Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
I just checked tires-easy.com and they have the Maxxis #8008 which is an 8 ply tire for $108 each. The kick in the ***** is about $84 shipping. The Marathons are $94 each with $58 shipping. But they're only 6 ply rating. The difference in shipping is the Marathons come from Del. warehouse.I didn't look up where thr Maxxis's come from.Google them and chack any website that shows them.Let your fingers do the walking.
BTW both tires are 205X75X15. 225X75X15 might be an option for you. |
Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
Pete, I would use a conventional truck tire 225/15 C rated or 235/15 C before those trailer special things. Those TS things are usually D rated, but that means more ply and more heat and faster blowout. Any tires are good close to home. On the road for a few hundred miles in the summer is where the trouble usual comes in.

ED
I'm looking to get the 225x75x15 Load Range E. Do i need 8 or 10 ply do you think ???? Thx for helping.. |
Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
If someone is making a 10 ply 15 inch that is not a trailer special, it might be worth looking at. If it is some brand you never heard of, I would be careful. If you notice, all the trailer special tires look alike, sorta slim, slim tread. Lot's of private labeling on tires, might be marathon in disguise. Or worse.
|
Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
No tires are actually 8 or 10 plys.....They are 8 or 10 ply "rated"....just another piece of misleading information..... the actual number of plys is something less. Go by the letter designation as that designates the weight the tire can carry. If you really want an eye opener...check the wheels weight rating......Many wheels are rated at quite a bit lower weight carrying limits than the tires.....
Buy the E rated 225 tires......they are rated for higher loads and take higher air pressure. I bought GoodYear Marathons from Tire Rack and I think shipping was free......one or two days and they were about $110 a tire about 2 years ago....they are only D rated tires...65lbs air.....E rated tires take 80lbs but GoodYear does not make an E rated 15 trailer tire....E's carry a heavier load.... The only E rated 225x15's in a trailer tire I know of are Maxxis and Titan.....there might be others but I have not seen them available..... We have bought many tires from 2 local dealers for our service vans.....they did not have any trailer tire deals or lines worth buying. I bought the Towmasters from them.......looked like the same as Carlisles.......junk.... |
Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
Denman makes an E rated trailer tire, which could be inflated to 80 psi, although I did have a set and had problems with them. That is why I recommended going with a 16 in. tire.

Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
Rich
Maxxis does have a E rated tire, so that's probably what i'm looking to buy. Thx for the help. Pete |
Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
Someone posted about taking heat gun readings on a trip. What temp range is of concern when taking the readings?Just facts, not speculation.Thanks.
|
Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
I also use a temp gun to regulate my brake adjustment. It only takes a minuite, when you stop to fuel up. you can shoot the tire and the hub quickly as you walk buy while fueling. This will identify any potential problem that will put you on the side of the road, and potentially cost a lot of $$$$. I will get under and adjust and/or investigate a reading in excess of 20% (hotter or colder) of the other wheels (6 in my case). Most of the time I'll be within 10% on my normal adjustment maintaince program. Also very important and potentially costly, check the bearings lube and replace as needed. I have the E-Z lube axles but don't use that feature, because of the chance of pushing the grease past the seal and into the brake shoe area. You know what happens next. I try to take the stuff apart once a year and replace as needed and hand pack the bearings.

Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
My Classic trailer has Nev-r-lube axle bearings.......I never heard of them before I bought the trailer. They are sealed bearing cartridges. Nothing to pack or adjust. I replaced all 4 when I did brakes. One set of shoes had NO brake lining material on either shoe....none! Was having issues stopping and after a little inspection I saw why. I replaced the bearing cartridges just so I would feel better.......One snap ring and they press in and out of the drums hub. All your supposed to do is inspect them for any obvious grease leaks and check the play by rocking the wheel with it off the ground......They are good so far and I kept the old ones for spares......they were also good...
High end travel trailers, like airstreams, have been using these bearings. |

Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
Something that I do with my Semi Truck and trailer tires is instead of regular compressed air I use nitrogen. The nitrogen molecules are 3 times larger then regular air so you will not get a low tire when trailer is sitting for extended periods of time. And they run cooler also. I was pulling a triple axle cattle trailer and I had to replace the tires on two of the axles and I used the nitrogen the other had regular air, and when I fuel up I always feel my tires, the tires with the nitrogen were noticably cooler then the other ones.

Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
What about the 16 inch wheels in place of the 15 inchers. Where can you buy these?
I had a 28 foot pace and had 15 flats in 3 seasons. I tow a lot and tend to drive fast too. Traded for a 50 ft pace LQ with 16 inchers. 1 flat in 2 seasons. Bought a 48 ft haulmark (POS) trailer. 4 flats in 2 seasons 3 on the same hub. It has 15 inchers on it. I was'nt paying attention when I bought it or I would not have. Chip |
Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
Please remember that any tire presure over 60lbs when inflating a tire can kill you when the tire explode, one of the reasons that professional tire installer use a cage to protect themselves when inflating tires. I own a BlueBird Wanderlodge which tips the scale at just under 36.000lbs all tires are inflated by my local Goodyear tire company, usually when the tire technician inflates my tires he locks the air nozzle and walk away from the tire his inflating(I also follow his lead) Joe, follow Mr Teuton's advise, he know's a thing or two about mileage. I attented a Goodyear seminar for people driving an Rv with trailer or a truck and we were told to stop every two hours to let the tire cool down, gives the tire rubber and oil to cool down. I followed that rule and never had a flat in six year hauling an open wheel trailer with car and before that probably four blow out each year.Claude

Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
Just received the September 2010 issue of 4-Wheel & Off Road (pages 34-35) and they are testing BF Goodrich Commercial T/A traction tires with load range E on a trailer. Has anyone tried these tires?
I am going to wait until next spring and then purchase trailer tires for possibly all five trailers. I want the best choice. I appreciate any and all advice. Phil |
Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
16" tires and wheels should be available from anyone selling trailer tires and wheels. Be sure to get a trailer wheel, they are laterally stronger to take the side loads when turning.
Our company sells them but I don't want to advertise on here with phone or email. Private Message me and I might be able to help. Jok |
Re: Trailer Tires Part 2
Chip,
Easternmarine sells a variety of trailer parts including all sizes of trailer wheels and tires. I have purchased parts from them in the past and they have been reliable and their prices are competitive. Worth a shot. Hope this helps. Ronnie, Jr. |
