hp? OK, I was born at night but not last night.

Thanks for the info and pictures! Very interesting for sure. Jim

Yes you can purchase the BIW competition kit. You have to have your order in by June 1st and be approved by FRPP to purchase one. Only Racers are eligible. http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...KeyField=22711

Call an FRPP dealers to get the best price. I ordered mine from Mike@Diversified products(BuyFordRacing).

Pick up is scheduled for mid August. On front page http://www.classracer.com/Mustang%20...s%20Retail.pdf.

Thanks for the links, I was just doing a price comparison on the Mustang BIW compared to the Challenger BIW...they are both good looking cars.
