Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Jeremy;
I'm sorry that we couldn't get a alternator for them last night. I could tell that they really were hoping to be home last night instead of spending the night in Ocala. By that time of night on a Sunday every possible place had closed up. Please post and let us know that they arrived home safe. Thanks. Hey Dan Moore, you're #1. :D RIP Mark Graham |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Yes, they arrived home safe and we are very thankful to everything that you have done to help them.. If every you are in need please dont hesitate to ask..
Thanks again Jeremy Waibel Triple J Motorsports & Machine |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
I wish he would have stayed broke down! Especaily after the srewing he gave a lot of us Stock/Super Stock racers over the years back in the 70s and 80s that had work done by him and his cousin Terry.
I had several shortblocks done by him that did not last 75 runs. I personally know of two other racers that Waibel did their heads illegally and when they beat him in elminations he would protest the win saying " I know the car is illegal as I did the heads". I was present when Waibel said this at the inspection area at Bradenton,Florida. I have satisfaction that he WILLGO TO HELL ! Dave Bunch Racing and Restoration Services |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Jeremy;
I am so glad to know that they arrived home safe. Again, I'm sorry that we couldn't get them back on the road Sunday night, but after he told me the route that he would take home I must say it was probably best that the truck quit where it did near Ocala. Taking a chance on going down Hwy. 471 with that uncertainty at night would not have been the best idea. In the end it all worked out for the best, and that's what is important. In the time I have been involved in racing the most valuable thing I have gained is the loyal friendship of the different racers I have met. A few years ago I was talking with Tom "The Old Man" Ward and we agreed that the friends we have both gained through racing are the ones you can count on anytime you find yourself in a bind. This might be stretching it a little, but I believe one could count on my low-life scum bag friend Dan Moore even. Hey Dan Moore, you're #1. :D RIP Mark Graham |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
That is pretty bad to kick a man when he is down.
I don't know you or Jim. But I do know several people in Louisiana that had Waibel engines in the 70s and they were all record holders checked by Red Anderson or Wesley. With that being said why would you have several short blocks built by him. I would have had two. The first one and the last one. Greg |

Mr. Bunch, I am Jim Waibel's son Jeremy. With that being said, I 'm not going to be on either side. Not only was I a kid at this time there is obviously nothing I can say to change your opinion of my dad. As far as bringing my Uncle Terry into this, I dont feel that is appropriate. Just wanted to let you know in case you were not informed that we lost Terry almost 3 years ago now. Opinions are one thing, however; when you say that he "will go to hell"; this I do have an issue with. My Bible says no man can enter the kingdom of heaven except throungh the Lord Jesus Christ. My dad knows he is right with God as was Terry at the time of his death. I am sorry about your experience with him and to be upset is your right. When I posted this I was not thinking about racing for one second , I was asking the family of racing to help my 70 year old mom and dad and their "little" doggie that were stranded on the side of the road. Thank you to the "rescue rangers" and hope to see you at the races. Jeremy Waibel NHRA B/SA K&N 69 camaro STK2231 |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
I don't have the time to waste on this scum bag on this forum. He is not worth it! I have been silent for a long time and I guess I just got tired of the "great Waibel". I had John Troxel talk me in to doing my short block after 3 short blocks by Waibel with number 7 rod out the side of the block. Troxel said "send Waibel's short block to me along with another short block and I will build you one at cost". I did send Waibel's and other short block sent to me by Olds Engineering rep. Dale Smith (yes I was part of the factory race team) on two seperate shipping pallets via truck. Within two weeks Troxel calls me and said " number 7 rod and piston were unbalanced in relatioinship to the weights of the rest of the rotating assembly". In others words purpouslly done to keep me coming back. I got a lot more facts that this guy is not what he seems.
Just ask Ron Kenziour. BTW: at a points meet at Warner Robins, GA a guy he screwed over big time stepped in front of Waibel's car to keep him from racing in the 1st round of SS and Waibel ran over the guy and broke his leg! Nice huh, what a great guy! I am done |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Nicely said Jeremy. This does not need to escalate. Dave, Jeremy's father's sins are not his. While I can sympathize with you, Maybe you should have straightened things out years ago with Jim. Just my 2 cents. Jim

Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
I am not here to decifere what may have or may not have happened back in the 70's. I do however feel sorry for you that you have carried this around for so many years. It must be agonizing to live this way.
Understand this... while you may have had bad experiences with my dad, there were MANY MANY MANY others who did not. There were MANY MANY MANY national record holders that ran under the Waibel Competition W. I also know that you do not recieve honors such as "Engine Builder of the Year" or Division 2 Hall of Fame Inductee by either being a fraud and/or not what you are made out to be. I dont think that NHRA seeks out very many people to place information into thier rule books on how valve jobs should be done, however they did with my dad. So I ask you, do you feel that they would do this to someone that by your definition was OUT TO GET YOU!!! My other question to you is the same as other in this forum, if you had a problem with the work that was done in your motor, WHY GO BACK? You know there is an old saying "1st dog bites me, SHAME ON DOG, the next time the dog bites me, SHAME ON ME" I just know that if it were me, and I had the kinds of issues that you are describing, I would have went down the road long before what you are saying. It is not as though you did not know other engine builders. I do wish that you would have cleared the air with my dad years ago... As far as Troxel is concerned, I know that there was a working relationship between him and my father, however to what extent I do not know. With all of this being said , I would still stop and help ANY racing family that was stranded on the side of the road.... Again, as I said before I am sorry that you had a bad experience with my dad, and I hope that you can eventually put it past you and move on. After all, in the grand scheme of things what good does it do for you to hold on to the bitterness? Please understand that even though I try not to take sides in things like this that do not directly involve me, it is very difficult not to have a biased opinion in the matter because no matter how you look at it, he is still my dad, right or wrong in his actions in the past. I am not my Dad, and I hold no hard feelings towards anyone in reguard to this issue or any issues they may have had with him. I want to be my own person in the racing world, and you really have NO IDEA how hard that actually is!! Jeremy Waibel |

Dave,
"Gone Banana's" Dave Bunch, right? 1. Every time I've broken a rod it's been number 7 and Jimmy Waibel never built any of my engines. 2. In 1976 I rode all the way to Indy and back with Waibel and he didn't run over or protest anyone. 3. Hope I never did anything to piss you off. Had some good times racing against you and Jimmy Waibel back then. |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Jeremy:
I understand it is not about you. I am a mature 66 yrs old man with a lot of real life experiences, a single parent who raised two young daughters, a two tour Viet Nam combat veteran, and I could not attend all the races I could have due to job and family commitments, I also know "blood is thicker than water". Enough said on that! Jim Wahl: I respect you on what you have done for the Southern Stock/Super Stock Association. I do not carry any weight on my shoulders about this. You sir have no Idea the hardship this person put me in. I lost a vital points race at an IHRA national event, a Wally at a NHRA National event, and the chance to be the Div 2 stock points champion prior to Indy! I was a hard working single parent with two young daughters to provide for and because I was very successfull locally and nationally I made enough money racing to more than cover expenses and provide extras for my girls, this guy cost me prestige and $$$. Besides who likes being taken advantage of. I thought this guy was OK to deal with when I moved to Florida after quiting Olds. Gezzzzzs he was part of the team, the team I belonged too! Who knew! OK, this is the last I will comment, because it will go no where but negative! THAT is why I never said anything before. I regress, I guess my switch got flipped. LOL |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Carl my man, how the hell are you dude? Great to hear you still kicking. Miss coming to Orlando Speed World. I am retired and traveling in the motorhome 7 months out of the year. Just did a $100,000 dollar restoration on a rare 70' F-85 2 dr.post coupe W-31, 4 speed, Ralley Red paint, one of 5 painted this color and only one known to exist. It was just featured in Hemmings Muscle Machines, Jan. 2011 issue.
Ya, ya great racing back in the 70 s/ 80 s. You had a bitching, hauling *** SS/D Camero. You really did a " class act " of running the track after Herdon gave up the reins! No problem Carl, never had an issue, miss you and glad you are still among us |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Dave,
Thank you for your compliment. I know who you are and remember racing with you back in the day. I am a little younger than you though. I to raised two kids on my own and raced as I could. You are correct about one thing, I haven't walked in your shoes or had your experiences BUT....... I have had my own experiences and disasters, maybe not the same as yours but equally as disheartening. I just thought you came off a tad harsh that's all. Once again, just my opinion. Jim |
Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Jeremy, I went see my machinist today an ask if he knew who Dave Bunch was, an the first word's out of his mouth, is that whiner still racing stock. Jeremy the machine shop were i get my machine work done here in Muncie,In. is owned by Bill Smith of Bill Smith Racing Engine's who worked for your father back in the mid 70's at the age of 19. He said he remember Dave calling an bitching that they put all his pistons on backward and again over the milling of the Exhaust side of his heads. He also said, how much Did Dave bitch about all the Race's he won using Waibel motor's. because all he did was win about every race with his Waibel motor? Lastly Jeremy, I was told the next time you talk to your dad tell him Billy said Hi! JohnK 3954

Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Well, was not going to say anymore, however this last post by rowdyboys31 is greatly inaccurate. I am about the truth and totally resent the lies stated in this response!
Facts are: 1) RHS (who was my sponser) supplied the heads and they are the only ones who did all the work. Waibel never/ever had any heads from me nor did he work on any of my heads. This would have been in voilation with my racing contract with RHS . 2) Waibel only did the machine work on the short block and did the assembly. 3) I supplied all the parts, I. E. pistons, rods, crank, brgs, and crank. 4) The pistons/rod assemblies where supplied to me by Dale Smith in engineering that where specially machined with the "V notch" machined on the opposite side of the piston, thus changing " pin inclination" so I could run them backwards, thus increasing piston speed, resulting in more horsepower, and "during teardown, they would pass tech". 5) I never "whined". I was always talked to Waibel and no one else. I believed in Waibel as a team member even during the year and 1/2 when everyone who knew I had Waibel's decal on my car, hearing all of the horror stories of how they got screwed, I stuck with Waibel, not believing them. 6) Besides the report from Troxel on what was done to a short block done by Waibel, which Waibel did not know about, prior to this time during the Gator Nats I went down to Lakeland, FL on Sat. night to race as they had a $250 to win Stock/Super Stock combo race, which I won (BTW: I had just recently installed Troxel's short block). On the way back to Gainesville I had a really bad towing accident that destroyed my tow vehicle and my race car came off the trailer. Since I was only just a few miles from Lakeland, I did not know who to call, so I called Waibel as I knew he had a tow truck. Well long story short I called him to come pick the race car up and his exact words were " no problem it should be about $100 dollars". I said "Ok". I called a few weeks later that I was coming to pick it up. He said " It will now be $250 dollars". Now this was 1976 and that was a lot of money. I said "why so much"? He said " I have been thinking, I did your short blocks to cheap and my dog is tied up to your trailer, if you do not pay me, I will put a mechanics lien against it and it will be mine after 30 days". I asked him to give me a few weeks to raise the $$ and "would you please air the rear tires up in a few days, as I run them tubeless and they are brand new, to not to ruin the sidewalls". Can you say black mail! I came to pick it up and pay the "ransom" and you guessed it, the tires were flat and the sidewalls were cracked, ruining the tires. Call me stupid, the panic I was in from the pressure from the Fla. Hwy. Patrol to remove my race car as they said "now", the seriousness of the accident, etc, etc. I will admit, what was I thinking! The facts are still the truth and the truth is the facts! Of course those who think they know what transpired will believe what they think happened. The important thing is " I know what the truth is". BTW: The best I ever went with a Waibel short block was on the record or one tenth under and the fact that I was good and I could cut a "an excellent light" had a lot to do with winning a lot of races. After installing a Troxel short block, after the third "break-in pass", I went 4 tenths under the record, short shifting at 6,200 rpm instead of 7,000 rpm! hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Eventually after getting use to this "new power" I went 8 tenths under! I wonder why? |

Re: Attention Jim Waibel Broken Down in North Florida
Ok Dave,
Ok, at this point, I have had enough. As you said in your post "call me stupid" ok, STUPID. I'm not sure if you have fell and hit your head or drank to much "re" with your "tard" this morrning, but lets look at a few things of which have been said: 1. If you are such a great driver why were you trying to CHEAT by using backwards pistons? Altered Pistons that are not stock configuration that will still pass tech.. not sure but sounds like cheating to me... just saying... 2. As for your RHS sponsorship. They like a fool placed an Ad in National Dragster against Dad. This called him out saying he was not able to build a chevy to beat the olds. That was not the case since the next time National Dragster wrote it said "Zap goes the record that old Waibel sure is able". Dad also has many more records and wins and recognitions. To name a few: 1968 Division 2 champ 1969-1970 Smothers Brothers racing 1971-1974 Oldsmobile racing 1972 NHRA Engine builder of the year. 1972 Car Craft allstars 2003 NHRA Division 2 Hall of fame 2006 Old Drag racer reuion hall of fame Many of these awards had to be voted on by other racers and engine builders. If he screwed so many people he would not of recieved the votes. So if out of all the great things my father has accoplished from just being Dad to working in our local community to racing you feel like you recieved a raw deal than I guess you should of filed a complaint then. The complaint department of today has a real big case of D.G.S. I do ask that your opinions stay to yourself and not in the air as I will not allow for this behavior against my family. A great man I know once said: ".... this is what happens when you give a high performance motor to a low performance person." Thank You Jeremy Waibel |

Jeremy, just remember that with every successful person, there probably is a small minded jealous little failure that is a detractor. It has been said that you can always evaluate a person and his character by who his enemies are. About the engine failures, its true that some persons could break a bowling ball with a rubber hammer in a sand box if you gave them half a chance. Chin up, don't let one person get to you.

The whole point of this thread is Mr. and Mrs. Waibel were broken down and need some help. Sadly, the thread got hijacked into these old allegations and bad feelings from 30+ years ago that had nothing to do with the subject at hand. To answer your question, yes Mr. and Mrs. Waibel arrived home safely. Last Sunday evening after seeing Jeremy's message on here I made contact with Jim, then contacted my friend Richard Rivers who told me he had a alternator that he thought would work. We met up with the Waibels where they were stopped at I-75 and Hwy. 326 just north of Ocala. We discovered that the alternator Richard had would not work, so we made phone calls to several parts stores hoping to find one that might be open. Being that it was around 8:30 P.M. on a Sunday we had no luck. There were no motels at this exit from I-75, so we got them to a motel at the next exit south so they could spend the night. I was at my local NAPA parts store at 7 A.M. when they opened Monday morning, got the alternator that they needed, Richard picked them up from the motel and we got the aternator installed and got them on their way. This was a combined effort from myself, Richard Rivers who some of you may know from seeing him helping Brien Radley at alot of the races, and Gainesville Raceway's RFC Chaplan Phil Greene. It was a honor to help someone legendary like Mr. Waibel, but fact is he was a fellow racer in need and I was glad I was able to help. Hey Dan Moore, you're #1. :D RIP Mark Graham |

The Waibel family greatly appreciates all the help that was extended to our family. There have been many times that we have stopped to help other drivers that have been in trouble on the side of the road. I also personally know the feeling of being stuck on the side of the road.
Yes, he will be on the christmas card list for a very very long time. Again, thanks so much to everyone for all of your help and kind words!!!
