roller rockers
It seems like a lot of racers don't want roller rockers (myself included). Write NHRA, tell them and while you're at it, suggest a max valve spring pressure (say, 300-350lbs open) . No more rocker arm issues, lifter problems, pushrod flexing, more square lobes (no advantage without additional pressure) , rpm range kept "reasonable", etc. It has worked before (mufflers). Ron.

Re: roller rockers
Ron, You are partly correct. Not all racers wanted roller rockers. The ones that really wanted them are the ones who chose to race a combination that has a poor valve train set up. They kept bending the ear of select officials until......well you see what we now have.
Unlike roller rockers, the muffler issue never became a rule. Once a rule is printed, manufacturers fill their bins and racers spend cash on parts, it is hard to get a ruling reversed. Speaking of roller rockers in Stock now being allowed...why would anyone think that any ratio other than stock would be allowed? Be ready to have the ratio checked in a teardown. |
Re: roller rockers
It is my understanding stock racers will not be forced to use roller rockers. I.H.R.A has allowed Roller Rockers for years before N.H.R.A. This issue is simple to resolve. If you do not like the new rule, just use what you have been using, it is just that simple.
I for one will use the roller rockers. Not because of a performance davantage, i will use them because of a reliability factor and for no other reason. |
Re: roller rockers
Roller rockers will only cause more breakage and oil downs, ( then will come a diaper rule). I am not in favor of the rule change, wish the money hungry bunch in Glendora would leave well enough alone.
How about a rule that would help the life of this sport? Something that would allow the next generation to enjoy drag racing. Something that would keep the neighbors happy and make the tree huggers smile. Put mufflers on your car and save a drag strip, maybe that would have saved my local track. |

So many tracks are getting shut down by the noise complainers. It's 100 times easier to shut a track down than to open one up. I run mufflers on all my cars, regardless of how much power they make. There's actually mufflers out there now that will help make more power with certain combos. |

The new factory race cars are a totally different situation, which, ironically, are even further from "Stock" than any IHRA Crate Motor combo! |

NHRA has an accepted rod list where aftermarket rods must meet specifications on the then-current NHRA Stock and Super Stock Replacement Rod Acceptance List. IHRA says you can run "Super Stock connecting rods in Stock Eliminator." They really don't provide any specifications to go by for rods or pistons. |

NHRA will not require mufflers. Noise issues are with a track not NHRA. I realize that many "class" racers hate mufflers, I personally love them and I race at Fontana every time the gate opens in brackets or a NHRA race. It is the only track we have in the LA area. If thats what it takes then wear a pair of mufflers...........................or take up some other sport because this one will be history around here. |

Ask Bakersfield and Sacramento why they dont hold a NHRA race anymore, and now they just add as many non NHRA events to there list they can and they will survive while we suffer with no races we can enjoy with friends and class type cars anymore. |
Re: roller rockers
how did a question about roller rockers turn into a bitchfest about mufflers?

Re: roller rockers
Which company will be the first to offer contingency for the use of there roller rocker? T & D is the only one listed in the Lucas Oil series for rocker arms.

Any clarification from PRI. on this issue?

Re: roller rockers
Just got back from there. No there has not been a final rule on what is excepted. None of the manufactures knew what the final rule was ALL of them was waiting on Danny Gracia's ruling on the rockers. I think we will know something the next week or so. They did not even have a rule book there. Also the booth was real small and no was was attending it.
Robert P.S. wait for the COPO!! Testing will happen this week... |
Re: roller rockers
The print is out but the rulebook is still very broad on the rocker arms.

What is the final rule on rocker arms, anybody know???

Re: roller rockers
It appears to me, the rockers have to be the same configuration as stock ie; a Mopar small (early) and big block must still run the same shaft configuration, but the needle bearing roller tip rockers are allowed, must be same ratio as blueprint specs. I don't think NHRA intent is to allow machining the top of the head for T & D, Jessel, or such. I think the intent is a stud mount must still be a stud mount, a shaft must remain a stock shaft location. Some people will be affected in that the specs might call for a 1.5, and of course there are usually no numbers on the stamped steel or ductile iron(Mopar), and almost all of the aftermarket has the ratio on them. Might affect camshaft etc, and is very easy to look at by Tech Inspectors. That is what got me pitched earlier. Cam checked, but the specs say 1.6 and I had 1.65 and I went home. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Who's rockers will pay ?
When IHRA did this Harland Sharp came on to pay.... |
Re: roller rockers
Why obsolete? You don't have to run the things. Whatever you had is still ok. And some 1.6 unstamped rockers might be better than 1.5 alm stamped, or change the cam.

Re: roller rockers
We're currently working with Harland Sharp with the Gen III Hemi roller rockers. With the new NHRA approved 1.65 RR and our NHRA approved rocker ties, should make a for good combo, course Harland Sharp will have to submit the package to NHRA for approval.
|
Re: roller rockers
NHRA has not issued any rule clarification, as of today. I would not suggest to anyone that they buy anything until NHRA produces a clearly written rule. One thing every racer should learn about NHRA rules: Get it in writing from Glendora if you want to be sure it is legal.
