New York National Speedway in Center Moriches, NY. I started racing there when it opened in 1966. Back then we had 3 tracks on Long Island, NYNS, Westhampton and Islip. With the booked-in Wednesday night shows at NYNS, you could race 4 times a week! Sadly all but a memory now!

Re: Lost Drag Strips
When did the Rhode Island track close? I raced at Connecticut Dragway from the mid 70's until they shut down and only heard talk about the Rhode Island facility. Incidentally, Connecticut Dragway was still being used as a dragstrip and test site for USAC to test new vehicles to report 0-60 and quarter mile times as well as stopping distances, etc. It might still be in one piece, it sure was an easy place to get to, but the bite was lousy. It was a good place to test and tune, if your car ran well there, it would run even better anywhere else!

Re: Lost Drag Strips
Assumption, IL ---- Motion Raceway. It was supposed to reopen a couple of years ago in a 1/8 mile / grudge race type format a few years ago but it never did. It's about 30 miles from where I grew up, I drove out there a couple of years ago. The track is still there but it would take a lot of effort to resurrect.

Re: Lost Drag Strips
Well since I just went to a reunion of the "last drag race" (1972) at the NHRA museum this weekend
How about Lions Drag Strip down near Harbor City here in So Cal - or as it was better know as "The Beach" Very fast and well run by "CJ Pappy Harty" after Mickey Thompson left in the early 60s Those were the glory days for the little guys since the big guys were just getting started The Moongose, Snake, TV Tommy, Bagshaw, Larry Sutton, Linda Vaughn were all there as well as too many others to numerous to mention :-) peace |
