250 inline six

Hey fellas I'm building a '49 Chevy sled in my free time and will be running a late 60's 250. Plans are to fuel inject it and turbo it.

Any one run this engine for S/SS? Factory head is horrible so I thought I'd see if anyone had any experience getting them to flow better.

Thanks

Troy

Can't help on the head. But take a look at the Vi-Pec ECU it has some great boost control options.

There used to be a company I think that made heads or re- did heads for chevy 6's and I believe it was Clifford but i may be wrong.

That's who it was. Clifford Research. Hope he's still alive. :-)

Re: 250 inline six

When you add pressurized air the head is no where near as important as naturally aspirated. Getting a cam profile that builds boost might be more of a challenge.

Actually, the heads are too big. way too much dead air. i don't know how to contact him but there was/is a guy out there that does comp stuff, Lump is the only name I remember that modifies those heads.

Re: 250 inline six

SPATurbo out of Brazil loves these motors and acually makes a manifold for them. I just picked one up used on ebay. Clifford still makes parts for them too. They make a nice intake that will take a carb or can be machined for injectors.

I'll probably just give the head a bolt in lump kit to give it some short side radius and clean it up a bit by hand and call it good.

Thanks for the info so far!

Brian Self from OK. Comp racer. His dad Glen Self raced an H/MP Camaro inliner in the 70s and had great success.

Troy, you should know who Brian is.

Kevin Self is Glens son. Currently runs comp. 580-924-5866

Brian (Lump) Self is Glenn's nephew, and Kevin's cousin.
I believe he now lives in the Houston area.

Glen Tredwell from Fla runs inline motors in comp also.

Troy,
Check www.inliners.org.
There is a book on chevrolet sixes written by somebody whose name starts with S.
I'll look aroung and see if I can find it but I think it is loaned out.

Re: 250 inline six

Troy,

There are probably a lot of people who have put in time on those heads but I doubt that many have devoted as much of their life to them as Mike Kirby, a partner of Kay Sissell back in the day <http://www.sissellautomotive.com>. Mike has the molds that he and Kay designed and casts up a pallet or two of castings every year. Watching him machine a raw aluminum casting into a race head is a fascinating way to spend some time.

A couple of years ago, one of Mike's customers wanted a fuel injected 250 so he fabbed a manifold, we hooked up a Holley Commander 950 FI system and he and I spent a couple of days on his dyno sorting out fuel and timing maps. That was a very responsive little motor.

In addition to the aluminum heads Mike has a comprehensive product line of bolt-on components for those motors. He runs Kay's old twin-six dragster on the nostalgia circuit with some success. Last time I talked to him he was experimenting with running nitro in the dragster.

It would be worth your time to call him (number is on his website) and talk about what he has to offer. Mike is a great conversationalist as well as a died-in-the-wool six-banger gearhead.

Good luck,

c

I know someone who I believe still has one of those Kay Sissell heads.Let me know if you're interested and I'll find out.

Re: 250 inline six

After running both the 230 & the 250.....unless your putting it in a truck or have a light aftermarket crank the 230 is the way to go.....230 uses 283 pistons & crank is about 18 lbs lighter!

Correct. Brain fade.

Re: 250 inline six

You guys are a wealth of information, thank you.

I never see any 230's but 250's seem to run rampet. They'll take 307 pistons but I'll proabably have to have some made anyway to handle the boost.

Ed I would be interested in that head, they are usually very expensive and hard to find though.

The Chevrolet Six Cylinder Power Manual by Leo Santucci is the ones you want. Volume two is a little more into turbos and super chargers. I'm building an injected-turbo 292 for bracket racing as we speak. Injecting a siamised port engine can get interesting unless you use a throttle body. Mine is port injected. Some claim close to 1000 hp out of these things. I'm not going that far. Looking for half that.
