open race car hauling trailer builders?

Racers,

I am in the market for an open car hauler trailer. The lower the better with long ramps. Maybe a removable left fender so the door will open. Also enough tongue length for a small tool/storage box. A 16 foot bed length is what I have in mind with maybe a 4 foot tongue length.

Let me hear about companies who build such a trailer.

Thanks

If you are planning on a custom open trailer, you may want to consider the following:

* At least 3,500lb axles. 5,000lb wouldn't be a bad idea.
* Open middle deck so you can work on the car from under the trailer. But that may compromise how low you can go.
* I had one built to accept a 2'x2'x6' construction site tool box. May need some trimming to the "feet". But most fuel jugs fit, they have a very durable epoxy coating, weather proof and are very secure. Lots of storage. Maybe a 4' would be enough, but a 6' helps protect the car from rocks kicked up by the tow truck.
* Slight down angle at the rear to help loading and reduce ramp length.
* Get a heavier duty version than you think you need. Better in the long run.

I have a 18 ft open (full steel deck) with 4 ft dove tail mfg
by Quality Trailer Inc in Ohio. It has 3500 lb twin axels and
7000 gross. and electric brakes on all 4 wheels.

Besides using it for hauling cars I also use mine to haul
freight so the full deck comes in handy.

In 2007 it cost the original owner about $4K to purchase,
I bought it in the beginning of 2008 at a great savings.

If buying a trailer get the 5000lb axles it get's you 12x2 brakes and larger wheel bearings on the 3500 lb you only get 10x2 brales and the outer wheel bearings are the same as a Ford Maverick or Pinto.

Appalachian trailers makes a nice, very inexpensive trailer. The paint is poorly done. But you could probably request a higher quality job. 330-222-2468.

A bit further away from you but Eliminator Trailers by the Unger & Wilhelm Co. in Syracuse, NY has been building decent open race car trailers for years. They were very popular with Northeast-area races and with many racer-friendly options. I'd give them a try!

Take a look at the Texas Rollback trailers. Not the cheapest open trailer, but I saw one demonstrated at a Good Guys show about 8 years ago... No ramps to mess with, no hydraulic ram, the tow vehicle does all the work. I've not seen an open trailer design that I like better.

U&W trailers has been closed for a few years now.
I still have an 04 18ft. Eliminator that's never had a car on it! 300 miles from Syracuse to pick it up!
It's NOT "On sale" It's "For Sale"

I just picked up a Kaufman Trailer at the factory in North Carolina. It's 21 feet (19 feet with a 2 foot dovetail) diamond-plate, with 2 - 5000 lb. axles, electric brakes, and break-away kit. You can also get it painted a custom color instead of plain old black.

Very solid and well built trailer.

I had a home built trailer. I will say that having the center open help me out of some jams. I could install an exhaust, change a driveshaft, drop and oil pan, and many other things right on the trailer.

I fixed my wife's car right on the side of the road by pulling the car up on the trailer and climbing under..

It depends upon your budget. Steel with open and heavy axles will provide the best bang for the buck. I opted for a 20' featherllite with 4800lb axles and the inch brakes @ 1910 pounds for my drag pak. Its a very nice trailer and with weight distribution bars towed great up and down the mountains of Tennesee....thanks mapquest....cumberland pass is nice though

Eric

Unfortunately, Classic Trailer in Sturgis, Mich. closed up last year and has been bought out by a company just outside of Cincinnati. Hopefully they will do as good a job as the original company.

I purchased a Bri-Mar open trailer from Hillwood Sales about 2 years ago, 18 ft full deck, power coated, removeable fenders, 3500 pound axles.

Great trailer, towed really well, and Hillwood Slaes was great to deal with.

I recently sold it and got a really good return on my investment, the trailer still looked new because of the powder coat.

I have two open trailers and as always, they are for sale:

2008 Featherlite 20ft deck, 4800 lb axles, 6 lug rims, ALL Aluminum (just like the one Eric described earlier!)

1995 Steel deck 18ft, built very low, w/ a large box on the front (which is beveled to cut down on wind resistance), new S4500 superwinch, built in AL and in very nice condition, tows awesome!

Just call or e-mail if you'd like pics, info. or my opinion on other trailers...
