The Datson "American Ric-shaw" was a super gas w/chevy power owned by
the auto shop teacher at my kids old high school University High in Irvine, CA.
he later moved up to a dragster and used to bring it into the shop at school.

My dad used that name on his 65 hemi car, his 67 car and his 68 dart. A man by the name of John Moore gave him that name when he drove a CHEBBY Nomad wagon in 64.

I kinda like my uncle name for his Opel GT. "Wind Of Change" Which was rather appropriate considering he changed from a small block 69 Camaro to the Buick V6 powered Opel GT. An alternate name for this car might have been "A Gallon Of Go" as this was a 3.8 litre engine which everyone knows that 3.8 L = 1 gallon.

Rich Oakes' "Resurrection" He is currently on number 3. He had 57 Chevy named the "Green Onion" before that, with of course, a big block.

"Gorilla Milk", 57 Chevy that was white.

How about the "Screamin' Yellow Zonker" modified production VW??

East Coast Mazda of Al McEachern named the "Rotary Rattler".

Chip Banney's gasser the "Dancing Bear".

Dennis Durban 57 Chevy "Sea Dog" and later a Z-28 "Sea Terror"
Hubert Buttry with Ivan Jordan driving 62 red metal flake 409 "Rompin Redskin"
Leon Miranian 58 Chevy Bel Air :Fuel Injected Banana" and later 65 Impala "Armenian Rug Beater"
Malcom Durham 63 Z-11 Chevy "Strip Blazer"
Sam Pannuty 55 Chevy Gasser "Poor Boy"
Robbie Edwards 63 Max Wedge Dodge "Mr Dependable"

And in an aside for Michael Beard, I just rememberd that Patches was lettered with self-adhesive shelf paper. This was in the mid-sixties. What a pioneer, huh?
My uncle was an art teacher, and he taught me that trick. I lettered about a half a dozen cars with Con-Tac paper. I'd sketch the design out on the Con-Tac paper in pencil, spray paint it the main color(s) with those little cans of Testor hobby paint, then hand paint or airbrush details onto them. Then I had to cut the design out with scissors. Application was a tough process! It actually worked really good in the beginning, but after a few years, the quality of the material and the adhesive dropped significantly.

That's how I originally did my "Dust Devil II", along with "Miss Misery", "Turn Me Loose", and a few other cars that ran at Beaver Springs.
http://www.staginglight.com/images/cars/delcamp.jpg

This photo was from shortly after I finally got brave enough to hand paint and airbrush the "Dust Devil" and the Taz directly on the door for the first time.

That's a Classic! I would love to be able to pick Billy's brain like you can...ya know he's quit proud of you...he told me not to tell though! I ask him once why you wouldn't run NHRA too. He said you would run where the money was.

Michael Beard 05-08-2008 08:46 AM

Re: Cool race car names!

If you look closely, Billy is of course adjusting his helmet/glasses/sleeves/position in his seat. When Billy stages a car, a guy steals 3rd base. He's also the only guy I've ever seen get an Autostart time-out on a solo run!

Yup. I think Mr. Bill and I have raced three times. He was red once, broke out once, and just flat beat once.... but of course he was disarming.

"Michael, ya gotta understand something: YOU'RE the local hero. You're SUPPOSED to beat me. It doesn't MEAN anything."

He's really no fun. ;)

I did the Nees's Pieces on his 4-door car, but I'd really like to re-do it sometime. I was tinkering with some different print settings, and I'm not happy with the quality on it at all. Maybe I'll replace it for him when he gets the Turismo done. :p

Let me share a few things with you that I have learned from Billy over the years.
- Pay attention to vapor pressure
- Flash cooling
- "Don't touch that."
- "You've finally grown up when you realize all of your heros are *&&h*les"
- "When in New Jersey, don't make eye contact, and don't say 'hi'. They're liable to think something's wrong with you, follow you home, and shoot you."
- "Don't stick your head in the transmission fluid bucket."

Lots of other little things, but those are the 'words to live by'.

Re: Cool race car names!

Ed,

Pulled up a picture from US 30 Dragway web site and tower picture is a match from York. A lot of good pictures from the mid to late seventies on that site. To bad the track closed. I retired 2 weeks ago from the Apple automotive group in York, Pa. They last operated US 30 and closed the track in 1979. I've often asked the owners to consider reopening the track, they know it probably would do very well but they
have so many other ventures going, many car dealerships, building products division, construction companies, land development, trash removal, airport and more. They have spent big money on all their businesses and operate all of them in a first class manor. They just don't feel like taking on this project. I used drive by the track, [airport] daily, "Cragar" tower long since torn down. Never announced there,
was always working Sat .nites at 75-80 drag-o-way. Did see many events in the early sixties, raced there a few times back then also. A great place, always fun.

My '72 Dodge Demon Super Stocker (I still have it) I named "Demonstration". My current FWD Stocker I put "Out Front Racing" on the door. My very first race car ride was a 1966 "D" Stock Dart (273) factory race car. It's name was "Lambcharger". My first car was a '31 Model A sedan with an old Hemi. I called it "The Time Machine".Jim

This is a great thread.

I simply named my magazine project Mustang, "Project Stocker." It's boring, but to the point.

There was also:
Project Six Pack
Project X (Popular Hot Rodding '57 also seen in the movie "Hollywood Knights."
Project O (PHR Super Stock Olds).
Matawan Missile (Frank Manzo)
Whip Wilson's "Trail Boss"
I am working on Frank Bialas to name his high-flying '70 GTX "Hook and Ladder." He is a Fire Captain and his car hooks and leaves like it's climbing a ladder.
Anything with the name SHaKEr in it, Georgia Shaker, etc
Hedonist's Chariot (Dan Stork's 7-second Super Pro Bracket dragster from the late '80s at E-town on 10% nitro).
Cheap Thrills (John Bender, though it's not proven to be such a cheap thrill).
John Caliendo's "Flashback" '60s Vette.
