Re: 1964 426-S 'Street-Wedge'
I had a '65 belvedere with the 426s, auto, posi and with the right tires I had no trouble with any of the single 4bbl cars of the time and could take the '64 tripower GTO's. Later we put the '64 Max wedge cam in it and put a 3705 on it and it ran mid 12's but it was never a true performance motor but I still wish I had one for the street today.

It wouldn't work. As soon as we fired the thing up at Atco they started looking at us funny when they heard the cam but we got away with the carb.

1964 photo at Dover Drag Strip, Wingdale, New York
Doc Burgess in his A/SA, 1964 Plymouth Fury 426-S (365HP Street-Wedge),, lettered 'The Mild 426' The next year,,,,,,he got the 'Black Arrow',, a 1965 Race Hemi As you can see, many Class Winner Decals for A/SA. Pretty much consistent 13.80's @ 102 MPH, and street-driven. The trophy,,,,awarded by Pepsi Cola, the track 'soft drink' provider. Pepsi gave out the trophy and awards to the year end 'points winner' in Stock Class. Doc was so happy, he ordered an A-990 Race Hemi in November 1964,,,,and got a gentleman out of Berwyn, Pennsylvania to help him put it together. http://www.doverdragstrip.com/phpBB3...le.php?id=7325 |
Re: 1964 426-S 'Street-Wedge'
Weren't there a few racers like Bud Faubel, Bobby Harrop or the Ramcharger's team running 1964 Dodge hardtops as well...there's probably a few more racers out there but I can't think of them off the top of my head...anyways here's a couple of photo's of some 1964 Dodge hardtops.

Thanks for posting that photo. It's inspirational. Mild 426 indeed.
What would that car be now at 300 hp? E? My 7 year old son keeps his '65 Black Arrow Plymouth in the back of his closet. Chris Barnes Wagons of Steel Stock 6621 |

Re: 1964 426-S 'Street-Wedge'
Both local cars to me when I lived in Md. Steel front end Pink Panther with a 415 HP Max Wedge and the Dodge with an alum front end and a 425 HP combo owned by Herb Freels. I certified the Pink Panthers engine for an IHRA record back in around 1971/72 at the Colonial Beech Va. points race when Sonny Freeman owned it. .
P.S. That looks like the pits at Aquasco Speedway in Southern Md. when the Dodge pix was taken. |
