Re: 1969 440 six pack Superbee & Road Runner.
In the fall of 1969 i got a job at a small chrysler plymouth dealer in millbury ma. At that time my daily driver was a 1933 dodge pickup i had hot rodded in the family garage--440 t-flite- 3.54 dana 60. It was work study deal -left at noon and worked til 6:00. My first day the eldest mechanic was swapping a short block in a brand new 1970 440+6 plum crazy cuda. Being curious i asked why. He told me that the ct owner had hurt the engine by holding the throttle on the floor when cold? Ok -why? He said the owner said that that was the only way to tell if the engine was a good one. WTF? The next day at work i spy a 1969.5 six pack rr sitting with the engine out. The car is brand new showing 8000 some miles on the odometer. I talked to the owner about buying the car and he said it is not for sale? Fast forward four months i am working on the line staring at this rr everyday. So the next weekend comes and they push it outside for some reason. I show up for work on monday and the hood is gone. So back inside it comes and i get to install a junkyard 383 2bbl and the body shop paints a used belvedere hood flat black. You can see where this going--the car is sold the next week --never saw it again.. The older tech who was working on the previously mentioned cuda said i,m glad that car is gone because he put two short blocks in it under warranty. You guessed it the ct guy was the prevous owner of the rr. He used to hold that throttle on the floor for some stupid reason and chrysler shut him off--so he ordered a a new cuda. After the short block was changed i was told that chrysler said his warranty was over! I never saw either car again and lived in that area for quite a while. RR was spring green 4-speed -black vinal roof...wanted it but couldn,t have it!
