Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Good morning. Time to start the "Live From" reporting thread to cover what will be a great weekend of Class Racing. The weather could not be better - clear skies forecasted for the entire weekend and cooler than normal temps. Be back soon as racing on Friday begins.

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Q1 for Stock and S/S is done - in fact -all 3 categories will be done by 10::30. Class racing is up next. I'll search out the sheets soon and do my best to correctly post them.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...psf5buh8xk.jpg Promoter Mike B was busily running around early this morning. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...pskhjsy3ov.jpg A number of cool N/SS cars join us this year. Lots of Mopars http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...ps4idbxno7.jpg Craig Dawson made the trip from Illinois to watch. Craig has run a number of class cars in the past including Ben Morgan's Max Wedge at the 93 Springnationals. |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
I know there are still more to come, but was curious as to the car count.
Thanks. |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Round 1 of stock is complete - the sheets from round 1 are here. 39 S/S and 75 Stockers. But plenty of cars are still coming in.

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Mike,
How many NSS cars are on the premises? |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Round 1 of Stock and S/S are done as the schedule is moving quick today. With the number of cars that have come in this morning, they just called a clean up run. Hey. That sounds like a good Idea !
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...psj5ojbyve.jpg Everybody's favorite D1 Tech Man Dave Ley is here They just called round 2 of Stock class. Be back soon. |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
The event shirts are hot sellers - XXXL already sold out

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
And now for today's Mopar Trivia audience participation question. Take a close look at the intake on this N/SS car. What is unique and what was it called?
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...psxm2ywu5i.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...ps6c5vwouk.jpg Mark - about 20 N/SS cars. |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Any videos or pics of class ?
|
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Post a picture of the event T-shirts,, we bought a bunch back there last year, and I'd like to see what I missed by staying home. Thanks, Mike.

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
I think the intake is called a sidewinder

Truly unique. What a piece. |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Eric - that's what I thought too. Not exactly correct. Look closer. Only about 50 of these were ever produced.
|
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
That intake was called a sonoramic, my father had a 1960 plymouth fury 383 with that intake
|
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Those are short rams. They don't have the valley casting separating the ports all the way to the carb. Only the long rams had that.
Those appear to be the water heated version? |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
We got winners. It's a short ram. Note how the individual runners at the head merge into a single runner half way to the carb. And that name is correct too.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...psrormymfk.jpg Back to the action at the track. The Quick 16 worked down to Garrett Ghezzi in his AMX vs Decker. In stock it's Chuck Beach vs Marthy Buth in his Turbo Mustang. Watching Buth run, it looks like he can run as far under as he wants. For the overall title its Buth vs Decker. |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
The Quick 16 Stock Finalists were Marty Buth and Chuck Beach - with Buth advancing to race Ricky Decker. Garrett Ghezzi was the other S/S finalist. Buth seemed to be Ble to run as far under as he wanted.
Racing was stopped during the SS Quick 16 to scrape the track to be sure the bite was there. A $50 Gamblers race was added this afternoon with 100% payback. The N/SS cars ran a gamblers race that was planned. About 30 cars ran the Gambers race. Several people mentioned that the entire Saturday and Sunday program could be run to completion tomorrow. Have hot heard of any plans to do so There doesn't seem to be the same support from non D3 racers like last years race. George Yago's COPO was impressive and sporting a Ray Barton Engines decal. |

Wheres the coverage ?

Here is a write up about the history and development of the early ram engines. Long and wordy, but interesting history. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/sonoramic.html |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Schedule update: Run order change to STK, N/SS, SS to alleviate congestion at scales/fuel check.
The Main Events will be run to completion today to allow people to get an early start on travel tomorrow. Thank you so much for all those racers and sponsors who put their heart and soul into this event. If there is enough interest, we can run the Combo race after 2nd or 3rd of the main event, and run it concurrent with the Main Event. |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Jack McCarthy is always whining about being at such a disadvantage in U/SA against "the Cadillac" and others, but it looks like his -1.443 qualifying shot was better than what "the Cadillac" did at Brainerd at -1.414. What's the deal, Jack? Sounds like a Brer Rabbit whine to me. . .
Just sayin'. |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
The Cadillac was 1.71 under the IHRA index.

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
It's so cool that old Stockers never die. You D1 veterans will remember Richie DiCola Chevelle that was passed on to "Pittsburgh Jim" Henderson after being raced by Dave McConnell
. This is Jims son Scott who is now driving the car. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...pse3i62sh5.jpg Those that I spoke with like idea of getting the racing done today. Hats off to Michael and his Loose Rocker Team for thinking of your customer. Another one of my Milan Dragway Class Racer colleagues Bill Foder - aka The Crow (note the arms) and also the Professor. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...psgahb0prb.jpg |

Who doesn't love 66-67 Novas? There a a number of Stockers here starting with Craig Sauerbaugh's Crate Motor Stick car from western Michigan
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...pskhbgi9j9.jpg Along with his U.S. Nationals Winning Camaro. Dave Walther "plays" with this F/S Nova that is a joy to watch go down the track. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...pskbnkjf69.jpg Bill Sempsrott has his 283 Stick Nova here. http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...ps5cthsn8o.jpg And the lone auto Nova belongs to Dick Kincade http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...psm6utktba.jpg |

We are on track to start eliminations between noon and 1:00. I have heard that you can monitor the action on 1320go.

BREAKING NEWS JUST IN - CHEVY BREAKS FORD REAR.
Jim Boburka knocked a few teeth off the ring gear on his COPO. Looks like it will be fixed for first round http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...pszwywcpdk.jpg http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...psqcyz3p85.jpg A short bit of downtime to clean up the oil from a hurt SS engine. And there are more cars that came in this morning. |
Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Gloria Ley -Dave's wife - is here running the scales. These two have what I think to be the perfect retirement gig going. They both work NHRA national and D1 races together. Dave told me that they have been gone just about every weekend since Pomona. What a lucky and happy couple. And better yet they are from the Garden State like me.

Re: Live from the Auto Meter Northern Class Nationals II
Tony Scopa, his daughter Marrissa and Mike Allain made the 13 hour tow from Massachusetts. Tony is a hardcore Mopar SS racer - that's a HEMI STICK SHIFT! Tony was here last year and broke his trans. Racers like Tony and cars like this make the Northern Class Nationals so cool.
