hemi race carbs
anyone have a fix for constantly changing float settings in the holley 4236 and 4235 hemi cross ram carbs --it seems as though they will not hold a setting--tried different floats , seats etc.stumped--Mike

Re: hemi race carbs
Just a thought but I'm thinking too much fuel pressure or faulty needle and seats.

Re: hemi race carbs
I've had the same problem, It's not fuel pressure related.

Re: hemi race carbs
got a return fuel system at 6 #----I wonder if the angles where the float touches the needle are not quite right---you set the floats, make a pass, and then there is fuel everyplace---almost like the floats are getting heavy---somebody must have the fix for this---Mike

Re: hemi race carbs
How are you setting the floats? With the sight plug in the side? I don't know too many racers that do that. Take the bowls off, turn them upside down, and use a drill bit for a gauge between the top of the bowl and top of the float. Most use either a 3/8" or 7/16" bit for a gauge. I think if you do that, then recheck them later you will find the float level is not changing, but that you have other problems.
What do you mean "fuel everywhere"? Fuel sloshing out the vents? That is not a float level changing problem. Try a 7/16" dril bit first. If the carbs are set front-to-rear, not cross ways, you will probably want to use a 3/8" on the rear bowls. |
Re: hemi race carbs
These carbs are not center pivot float bowls (the 3/8 drill is fine for center pivot bowls) the Hemi float bowls are the side pivot bowls ( just like the old 660's or the Ford Holleys for the 427's) for side pivots start with a 5/16ths drill.

Re: hemi race carbs
carbs are side hung 770 on hemi cross ram---they flood----set up is fuel(c 16) just dribbling out the sight holes with the engine running---seems like we have to constantly reset the floats--I see now why guys do not like to run these carbs---Mike

Re: hemi race carbs
Me too folks. These carbs have been driving me crazy for years. Been thru the ringer, warped carb bodies, floats that fill with gas (even on a brand new carb), the mysterious port behind the bowl on the early reissues that need to be plugged, etc. Hard on plugs, and intakes from the backfires. But when they work , wow!!
