Division 1 pro stock campaigner in the 70's Larry Sengstack had 2 cars a 1970 Maverick with a 427 SOHC called Jersey Rattler. He also had Bob Glidden's 1970 Mustang prostocker called American Flyer.

I am playing around with naming my 68 Impala Stocker "Bowtie Behemoth" Jimi and I are friends and he supports the idea!

"Passionate Poncho" was a 57 Pontiac raced by Jack Thropp. I think it was a 347 with Rochester injection.

I am one of those old timers that had the name Psych-Out on my 69 big block Nova when I first started racing back at Detroit Dragway in the 70's. I picked the name partly to denote the psychological, or the mental attribute of racing, and partly because it was a catchy name. After being absence from racing for many years, I just carried over the name to the new car I built about 4 years ago, a 68 Camaro. About everyone had names on their cars back then, don't know why people got away from it. Spectators would not likely remember the name of racers so much, but would remember your car name and root for their favorite.

Wow.These are fun!! From Irwindale,Orange County, and Riverside from 1974-1988,I remember a red 65 GTO with a 427 and a tunnel ram of Paul Harris:Ponti-Rat, Pat Melendy's string of Plymouth Roadrunner bracket cars(he was the Bird Man),American Rikshaw from an earlier post, a yellow 69 Dodge-Poison Dart, a red Challenger called Live Bait, a whole lot of SBC 4 speed Camaros and Novas called Mighty Mouse,a rather rough 57 Chevy called Strictly Business, and in the early 80's,I had a 63 Chevy 409 called Rapid Transit. It was featured by Doug Marion in the March 84 Super Chevy, more recently I built a 68 Chevelle stocker that had a tendancy to corkscrew rather noticably as it pulled the left front wheel, I called it "Yank". I built another one and called it Yank II when I sold the first one to Tony Janes, after we upgraded the rear suspension, it tamed them down considerably, speaking of Tony, he and Marv Ripes had a 57 Chevy stocker called the Powerglide Prosecutor. He has a 4 door Chevelle today called the Powerglide Prosecutor II. We also have a red 68 Chevelle wagon O/SA car called "the Mule." It was originally supposed to be a test mule for various drive line combinations. Let's hear some more from those days in So Cal racing!!

Bracket racing legend, Johnny Labbous named all of his cars "Loose Caboose". Here's a pic of his SS/CA Plymouth from the late seventies. I traveled with him to many races. He won at Bristol two years in a row with this car. 1978 & 79. His car wouldn't run the index in super stock so he bracket raced it in IHRA's quick 32 class called Pro Street.

Hey Bob, that "Bankruptcy" name? Is that one picture from Indianapolis Raceway Park in the 70's? I remember a greenish Camaro that had that or a variation of that name in the 70's. May be the same car, maybe not.

Car names were always cool. I remember a 62-63 D/G Nova, local car named "Poppin Fresh".

Another one I recall, a case where the owner of the car made the name. It was a homebrew AA/GS owned by Ed Allen, I think that was his last name, forgive me, I'm going back 35-36 or so years, had "BIG ED" painted on the side. Big Ed was a character. He worked on that car out of a little one car garage, I'll use that term loosely, attached to his house. First time I met him, he shook my hand and then yelled out "Mommy, cook these boys up some of that fresh sausage and feed'em a sandwich, they look hungry"! Ed was to put it kindly, a big guy. The car would be a deathtrap by todays standards. A crude frame with a blown 392 Hemi bolted to it.

Baltimore-based Ken and Wayne Ewing campaigned this '62 409 Impala named "Mr. Intensified" until their younger brother 14-year old Gary joined the team as driver. Gary quickly demonstrated his value to the team by setting the A/Stock record at Capitol Raceway when he was just 15!! The engine was built by Racing Parts and Machine in Baltimore, and the fender well headers were fabricated by Herb Gebler. Major tuning decisions were made by oldest brother Ken.

The Ewing Brothers replaced their '62 Impala "Mr. Intensified" with a '69 Z28 Camaro named "The Little Zipper." The car has undergone many changes and improvements since September 1968 when Ken Ewing placed his order for this Z28 at Anderson Chevrolet in Baltimore. Nowadays the Ewing Brothers continue to race the latest version of the "The Little Zipper" though they discontinued use of the name long ago.
