Re: Stock seat clarification please
First off, this is an honest to goodness situation that I saw with my own eyes. A number of years ago I had a buddy in stock eliminator that
took some parts to a shop to have them chemically cleaned( if you know what I mean) anyway there was a set of completely de-upholestered Camaro front seats there for chemically cleaning . Both seats were sitting in front of me with a tag with the customers name on them.(Yes, he raced at the same track as I did) Now I dont know how much weight was removed from them, but they definately came back with less metal on them. Were the seats compromised as far as safety, dont know, but how far does it go? If safe lightweight racing are allowed hopefully no one will try and modify them even further. |

I think Trista Henderson should have to sit on 1969 Phone books in her Nova so she can see the tree.

Re: Stock seat clarification please
This has gotten ridiculous real fast. All I would like is for NHRA to open up to allowing a racer to switch to a stock appearing racing safety seat *if* he (or she) wants to. I really don't see this as killing Stock Class racing! After seeing horrendous crashes of some Stock race cars and seeing many seat failures in street crashes as a career Paramedic, I know I would feel safer with a quality race seat. I would like the option that's all.
I also do not appreciate being called a Johnny come lately, no name stroke by you Bob. I probably have been racing Stock and Super Stock much longer than you and I am entitled to my opinion. Maybe you would rather race without a helmet or 5 point harness because they don't look stock? Jim . |

Re: Stock seat clarification please
Jim,
If you are not a Johnny come lately, no name stroke disregard that statement... Just remember that rules changes stack up and what rule change do you think will be the end of Stock?????? In 2013 NHRA might just leave Section 10 out of the rule book.... I also raced my car in Stock Eliminator back in 1963 at West Hampton & Islip.....Moved to California in 1965 I would prefer not to get into a contest about who started first.... Let us make it be about NOT being who will be the last car to go down an NHRA drag strip in Stock Eliminator |
Re: Stock seat clarification please
what is stock in stock?

Re: Stock seat clarification please
For those of us who remember,I believe back in 1971 NHRA drastically
changed the rules for stock eliminator. Basically all the stock eliminator cars were mandated to go to superstock.Stock eliminator was now a clean sheet of paper, with very few modifications allowed. No slicks or headers.Factory cam shafts only.It was pure stock with open exhausts. Now I believe NHRA was fed up giving all the stock guys all their little requests for so many years that the cars running stock were far ,far away from anything resembling a stock vehicle. I remember asking the Div 1 tech director why the drastic change and he said there were so few differences between stock and super stock that they felt it best to combine the classes and make stock more like its namesake. I think we need to look at this again. How many differences are there between the stock and super stock classes! ed |
Re: Stock seat clarification please
The rule book use to say stock appearing seats. It never said that seats had to be the right year for the car. When you have cars going 150 mph plus maybe racing seats should be an option. Oh I forgot those cars that run that fast have racing seats.

Re: Stock seat clarification please
Maybe if the term "Racing Seat" was changed to "Sports Car Seat" or "Touring Car Seat" would be more acceptable. The stamped aluminum seats which require custom bent CM tubing frame welded and a thin cover are not stock appearing. Be careful what you wish for because the investment in the purchase, fabrication and installation can be substantial. The image of SS, Comp, PS legal seats will never be digested as in any way stock appearing.:rolleyes:
Upholstered, padded sports car seats could be acceptable. Many production cars through the years have been supplied with Recaro and other well known aftermarket seat manufactures products for years. Don't know about bench seats but will say the the seat in my 2007 Silverado 2500 HD is much better than my old 73 K1500 Sierra Grande. So there may be units from late model cars that could be acceptable. More than likely these seats will be heavier than your 40 year old stuff but it will be safer and bring opportunity to move some lead around. :D;) |

PS your comment about the hoods is ridiculous, although I did see at hood latch fail on a 69 camaro at the Sportsnationals in Belle Rose. I hope the driver had a full face helmet, because there was glass everywhere. |
