Here is a photo of the car with Rich Thomas on the doors. Paint looks brand new in this photo! Where else will you see a paint job like this, definitely one of a kind by Imperial Kustoms
I can still see Rich Thomas lettering on the doors. |

Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
Just noticed the blue headlights. I do not know the history of this one so asking is there a Sox & Martin connection? They did some with blue headlights I believe.

I think the headlights went along with the blue paint scheme.
The attached photo is a winning finals run. Not sure of the race, I have just seen a picture with the news clipping claiming the win, but the writing was too small to read. Can anybody assist? |
Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
I too suspected a potential Sox & Martin connection due to the blue headlights and possibly the molded in rear spoiler. I know that I've seen a vintage pic of Ronnie Sox launching a BO29 Barracuda that had been updated with '69 grill, header panel, hood and trunk valence panel and I'm fairly certain that this particular S & M 'Lil Boss was sporting a rear deck spoiler very much like the one pictured here. I'll try to locate that pic from my old stack of Super Stock mags and post it here if I do.

While racing in and around the Memphis area Danny met and became friends with a driver who, himself, has been part of drag racing history. "I got to be good friends with Herb McCandless and he talked me into that hemi business." That "hemi business" included a 1966 hemi Dodge and, eventually, a classic 1968 hemi Barracuda. With the winnings from those cars and the proceeds from the sale of them, Danny was able to quit his job and start his own business. Danny raced the hemis for a couple of years and then switched back to a Chevrolet, one that he tried to race in the fledgling Pro Stock class. M68 |

back in the day....anybody know? As for your photo, I've studied it for a few minutes....and my first choice was Indy due to NHRA numbers and class on windows...but fences don't look right and not sure if Indy had return road on that side? If NHRA race....and Mr.Thomas travelled a bit....I'm almost thinking Niagara.... If AHRA race....could it be the other side of the Tulsa track...and same event as photo# 115? Note AHRA banner in photo...think Tulsa switched (to AHRA) in '69...Also think that "Drag 500" slicks were introduced...same year.... The stands/fences also look like Gary US 30, Detroit Dragway, or maybe even NY National....all AHRA-sanctioned around '69-'70-'71.... Well, it's getting late...and there are better archivists on here...can anybody id the year and race your photo was taken at? |
Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
Not trying to steal thread but picture# 115 could also be '70 or maybe '71....
Is that Jim Hayter in the red Camaro? He had a big box scoop then...but so did others! |
Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
Just received pic's of the Carpinet car. Experiencing technical difficulties trying post (thought I was out of the woods when figured out how to convert over from e/m). Being told pic's are too large. Will continue on !!!!!

Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
The Thomas car started out in red as "the judge". The blue scheme continued to around 1970 then onto the green and red as it stands today. The race win date will give an indication of the paint scheme change.
The photo was taken by Joe Stevens, Detroit dragway. There are some nice photo's on his site for sale. |

This was an original BO29 I bought it from Alan Halsey from Red Bank A/P in NJ. I paint it Black and updated the suspension and eventually sold it to Richard Beshore (worst decision I made), who won the second Hemi challenge with in 2002. Ironic note I build another SS/AA car (not original) and sold that to Jerry Jenkins, who won the 3rd Hemi challenge with it.

Easiest way of posting full size pictures is to have them stored in an account like photobucket. Then it's just a matter of copy & paste. Let me know if you need more assistance in doing it, as I'd love to see those pix. I'm no expert at this, just have enough knowledge to fumble my way through liteweight |

Here are the two best pic's Bob Carpinet sent me. He's in the process of redoing the car to as raced back in 76. His plan is to take it to select shows. This is a Sox & Martin car, with some pieces of a Dave Wren car, to make it complete. At the time, all his engines & transmissions were built by Tim Richards. Car still looks to be in great shape, what with being stored for 37 yrs.

Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
There was an original B029 car on display in the nostalgia area at this weekend's national event in Seattle. Pictures show it is the former "Gentle Ben"- DeFrank & Cohen- Harry Holton car. It was sporting an original appearing engine, (valve covers, intake and carbs), but there was some upgrades to the car itself, such as M/T wheels and tires, Cheetah shifter, gauges, etc. The Cuda was painted all white. A cool car with some deffinate history. I see there is a photo of the car on post #85.

Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
Maybe formerly the Jerry McClure "Scootin' Cuda" ?
Greenville MS was not that far away. "Slippery Fish"...........anyone? |
Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
Not a real BO car. If I am not mistaken this was built as a bracket car for Tommy Slaughter's son (Banning & Slaughter).

Good friend brought his beautiful B029 car out to the recent Woodburn Mopar race...these cars draw crowds whenever/wherever they make an appearance.

Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
1st, i have a 68 tribute dart hemi car, so i've followed liteweight's blog for sometime now and i have made friends with several racers that owned hurst darts and cudas because of this. i just discovered this blog last week and last evening i was at a private cruise-in and ran into my friend, jerry shankle, who bought arlen vanke's 1st cuda from arlen back in the day. now like arlen jerry's not a spring chicken anymore and doesn't mess with the computer much, so he asked me to post here for info about that car, as far as where it is now and such. thanks in advance for your replys. hemidart3, dave

Re: Original Hemi Cuda Info.......
Jim, thanks for the compliment. I'll try to live up to it.
Dale, the car hasn't been to Mission for two years. I took it to a TnT Friday in Sept. '11. That's the only time the car was at Mission. Danny, the white BO29 car that you saw at the Nationals in Seattle is owned by a guy who goes by "bobbyboy" on this site. He posted #2173, #2176 and #2177 on the "Original Hemi Dart" thread. I have not had the opportunity to meet him, but have seen his car. However, I have not seen his car at the track to be raced. He lives about 20 miles from me. Mark J gave me the owners list for this car. Thanks, Mark. The list is in reverse chronological order of ownership, i.e. me first: Denny Dormaier, WA Bill Johnson , WV Frank Spittle, NC Dr Eric Neumeyer,WI Jerry Shankel, OH John Wolf, KS Paul Suloff, OH Billy Lyons, OH A.J. Lancaster, TN John Livingston, TN I've included some pictures, including the car around 1987 with a blue paint scheme. http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/...ps32b4ad98.jpg http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/...psed4962be.jpg http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/...ps95b897dc.jpg http://i1292.photobucket.com/albums/...g?t=1378153883 Denny |
