Protrans Fluid

What type of trans fluid does ProTrans recommend for their MoPar 904 trannys? Also has anybody seen a performance gain using synthetic fluid over non-synthetic? Jim

I got my ProTrans from Joel's on Joy, in Detroit and was told to use Type F, No synthetic's at all ! The Smiths have also said the same ! Mine have been perfect, in the SS and the Stk 'r........John

Re: Protrans Fluid

I have only used type F in mine, FYI, I believe type F is being phased out and being replaced by type FA. I have bought all the type F I can find ...

Re: Protrans Fluid

My trans man told me I should run Mopar + 3 (likely now +4) in my 904 when I ran it a few years back. Surely not a ProTrans, but a slightly worked 904 with a Dynamic converter. He said the +3 had a better friction coefficient. I think that is also why Type F is recommended.

Sounds like the FA should work...no?

I totally missed the SS/F - SS/FA joke part of your answer. I though it was actual tech speak...

Re: Protrans Fluid

my understanding is Type A is for older automatics ( like in the 60's) --Type F is for stuff up to the late 70's---Dexron/Mercon for up to the late 80's early 90's---FA replaces both A & F--- dexron II & III is the replacement for all of the previous fluids---F has the best friction modifiers for the harshest/firmer shifts in a racing trans------Best advice "follow the trans builders reccomendations"---Comp387

Not sure about stockers or S/Stockers. But I know a few bracket guys who use straight hydraulic oil from tractor supply.Buy it in 5 gal pails much cheaper than ATF and they swear by it.----I dont know never tried it.
