ADRL Bigfoot pic from dragrace central
Did anyone else see the picture of Bigfoot from an ADRL race that was posted on the dragracecentral.com site? Is this just another step toward making drag racing only a "show"? I know that Feld/IHRA is doing that, and although I have never been to one of their events, I thought that the ADRL been to one of probably has some of the best side by side drag racing going right now. Do they too have to resort to bringing in Bigfoot to entertain the crowd?
I personally don't feel that a monster truck belongs on a dragstrip unless is it sand, dirt, or mud. I saw one of the original Bigfoots in 1979 (when it was still a Ford truck!) at the dirt drags in Fairmont, WV. I don't care to see and certainly don't want to pay to see a tube chassis monster truck on an asphalt dragstrip! |

Yeah but kids do....and with targeted marketing, kids can persuade their dad to take them to see Bigfoot anytime, anywhere. |

Just looked at the pic...isn't even Ford Blue...what kind of heresy is that?
As for marketing to kids, this is just part of the whole transformation thing we're seeing, including the new iron. |

Its for downtime, which at a Pro Drag Race their is alot of. I think it was Royce at MIR that had a stunt motorcycle team that would do tricks during downtime of events. In Grudge Racing we use to say "Get in where you fit in" well guys its changing and you better figure out where you fit in.

Re: ADRL Bigfoot pic from dragrace central
Growing up around Great Lakes Dragaway in WI, "Broadway" Bob used to pack the house by supplementing the drag racing action with things like monster trucks, jet cars, jet cars tied up to school buses by a chain and roasting them, wet t-shirt contests, etc etc. It was a lot of fun to go with my dad and it's what got me into drag racing as a kid! I think the idea of bring a monster truck out to the drag races will be cool to watch and can only bring more people into the events.

Now as for grudge racing, we owned a track, and we never had an issue with grudge racers and needing Armed Guards. I can also say we were the first to do a Grudge Fest and make these guys into hero's and yes we made 7x more money in a 5 hour event on a 43 degree Saturday in March than we did on a 2 day IHRA Pro Am. Now you see why its hard for a track operator not to put on a thrill show, and combine shows to make it better. Herb jr |

Re: ADRL Bigfoot pic from dragrace central
Terry back in the late 60's the guy who worked the hardest won. My dad had a work ethic like no one else. All he wanted to do was win and did it everywhere he went. He won over 60% of his races in 1968 and that is what got Buddy Martins attention. Now it's all about money and it will never go back to what it was.
Also one thing that helped my dad was the fact he was from Memphis Tn. Now that might not seem like much but Memphis was a HUGE hub for racers back then. You had Racing Head Service, Comp Cams, Cam Dynamics, Joe Lunati, Bill Taylor, TCI, Raymond Godman all based out of the Memphis area. The competition was tough and the technology that came out of that city is amazing. Raymond Godman actually had the Safety Safari at a race before the first NHRA nataional back in the 50's. This is when people made things happen. Herb Jr |

This is when people made things happen. Very true....I watched him thrash on the Dart on many weekends. The spectators just filled the stands on any given weekend at a local track....1/8th or 1/4 mile. Today there are many who will not even race on an 1/8th mile track. I didnt get to know your dad until the early 70's when Pro Stock took off. He always had a smile and had time for the fans. He really enjoyed life and what he was doing. I think the biggest problem is the ture car guy/culture is gone. No one cares to watch stock or S/S anymore as its become watered down so much. The race fan today would rather see nitro cars, nitrous junk, or circus acts. The sporsman racing has changed so much since you ran your Convert. GT car and won the IHRA championship. I bet you didnt know I rememered that and the hassels over the Q-Jet carb that most said never came on your engine combo....LOL. Gezzzz that was a long time ago ! |
Re: ADRL Bigfoot pic from dragrace central
I only ran that q jet carb one race at Kinston in 94 I think. It wasnt as consistant as my slow Thermoquad but was faster. And besides it was only a few racers complaining, and it made my day knowing a racer had nothing better to do than to complain to you about my carb. I do remember that day very well as you came over to talk to me with a grin saying "why do you do stuff like this".
