Roll bar painting question?
I would like to paint my roll cage myself. What products would you recommend for painting? I have heard that Eastwood makes a nice paint. I have also heard that Rust-o-lium applied with a spong brush works well. I will have one week to paint my cage and install my interior when I get it back, so the paint needs to cure within 3 days.
Thank you for the advise, Larry |
Re: Roll bar painting question?
Larry,
I just masked off the glass on my Duster and used Rustoleum gloss black spray cans to do my roll bar. I like the idea of the foam brushes if you have the time for that. |

Did you use primer? |
Re: Roll bar painting question?
Larry, we have found the Rustoleum and the foam brush to be the best way with the least mess, usually two coats will do a very nice job. The paints flows nice and dries in about a day. I think spraying turns out a little nicer but takes alot of taping and masking to do a nice clean job

I also used Rustoleum, but didn't thin it and the foam brush drug the paint around alot. Sort of like streaks. A painter that I know said that I should have thinned it out a little and it would not have done that.
It turned out very nice after a second coat. No primer. I cleaned it with Acryliclean wax/grease remover. |
Re: Roll bar painting question?
You may want to consider Rustoleum Hammerite it brushes on and develops its own texture. No brush marks at all.

Re: Roll bar painting question?
I just did a complete roll-cage in a Duster with the Rust-o-leum, Hammer finish black. This turned out super. Get a quart of the paint about $14, will be more than enough, I bought a pack of two small foam rollers, the package is the tray and a pack of two foam 1" brushes. Painting was simple and easy, even the to bars back to the trunk area. Used the foam brushes to get the gusset plates and tight areas then rolled the paint on.

Re: Roll bar painting question?
A few years ago I was told the tech department does not like hammer tone type finishes in either paint or powder coating. While it is legal and will pass, the reason they do not like that rough finish is its too hard to see a crack that could develop somewhere in a tube or at a weld.

How bout some wood grain contact paper :D I saw an ENTIRE Dodge neon done with it inside and out....it was ...... interesting..... I did mine "the hard way" with etching primer, it bonds really nice, then Urethane with a flattening agent, I didnt get it as flat as aI wanted. |
Re: Roll bar painting question?
VHT makes a roll bar and chassis paint that works great.
http://www.vhtpaint.com/rollbarchassis.html Eastwood also sells a great chassis paint either in spray or brush on. http://www.eastwood.com/specialty-co...sol-14-oz.html http://www.eastwood.com/ew-chassis-b...&parent_id=103 |

Repainted mine last year with Rustoleum and a regular brush, no primer. Worked great. I used 2-sided tape to position the rollbar padding and keep it from rolling around the bar, and then wrapped it with Duck Tape to protect it.

it did take about 2 coats of gloss black rustoleum spray paint. |
Re: Roll bar painting question?
RustOleum spray here too..works great.
As a side note RustOleum also makes engine enamel, and it too is quality stuff. |

Re: Roll bar painting question?
I used POR-15 with foam brushes. Flowed out very nice, no brush marks...
In my research before I tackled this job, a product called OneShot, sign paint was highly recommend, but it is pricey |
Re: Roll bar painting question?
I sprayed mine when the car was apart with Sikkens 'Rally Black' with an epoxy primer underneath. The interior was completely out and the car wasnt painted yet made it real easy, if you dont want to totally dismantle the car rustoleum or trem-clad areosol or brushable would work well. I have painted many rollbars professionally and the masking up the interior is a HUGE pain in the rear end! The Sikkens 'Rally Black' also comes in a 'spray bomb' and its shine is exactly the same gloss as factory chassis and underhood paint. The prep of the bars is the most important, lacquer thinner or a wax and grease remover (engine cleaner is the same thing), a red scotch brite pad, another wipe down and its ready for paint. As a side note spray bombs or non- catalized paints are no where near as tough as hardened paints.

Re: Roll bar painting question?
Thank you everyone for the advise and pictures. I was thinking of painting my cage grey, does this have any effect on the prep? I am leaning twards rustoliem and spong brushes.

Re: Roll bar painting question?
I used PPG acrylic lacquer over Rustoleum primer; wanted to match my interior color.
