Memphis Track Closed!

Press Release
DOVER MOTORSPORTS, INC. ANNOUNCES CLOSING OF MEMPHIS MOTORSPORTS PARK AND REALIGNMENT OF RACING DATES
Release date: October 30, 2009
Contact: Timothy R. Horne
Sr. Vice President - Finance
302-857-3292

Dover Motorsports, Inc. (NYSE-Symbol: DVD) announced today that it was ceasing all operations at Memphis Motorsports Park and that it would not be promoting any events in Memphis in 2010.

As previously announced, the Memphis facility had been under an agreement of sale to Gulf Coast Entertainment but Gulf Coast was unable to secure financing.

“This was a difficult decision for us, but one that ultimately was dictated by economics,” said Denis McGlynn, President and CEO of Dover Motorsports. “We greatly appreciate the many years of dedication shown by our Memphis employees and their efforts to make Memphis such a great destination for the racing community – from racing fans and drivers to sponsors, team owners and sanctioning bodies. For all concerned, including the Memphis community, it is truly sad to see Memphis Motorsports Park taken off the racing schedule. NASCAR has approved the realignment of our NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and NASCAR Nationwide Series events from Memphis Motorsports Park to our Nashville and Gateway facilities.”

The realigned events and dates are as follows:

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
Nashville Superspeedway
April 2, 2010
(together with NASCAR Nationwide Series event on April 3, 2010)

NASCAR Nationwide Series
Gateway International Raceway
October 23, 2010

An ASA race scheduled for next weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park will still be held at the track.

Ticket refunds for 2010 events will be mailed out to fans in the next few weeks.

The Company is expected to release its earnings for the third quarter on Monday, November 2 and will disclose additional financial details relative to the closure of its Memphis facility shortly.

Re: Memphis Track Closed!

We enjoyed Memphis. One year pitting with trailers backed out in the mud and M.H. on pavement. Next year parked in the valley under force knowing it would rain. THEN towed out of 12 inchs of water by tractors. One year or two on the airport land as they scrapped off the sod from the old runways...
Then I jammed my back one year getting out of the truck and skipped class and racing because I could not stand up. Brian tore a slick off at the line and missed the tree by inchs. We changed the wheel behind the water box and I dragged myself back to bed.
Then there was the points meet where it rained one hour and they spread oil the next causing eliminations at 10Pm Sunday. I left while still in to attempt to make the drive overnight to work at 7AM. Two rigs driven by all four of us over night. Late by less than 1/2 hour and fined 2500$ as an example to a partner who NEVER could get to work... (Never fined either).. But We really did enjoy Memphis.

Memphis was much better than some of the other race tracks. And Corkys Barbecue was great. I will miss it, Beale St and all.Maybe someone will buy it and reopen.

I know alot of people dont like him but if the Al Alnabi shiek really wants to buy a track this would be a good opportunity to buy a nice track and maybe even get a National event to go along with it.

I liked Memphis too. Havent had a tremendous amount of luck there, but that was my fault ! Damn shame. Beale St., thats great, Corky's, Rendenzevous, and many more.

I hope some one will grab that up, it would be a real shame and a loss not to.

Sorry to hear this. Memphis will always be a special place for me. I won my first national event there in 98. I also won there in 02. Don't know if I would have ever raced there again, but now it's no longer a possibility. I have a lot of great memories from that track.

Ed,

If Dan chose to spend the money do you think he has enough land to get the pits in Tulsa big enough for an NHRA national event.

Think this had anything to do with him switching to NHRA?

Thanks,
Bill

Horrible. There's a lot more places that could use a 2nd event LONG before any track should ever get a 3rd.

I think it's funny they dumped VMP and then Memphis closes.
It may be a good thing. NHRA should also look at dumping a few more maybe cutting back to 16-20 races.
I liked Memphis the time I went hate to see any track close in these trying times.

Sorry to hear about this. I was just there Oct 16th-18th for the NMCA World Finals / LSX Shootout,,my first time in Memphis. A very nice facility,,, especially compared to the national event track in my own back yard!
Hopefully the place will get "rescued" and not go the way of Ontario Motor Speedway,,Orange County Raceway,,and (insert name here), among others that are no longer with us.

I liked Memphis too. Fairly easy pull for me and a nice facility compared to many. It was fun to play SCCA racer coming off the end of the track where the return road was part of the road course. I always felt like the car needed a couple of rounds of wedge to really cut that corner though. :D

Sorry to see it go. Sounds like a good candidate for George Howard to add to his collection.

Re: Memphis Track Closed!

I hate we also lost our div 4 race there, yet we still have to go that arm pit at Noble. I say "have to", but a lot of SS cars didn't a few weeks ago. SS cars located only 130 miles away, cars that went to Houston twice, included. A lot of them don't want to deal with the sorry starting line, many that showed up said they wished they hadn't. I thought that might be the race Tulsa got.

Re: Memphis Track Closed!

I think it will be interesting to see what happens to the property. It's not in an area of Shelby County that's going to get a Mall or even a new subdivision. There is a lot of industrial property around the track and a lot that is vacant and for sale. I would think that someone might be able to buy this for a really good price and make a go of it as a race track. I just wonder if it's going to auction or be sold by a real estate broker?

If we lost a race here in the midwest, NHRA needs to be looking for a suitable replacement in this same area.

Re: Memphis Track Closed!

Who raced there that knows the Memphis management? PBIR has hired Rittenberry as the track manager. Is he good for the racer? He has got to be the 5th to 6th manager in as many years at (Moroso) PBIR. You seem to get to know the manager and the next week he is gone, a new one steps in, no changes to the way things are done. Just more confusion! I hope Rittenberry works out, the car counts suck because the lack of communication between tracks(Immoc and PBIR) and tracks to racers.
