I want the best Olds wet sump oil pan option........
All you guys that race (wet sump) '70-'72 "A" bodies, (stock chassis and steering) with a small block......... Who's oil pan are you using, and what are you using for oil pan mods? I am looking for better oil control (under braking) in the pan.
I like this pans oil control but the capacity is a concern... https://www.cantonracingproducts.com...&category=1504 |

Re: I want the best Olds wet sump oil pan option........
I use a stock 455 oil pan with an oil pump to main baffle for launching (stick car) and a crank scraper. Std volume speed pro pump. 6800 to 7200 in the lights depending on gearing. The only time I had low oil pressure braking was when I tried running 4 qts of oil. It dropped to 10lbs. Same setup on my 67 400 car. Like they were twins! Thought for sure the small block would be different.

I've had some loss of oil pressure issues in the past as well. Another tip is using oil-restricted pushrods. Smith Bros. sells them.

Pretty typical, unfortunately. I would guess close to 50% are not very good about answering e-mails from their web site. Concerning the pan, don't be concerned about advertised sump capacity, 6 qts. is plenty. I would get a pan that is as deep as possible, yet without worrying about bottoming out. It's not about increasing capacity, it's about lowering the sump away from the rotating assembly. My .02.
