Live from Phoenix - NHRA Arizona Nationals
9 Attachment(s)
A few minutes ago they opened the gates and it was like the second coming of the Gold Rush - racers were hellbent to get into the pits -- don't know why the big hurry as we're all going out by the lake - no Sportsman exceptions thank you .After a couple of days of R&R everyone's batteries are recharged and can't wait until they drop the flag tomorrow morning .You wouldn't believe how the place is already - if I didn't know better I'd say there are more cars than at Pomona -- optical illuision probably .
Today is mostly parking and tech -- most of us will take time to do maintenance and some clean-up on race cars and tow vehicles alike .Took a few pics just for fun .........In the first picture is Wayne Totaro -- the new licorce consumer champ -- he and Mark ate eight pounds ( 7 red and 1 black ) in a little over in a week -- Wal-Mart stock went up .In the picture he's trying to borrow some off a Japanese guy with no luck ..............How fitting it is to have a bankrupt sign next to the track ( see pic 2 ) .............later -- we've got generator problems to solve -- more of Wayne 's non -maintenance coming back to haunt him . How about the lake next to our pit ..............its a real ride to the starting line .Later .......... For those of you interested it a very sunny day with temps in the low seventies |

Re: Live from Phoenix - NHRA Arizona Nationals
Thanks for the pictures Jack. I'm not going to Firebird this year, saw you run at Pomona. I have to get my old thunderbolt ready for a PSCA race here in Las Vegas. It seems now after almost 50 years since I started racing and all the different cars I've had the stockers and Super stocks get my attention the most.

The lines getting in today lasted to the end of the day ( see pic one ) -- not sure where they are putting everyone but I'm more than sure some won't be pleased . Tonight some "friends" took me out to dinner - where you ask ? They told me about a great place - the "Heart Attack Grille" -- sounded good so .......ya gotta see the picture .Lastly -- the Winternationals Stock winner ( although not here yet - he's at school ) Brad Burton was rewarded here with beachfront property .................

Re: Live from Phoenix - NHRA Arizona Nationals
Went the the Heart Attack Grill last year when I went out for the D-7 race and "WOW" talk about blowing a News Years Resolution. The food is just unreal and the the waitress there....must say very nice (them alone could give you a heart attack).
It maybe out of your way a little bit but there is this Mexican Restaurant (not sure of the name...cause it's a hole in the wall that sits on the corner) in Apache Junction that is too die for. My good friends the Taylors took me there when I got into town last year and the Burritos were out of this world. |

Today was one of those days that we all need but don't want to admit to -- clean , polish , adjust and just plain get ready for our first pass down the 1320 .Even the NHRA was doin' it today - the track looks great and all of their new FORD support vehicles are spiffed up and shiny awaiting tomorrow and the crowds that will view them .
Most of us got teched in today -- and again without much fanfare thank God .Unlike the old days when we got our "stuff" busted everytime we came to a national event today the new NHRA is more about making suggestions about how we can be safer and welcoming us to have a good and safe race .The economy has changed us all for sure...............took a few pics along the way today . Tidbits- Spoke with Joey Wilkes today - he won't run the GTO at this event- but he will drive the Challenger that Irv Johns owns in A/SA . |

Here's a few more pics -- seems there are more than the normal amount of Chrysler products at this event - sooooo........................
PS-- Almost forgot - for those of you keeping tally -- our champion licorce eater ( Wayne Totaro ) today while at a CVS purchased another three pounds bring the total up to a whopping eleven pounds since he left home -------- soon strawberry twizlers will be coming out his -- ah ....ears ! ! ! |
Re: Live from Phoenix - NHRA Arizona Nationals
Jack,,,have someone take you up on the hill to Rustler's Roost,,its a great place and the food is good also. You can even order rattlesnake if you want to. After dark a beautiful view of the Valley of the Sun,,,,,,,,,good luck this weekend too.

Re: Live from Phoenix - NHRA Arizona Nationals
Jack, I think Wayne needs to install a licorice dispenser in the racer, ala the Waynes Worlds Pacer!!.....Tom

Re: Live from Phoenix - NHRA Arizona Nationals
Finally ! ! ! In a little less than an hour we hit the track and what a pretty morning -- blue skies and sunshine - what a day it will be .Temp at this moment is 53 degrees , barometer at 28.65 with 51% humidity and a final DA of1599 - not to terrific for this early in the day .
SuperStreet out first then Stock ............. |

Greetings from New England Jack... The M/SA Harry Dolittle '02 Firebird....That would be a V6 combo, or a LS1 convertible car? Mid 40's, clear and sunny here for the past 2 days. Snow is disappearing....but I won't say it's spring just yet. Good luck out there and go some (6--7) rounds.... :) WJ
