69 Ford Torino Cobra
My Neighbor has a 69 Torino Cobra 428 Fastback. Nice Driver quality with
non matching 428 but fresh Ford Power Parts engine. He has owned it 20 plus years. It is a strong runner! I am a Mopar Boy and wondered if these are rare or collectible? I could probable buy it for 12K. Thanks for any Help! |

Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
GTX John,
Though the 1969 Torino Cobra cars are a good bargain, money would be better spent on a 1970 Super Cobra-Jet 429. Mr. X I agree, the 69' Hardtop Coupe looked stronger,,,,,,,,,,'body-wise' http://www.motorbase.com/pictures/co...rino-cobra.jpg In 1969, both the Hardtop Coupe (#3541 lbs.) and Fastback SportsRoof (#3599 lbs.) 428 Cobra-Jet 335 HP (non Ram-Air 428's) cars were classed in F/S or SS/J. (10.00 - 10. 49 wt/hp). The 69' Fastback 'SportRoof' car was notorious for a 'whippy' tail-end. http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Ford-TORINO-4...6TfiQ~~_35.JPG General Performance; Road Test; 428/335 HP Cobra-Jet (non Ram-Air), 4-Speed, with 3.50 Gears and Traction-Lock 15.07 @ 94 MPH Motor Trend; 428/335 HP Cobra-Jet (non Ram-Air), 4-Speed, with 3.50 Gears and Traction-Lock 14.90 @ 95 MPH Motor Trend; 428/335 HP Cobra-Jet (with Ram-Air), 4-Speed, with 3.50 Gears and Traction-Lock 14.50 @ 100 MPH Motor Trend; 428/335 HP Cobra-Jet (with Ram Air), C-6 Automatic, with 4.10 Gears and Traction-Lock 13.88 @ 101 MPH Car & Driver; 428/335 HP Cobra-Jet (with Ram-Air), C-6 Automatic, with 3.91 Gears and Traction-Lock 14.27 @ 99 MPH Note; Car underwent a performance tune-up before the dragstrip test. |
Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
John,
My thoughts are, what would you give for a 69 Chevelle SS 396 car without the original motor? How about a 69 442, GTO? Why is the Ford any different? Aren’t they all muscle cars from the same time and era? Didn’t they all reign supreme in some category somewhere? If the body is good, the mechanical is good, and the interior is good, shouldn’t that alone count for a piece of automotive history? As you can see I own a Cyclone. I faced this same dilemma years ago regarding the value of my car. I love the car. I did not want to sell it or make some restoration that I was scared to touch. I decided to race it. I am still trying. I don’t claim to know all the answers, but I am puzzled by some of the thinking regarding our type of cars. I also know from reading about you, that you would give the car a very good home and take care of it. I wish you the best. |
Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
I personally like the hardtops also. :D

Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
For looks,
The 69' Hardtop Coupe (non Ram-Air), a flat hood without the scoop. Color; Red, with the black accent grille,,,,,,, 428/335 HP 'Super Cobra-Jet' ('Q'-Code) The 428 SCJ 'Q'-Code * cast pistons * nodular cast-iron crankshaft * externally balanced * 427 (Lemans) cap-screw connecting rods * engine oil cooler * Holley 735 CFM Carburetor 9" Rear 3.91 Gears, w/Traction-Lock limited slip A very 'sharp-looking' street sleeper, that could run 14.20's @ 100 MPH. pc |
Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
I believe it should still be a 735 CFM carb.

Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
I like the hard top but LOVE the fastback.

Hardtop Coupe versus Fastback 'SportsRoof',,,,,,,
For the dragstrip,,,,,and man-about-town,,,,,,,the Hardtop Coupe... Definitely a Northern USA car. For the roundy-round,,,,,long-haul parkway driving,,,,,the Fastback 'Sportsroof'. Definitely a Southern USA car. pc |
Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
1969 Ford Torino Cobra
In June 1969, Speed Age Magazine (formerly Drag Strip), got their hands on a 1 of 1, 1969 FordTorino Cobra. The Car; 69 Torino Cobra 'Hardtop Coupe; Color; Red Interior; Black Engine 428/335 HP 'Super Cobra-Jet' (non Ram-Air) 'Q' Code Factory Options; * Bucket Seats * GT Handling Package (Extra High-Rate Front & Rear Springs) (Extra Heavy-Duty Front & Rear Shocks) (Large-Diameter Front Sway-bar) * 6000 RPM Tachometer * Drag-Pak (Engine Oil-Cooler & 428 Super Cobra-Jet Engine) * 4.30 Gears w/Traction-Lock Differential * Heavy-Duty Battery (80-Amp) * Heavy-Duty Alternator (55-Amp) * Extra-Capacity Radiator * Close-Ratio 4-Speed Transmission (2.32 / 1.69 / 1.29 / 1.00) * Delete Options ( Radio, Heater, Body Sound Deadener) Dealer Installed; Factory Provided Components (Traction Drag-Pack II); * 15" x 7" Chrome Style Wheels, w/Chrome Trim Rings * F60 x 15" GoodYear R-W-L Tires (Front) * G60 x 15" GoodYear R-W-L Tires (Rear) * Traction-Master Traction-Bars * Extra-Thick Rear Shock Tower Plates Dealer Installed; Factory Provided Components (Drive-Train Drag-Pack III); * Hurst Competition/Plus Shifter * Schieffer Clutch Package (High-Rate Pressure-Plate and Heavy-Duty Clutch-Disc) Dealer Installed; Factory Provided Components (Free-Flow Exhaust Drag-Pack IV); * Special Low-Restriction Exhaust Pipes (2.75" diameter) * Special Un-Baffled Mufflers * Special Cast-iron Exhaust Manifolds (Exhaust port passages and header openings ground smooth) Dealer Installed; Factory Provided Components (Hi-Rev Engine Drag-Pack V); * Rev Limiter (5800 RPM) * High-Pressure Fuel Pump * Blueprinted Cylinder Heads (Lightweight Valves) (3-Angle Competition Valve Job) (Milled Surface and CC'd combustion chambers) (Intake and Exhaust Ports gasket-matched) (Performance Valve Springs) (Spring Height set) (Teflon Seals) * Adjustable Rocker-Arms * Edelbrock Aluminum Dual-Plane Off-Set Intake Manifold (#FE-427) * Intake Heat-Crossover Passage Block-Plate * Holley 780 CFM Carburetor (Vacuum Secondaries) * Dual-Point Distributor (427) * Solid-Core Ignition Wires Performance Results; (Post your guess) Note: A 'factory showroom' 69' Torino Cobra, with a 428 Super Cobra-Jet (Q-Code), 4-Speed close-ratio transmission, and Drag-Pak (4.30 gears), with stock F70 x 14 tires, could run; 13.85's @ 102 MPH. |
Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
With that rev limited set at 5800 I can't see it even making it through the traps with 4.30 gears G60 tires.
But I'll guess 13.30 hitting the limited from 1100 foot on. I had one for many years. Black "R" code SCJ coupe with every option imaginable. 1969 FoMoCo Chicago Auto Show special build. I bought it from the original owner who lost his licsence. Very fast street racer that made me a lot of money. Sold it to Tony's Godfather during my divorce and he still has it as far as I know. I'll post some pics. |

Alex and 69 Cobra,,,,
Excellent analysis,,,,,,,,,,,,, Speed Age got the car to run a best of 13.18 @ 109.5 MPH Average times were in the 13.20's @ 108 MPH. The Rev-Limiter was put in for a 'reason', obviously...as the test was controlled and observed by a 'neurotic and extremely nervous' Ford Dealer representative. The Speed Age Magazine car-testers came to the conclussion; * removal of the Rev-Limiter, * install 7" 'M & H' slicks on 15" x 6" rims * thinner front tires 7.35 x 15" * tweak the Holley 780 CFM carburetor Estimated Performance; 12.80's @ 112 MPH. |

Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
My late friend Gene Collins raced a "Box Top" 69 non ram air (flat hood) 428 CJ Fairlane when new after he sold his 271 HP 66 Mustang. He ran in the 10.5 lb class which was H/SA at that time (F/SA today) against the 62 Dodge 383/343 HP wagons. With the 4.30 gears that came in it and everything else as Ford built it he ran 13.30's on OEM street tires. With headers and 7 inch tires he was in the high12.90 and 13.0 range. After we did the heads it ran 12.60's. We then put a 3000 stall 10 inch converter in along with a shift kit in the C-6 and a regrind stocker cam then ran under the record with 12.40's using the OEM stock short block The record at that time was 12.65 set by the "Behemouth" 62 Dodge wagon of Pratt and Burkett. He won enough to pay his bills when he was laid of at work racing at Capitol and Aquasco raceway back then. It was a great car.

Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
Kris is correct. In 1969 the Cobra was its own model, it was neither a Torino or Fairlane
It was also the base car used for the Talladega. To tell the difference just read the 3rd & 4th letter of the vin EX: 9A42Rxxxxxx Fairlane Fastback 35 Torino GT fastback 42 Cobra Fastback 46 Formal roof Fairlane 30 Fairlane 500 33 Torino GT 44 Cobra 45 These cars are starting to get more valuable everyday Regards, Marty Burke 1969 Talladega {Maroon} 1969 Talladega {white} 1969 Torino GT {R code 4 speed} 1969 Torino GT {Q code auto} 1969 Cobra R code 1969 Cyclone R code 1969 Cyclone Spoiler II {Gurney} 1969 Cyclone Spoiler {Cale} All still in the garage |
Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
Wow nice collection Mr. Burke. I would also like to add the 69 Cobra hardtop or formal roof was a 45 code for the 3rd and 4th numbers.

Re: 69 Ford Torino Cobra
Hi Kris,
As I'm sure you saw I did post the Cobra coupe. Thanks for the compliment on the collection,. Those are just the one pertinent to this topic {yes I have more cars}. FYI, I ran a 1969 Cobra Stocker in D/SA a few years ago {won class in Houston with it in 2003} but went back to my Mustang. Thanks again, Marty |

I don't believe a whole hell of a lot from any magazine..but car&driver and Road&track have got to be the worst excuses of magazines besides....motortrend.
Pro import, ALWAYS slower in dragracing than any other magazine test of any car. In other words, they suck. I'm suprised they didn't call it a Cobra, torino jet, 390SS, GT! |
