Wasn't "Smyly Buick" out of the Boston area? Used to see Smyly Buick cars run at Connecticut Dragway back in the '60's, unless there's another....many fast "Stage I and 2" Buicks came out of that place in the late 60's--early 70's:)WJ

Re: Cool race car names!

Yes, Smyly Buick was in Malden MA I beleive. The driver was __ Miller.
The Smyly Gran Sport was raced at Epping and Colchester (CT).
My company is building the Gran Sport drag cars for each year from '65
to '70. The 1965 Reynolds Buick Gran Sport (California) that Lenny Kennedy and Jim Bell (Kennebell Speed) raced out there in the '60s.
2015 marks 50 years of the Buick Gran Sport, we have a national campaign underway, "The Buick Gran Sport and The Muscle Car Era".
and will display these cars during our national tour starting this fall.

There's a stock-appearing silver blue Buick 455 Gran Sport here in Ma. that runs Central Mass Dragracers Association and nostalgia events....a real beauty. Mike Dubuque runs 9's w/this car---very impressive. ( and yes, it's 455 Buick-powered) WJ

Re: Cool race car names!

If Buicks weren't so expensive to buy there would have been tons more (muscle cars) made back then. Aftermarket parts aren't so plentiful either for the same reason.
However, Buick engines, especially the 401, was a history maker in the'60s.

Referring to previous page about Buick's, My 67 Buick GS (all steel 3600 lbs) with a Stage II 455 ran 10.90's back in the 70's was named "Animal Eater" ran at National on Long Island and E-Town, also a few times in Connecticut. I believe the car is in Long Island and would love to find the car. It has been converted back to street use.

WE are looking for a '67 GS for our Buick Campaign. If that car can be found and restored as the "Animal Eater" it would fit nicely into the campaign.

I know this is a very old thread...but just came accross it...

Yep...the 55 Chevy was the first All American (Was the Dutch Boy something or other first). Then there was a 1966 Chevelle (The AA 2), the 1965 Chevelle (The AA 3).....and many..many years later (during the 80's)...The All American IV. It was the only bracket car....a 67 Nova with a "292" Inline 6....and the one I remember the most, since I was the crew!! ;)

Story I heard...and well, take it for what you want (lol)...was that Kenny bought the 55 cause he couldn't beat it.

Back in 1963-64 I ran a green 61 Ford Falcon with a 289 in it, called the "Tin Lizard". I ran it a few times at a couple of local tracks Gragway 42, and Quaker City, until I figured out how overmatched I was... Goats and Mopars eating my lunch regularly....

And now we have a 2009 Drag Pak name "MegaManiac" appropriate for both me and my son Drooze...

A couple that Wade Mahaffey mentioned.... Can't Stop Dancin', a good looking car, then and now.

Also to Mike Bassin, I remember Glen Rennie's "Snort", what a great name! I last saw that car in the late 70's in excellent condition at the Rennies' business. I would not be surprised if it is the same way today. He also had a jet boat with the same name.

As for names I always like Bob Bailey's "Missile Mouse".

Back in the 70s there were two local cars I always thought werekind of cool----"Objection!, a Pontiac Judge whose lettering was done up in baloon style letters & "Purple Passion" (unoriginal, I know) a Challenger whose lettering was done up likea popular soft-drink of the era. Those guys just looked professional in a time where "pro" Stocker class vehicles were just starting...........

Re: Cool race car names!

Wow, this thread's been around since '08! Any "senior" early 1960's racer or fan from around Div.1 remember Pete Murphy and "The Wapid Wabbit"? Car was a bright kelley metallic green, w/radiused rear wheel wells, a 283" '55 Chevy post car that ran E or w/ballast, F Gas. This Nat. Record holding car that was from New England, (central Ma.) raced the eastern seaboard tracks, mostly Orange, Ma, Sanford, Me., Charlestown, R.I., Connecticut Dragway, and Lebanon Valley Dragway, and was the 1964 Summernationals E Gas champ at Indy (before it was changed to U.S. Nationals). Pete now has a '72 Chevelle-bodied Top Sportsman car...."Wapid Wabbit II".....Man, time flies.....WJ :D

Re: Cool race car names!

WJ,
Don't know if you ever saw a black 72' Buick Riviera w/455 cubed up there,
around 74'/75'.
Car was pimped out, but nicely done, with satin finish Ansens and lettered "Johnny Wadd"
In reference to John Holmes, the porn star actor.
On the trunk deck lid, it was lettered "This car is long and hard'
Car was out of Hartford, downtown area:rolleyes:
The damn thing ran in SS/PA or SS/QA, and did run respectible times.

I didnt read all the pages but my personal favorite was Marty Snowballs 69 Mustang Cobrajet stocker called "Cobrajunk". Maybe its because I named it, I dont know.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it - Skip Nordenbergs' "Cobra Rat" Mustang gasser, driven in the early seventies by Chris Piersall. One of my personal favorites!

Re: Cool race car names!

Paul, I don't remember the Porn-star Riviera, but there were a couple of other boys that always came with a large crew and large contingent of fans from Connecticut. They ran a early BB Chevelle automatic stocker that had "Cool Breeze" written down each side. In smaller letters it read, "If you are hot, Breeze will cool you off". That car was a savage.....when ever he raced around here, he definitely cooled alot of guys off, right onto their trailer...:D WJ

I've dubbed my Drag Pak "The Phantom"... Anyone that knows the dragpak story and all the trials it went thru know what I'm talking about.. One day its there and the next minute its gone... And this happened almost daily for over 14 months.... ;);)

Paul Ceasrine 07-07-2010 05:08 PM

Re: Cool race car names!

WJ,
The only reason I remember the Porn-Star Riviera, is because the cool guys that had the car always played "Superfly" (Curtis Mayfield), on the cars 8-track. Those big Buicks did have the best factory stereo systems of the day.
Was a consistent SS/PA or SS/QA winner with 14.70's. Not bad for a
#4300lb beast. Kept all the class trophy's in the trunk, and would trade them for a Six-Pack of Colt 45. Tall-boys of course.
