Nitro Joe,

I have a couple of photo's of your Mom at the 68' Springnationals.
I'm guessing she must have had a nice co-sponsor from GoodYear.

The one photo of her versus the 'The Hustler' (SS/BA Dart) of
J. Corles shows a "T" on "The Hustler" door panel, indicating a
class trophy/final run.
Did she make it to the class finals in SS/BA at the Springnationals.

Are you west side or east side? Were do you take it too? I would love to see it when you have it out this spring.

Re: Original hemi dart information

IZZY,

At the beginning of 1968 the Super Stock class breaks were as follows;
SS/B--------- 6.00 - 6.99
SS/C--------- 7.00 - 7.69
SS/D--------- 7.70 - 8.69
SS/E--------- 8.70 - 9.47
SS/F--------- 9.48 - up

A class for SS/A class ( 0 - 5.99 ) was left open as a possible
entry from Chevy or Ford, which never developed.

At the 1968 Winternationals, the 65' Race Hemi and 64 1/2' Race Hemi cars were classed in SS/B.

Re: Original hemi dart information

IZZY,

The 1968 NHRA Springnationals S/S Eliminator was won by
Sox & Martin in their SS/D 67' R/O Hemi Belvedere (w/GTX lettering).

They defeated Don Grotheer in the SS/B 68' Hemi Cuda.
The Cuda at that time was all-white, and sponsored by
'Cable Chrysler-Plymouth' out of Oklahoma.

Re: Original hemi dart information

well i got some information regarding daryl's dart today, i talked to tony ?(his last name slips me now, he is ron and rick rickman's brother in law,he worked for castaldo, he said the dart that my dad and uncle had is not the castaldo car , the castaldo car had earmark things that he would have remembered when he saw the car in 1982 1983 at my dads shop , he also told me that the car he was worked on (suspension) in 69 through early 1970's was # 50 from the production line, he also said that the car had everything possible in the front end suspension made from titanium. he re counted the castaldo car that was crashed at e town got loose from oil on the track and had no trick front end suspension parts.

Daryl i have combed through thousands of pictures, i cannot find the pictures of the dart from when my dad got it, i am missing a large container of race car pictures dating from 1964-5 all the way through 1985 or so.

daryl what is the production number of your car? i asked tony if he was familiar with any darts from the peekskill ny area that were painted similar to castaldos cars and he said no,tony remembered the dart when he came to look at it and remembers it looked just like castaldos car (paint etc) but was not it .he also told me the car he worked on was an automatic car.

so i have just one question what was the car my dad had in the barn that had the complete trans tunnel cut out and what happened to it? another lost hemi car!!!!!

Re: Original hemi dart information

Hemi-Head,

When the 68' Hemi Cuda's and Darts came out,
the NHRA set a minimum ET / Index
SS/B 10.85
SS/BA 10.90

The first-early records were set by
Don Grotheer in SS/B; 10.91 @ 131.19

Bill Stiles set the SS/BA ET record with an 11.06 at
Island DragStrip, New Jersey in August 68'.

I'm pretty sure J. Corles (sic) had the first SS/BA ET record with
'The Hustler' Dart (11.09)

Both records were 'soft'.
