I believe this is the SS/IA car that Mike McKinney ran along time in the 80’s and early 90’s. It was red when Mike raced it. He was pictured in a Comp
Cams advertisement for a while doing a big wheelstand. His son Marty runs the car now in brackets these days. But the car is basically the same other then a bracket engine. The car that Mike won stock at the 77 US Nationals, and also was won by Truman 4 years earlier is owned by Mark Waymouth and has been restored to race condition. The car I own was Truman Fields last race car and was acquired from Mike and Roy in a trade for the original Hard Times 1. Truman took my car in trade from Roy. ( picture below 1977 ) Mike’s son Marty is on Facebook. He would be the guy to contact if your looking for info. I have talked to him several times over the years. It’s cool all the information you’re posting about on here. Lots of info on Facebook as well about and a ton of pictures coming up as well. As for this site. Pontiac’s have sort of died off in class racing. It’s a Ford, Chevy, and Mopar world these days. A few diehards left but that’s about it. Just a time long ago when Pontiac’s were popular and prevalent. The NHRA won’t give us any replacement parts for these cars anymore so it’s tough to keep or want to keep them going. The few that are left run well and win races still. But just not that many overall. Quote:

Great info Todd ! Thanks !
I'll try to contact Marty. Sounds like the best way to get pics of all their stuff. "...The car I own was Truman Fields last race car and was acquired from Mike and Roy in a trade for the original Hard Times 1. Truman took my car in trade from Roy. ( picture below 1977 )..." So then, that means that the car he raced at the 2006 Gator Nats, is the car you have now ? https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop What color was it when he raced at the Gators ? Was this the same car that was burgandy ? I know you've explained this to me before. But hey, I'm old. So I'll use that for an excuse. So, are we only talking about 3 '68 Birds here. (1) The original 2-time Indy winner, which has been restored. (2) The traded car that you have now. (3) The former McKinney SS/IA car that Marty is bracket racing now. Have I got it all straight now ? Or were there more than 3 Birds involved here ? If I have it right, the original is restored, as a piece of Pontiac history. Yours is still an active Stocker. And Marty is now bracket racing with the McKinney SS/IA car. Does that sound right ? :) As far as I'm concerned, all these cars are an important part of Pontiac history, because Truman was my 1st Pontiac hero, and the McKinney's got their claim to fame with Truman's car. PS: WOW ! Looks like Marty's FB page has all the pics I'll need. I'll download 'em & post some here. I sent Marty a friend request, so I can get more info. I know the last 3 pics are of a Stocker. But it's a bit of Pontiac history. So, I'm posting it on the SS thread, also. |

OK, I've already mentioned the '69 SS Bird that Keri Angeles Pari drives. I don't know of another '69 SS Bird. If ya'll know of another, past or current, please post that info.
For now, lets move on to early 2nd gen Birds. I don't think very many have ever tried a '70 model. But, beginning in '71, when the 455HO engine came along, I assume there have been several of these '71-'72 455HO cars run in SS, thru the years. So, can you guys name some of 'em ? I can't think of a one. But, there have been a few '73's running SS, because of the SD455 engine. Still some running. I've mentioned Russ Abrams and John & J.B. Clegg. Found a pic of Bob Michael in a '73 SD455 Formy. The pic is not very good. Does anybody have or know where to find a better pic of this car, as well as any other SS Pontiac he's had ? Anybody know what happened to this Bob Michael car, or how it ran ? |

Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers

But, div 4 is my div. So, I am real interested in learning all I can about their Pontiacs. So, anybody with info/pics, please post. That jogged my memory. Back when I had my Stockers, local tracks quit running class, & switched to brackets. But, one track kept a class they called Street Modified. A small cube Super Stock car would have worked good in that class. It was just a lbs per cubic inch class, using NHRA legal weights. Roller cams, Holley carbs, big tires, & ladder bars were legal. It was a class designed for high rpm small cube engines. I had no chance, with a Pontiac engine. But, I couldn't run in Stock any more, so I decided to give it a try. Big mistake. I found a cheap(they were all cheap back then) '68 Bird 'vert & Put some roll bars in it. Got the 'vert because it could run at a heavier weight. Anyhow, my engine builder, in Shreveport, did the machine work on lots of race stuff, including one SS Pontiac. He contacted the Pontiac guy, & got me one of his old solid roller cams. But, some new guys opened a machine shop in a small town, only about 30 miles from me. Their head guy was from CA, and supposedly had lots of experience. Hey, they even had a TF dragster. So, I figured they knew what they were doing. WRONG ! They didn't know anything about Pontiac engines. I got it running, then had to take it back for new oil rings, and a sleeve, before even taking it to the track. Anyhow, I finally got it to the track. Hey it SOUNDED good. It was my first roller cam engine. Of course it wasn't near quick enuff to run with the sbc engines, in the lbs per cubic inch class. It wasn't bracket racing. 1st car to the finish line won. It did run quicker than our Stockers, but not competitive in that class. But we did make a couple of races, & TJ got to make a lot of noise & go quicker than she'd gone in the Stocker. Then "boom". Rod out the side. Discovered that it was the machine shop's fault. I think they only lasted one year. Must have messed up some other stuff too. Hey, I won't charge ya'll anything for that little bit of Pontiac racing history ! :D |

OK, back to 2nd gen Bird SS cars. I've seen quite a few '74 SS Birds. I think I've already mentioned the H-O Racing Specialties SD455 SS Bird. I'll have to call it my all-time favorite. That's because back when I started racing, the only 2 sources of Pontiac info I knew of were Nunzi on the East coast & H-O on the West coast.
I bought all the H-O material & some of their parts. They had helped me with info for my Stocker builds. Their '74 SD455 Bird set a new nat record in SS/KA. Their record time looks real slow, compared to today's SS cars. But, at the time, they had the quickest. Stockers now go quicker than the same SS combo did back then. But ya'll know that. We saw the H-O car run, at the '78 Cajun Nats. Sorry that we didn't get any close-ups. Don't know why, since we did get a close-up of Sonny Ray. Sorry for the poor quality of the pics. But hey, it does prove that the car was there. H-O also had a white '74. I've read that the red car is now the car that J.B. Clegg has. He has run well into the 9's with it, as a stick car. |
Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Gary & Ann were from west Texas, close to Amarillo. My friend Carroll Caudle was doing some work for Gary & Ann when I met them. He had a maroon ‘61 or ‘62 (not very old then) “TriPower” when I first met him. Fine people. Went over to the Dark Side and built a Hemi Cuda latter. I would expect all old timer racers would know Gary. Bad-assed racer at one time. They don’t come any nicer. Hope he & Ann are still with us.

Assume they probably did good at other tracks, also. Some of these guys have had lots of cars, including Bob Michael & Phil Monteith, for sure. Both have had Stock & SS Pontiacs. Haven't seen anything about numbers 4, 5, & 6. Would like more info and/or pics. Found pics of a Tony Reiter car. I'll post some more pics here. I did find a couple of more pics of '69 SS Birds.
The first one looks to be the old style small tire SS car. The next one may be the same car that Keri Angeles Pari has been driving for a long time. But it has only John Angeles on the side. Other pics I've seen have Angeles & McCarthy on the sides. So, anybody know if there were more than one of these '69's, that John Angeles had a hand in ? I've read that Keri made the 1st 9-sec pass in one of these Birds. So, I assume whoever drove it before her ran it into the low 10's, |

I always hesitate to bring up his name. Whenever it's mentioned, there are usually a lot of guys chiming in with some real negative comments, especially on the Pontiac sites. But, I've never had any dealings with him. So, since you brought it up, I'll mention it. Ya'll correct me on any info I get wrong in these Pontiac threads, please. OK, I THINK his 3rd gen Bird used a 400 Pontiac engine. He won his GT/DA class at the US Nats, in 2004. While scanning his website, I ran across this. "...On that note it's important to point out that Roy McKinney was the VERY first NHRA Super Stocker running in a GT class of Super Stock with a 400 cubic inch engine to run in the nines back in 1997. Roy deserves that mention. He's one very smart NHRA racer. You may remember his 1968 Firebird in the CompCams ad almost straight up at Indy. Got to find that picture and put it up..." Well, so far, I don't have pic of that GT car. But, I did find a pic of their red '68 Bird. Anyhow, Bruce bought the 3rd gen Hatari GT car, from Phil Monteith. Here's what's posted about it in his site. "...Hatari...Their old car is campaigned by Bruce on the west coast in Division Seven as time and money allows. 08/08/09 PontiacEngines.com Bruce built a new engine for the '82 bird, as the car came minus engine/trans/converter. Bruce will move the car to GT/DA using a 1968 GTO 400 rated by NHRA at315 hp. The GT / Super Stock classes allow any engine from any year, within the same marque. All NHRA cars are weighed after each run... Bruce went to the 2002 NHRA Phoenix Nationals where he drove the car to his first class win. His first NHRA "Wally." Bruce lost the coin toss and had to race both cars in his class. He beat many time national event champion Mark Faul in the first round. Then put a holeshot on the quicker Earl Snow owned small block powered black '87 Firebird for the win. Best ET to that date - 10.05 Best mph - 131.98 Best sixty foot - 1.29. Very impressive for just his third year racing NHRA Super Stock. Bruce built the engine of course. May 25th, 2002 - New National N.H.R.A. eighth mile record set by Bruce. 6.45 at 101 mph. Still standing today - 04/21/03. Bruce is considering a tattoo..."N.H.R.A. Super Stock Record Holder" Ha! (not) BRUCE DID IT AGAIN!! 2003 CHECKERS/SHUCKS/KRAGEN CLASS WINNER!! Also - Went to the third round at the Las Vegas Nationals 2003 - won $300 clams. Beat Bob Mazzolini - the Mopar guru. Was a very cool time. Oh, yeah, Also - won Indy in 2004. (I won Indy!) How cool. Bruce won Indy..." He was indeed the GT/DA class winner at the AZ race, in '02. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2002#indextop https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2002#indextop The next year he moved down to GT/EA, because Don Kennedy was in GT/DA, which he won. I assume Bruce won GT/EA because he was the only car in his class. In round 1, he appeared to be running in the auto combo class, since there were no other cars in his class. Only the 1st round of SS class elims are posted. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2003#indextop Each class winner is listed, even if they were the only car in their class. If I'm wrong on this, somebody correct it. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2003#indextop At the 2004 US Nats, he qualified #92, with a .967 under, 9.833. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop In the class final, a quicker car slowed for some reason, giving Bruce the win. But hey, a win's a win. He turned a 9.829 in the class final. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop So, he's listed as the GT/DA class winner at the 2004 US Nats. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop So, whether anybody likes him or not, he IS a US Nats class winner. And he did it with Pontiac power ! |

We'll look a lot deeper into the GT cars, later.
We looked at quite a few '74 Birds. Right now, I can't think of a single '75 or '76 SS Bird. But, there have been quite a few '77 & '78 SS Birds. The quickest '77 I've ever heard of is now raced by Mike Morgan. And it uses the low compression 350 engine, with 6X heads. He gives credit to Parsons & Myers for the engine's power. They have built some quick Pontiac engines, for Stock & SS. I know Mike won his class at Indy one year. And, Bill Rink & Mike got winner/RU in class there. An all Pontiac 350 powered SS class final is really cool to me. Anyhow, I'll look up some of his best results, & post 'em. For the cars quick enuff to make the field, Indy is a good measure of a car's performance. So, lets look at what Mike has done there. In 2015, he ran .920 under, for the #41 position. He was higher on the list than Bill Rink, Peter Biondo, & Scott Burton. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2015#indextop He was also RU in SS/MA. Bill Rink won SS/LA. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2015#indextop In 2016, he went 1.006 under, for the #47 position. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2016#indextop He also won the SS/MA class. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2016#indextop In 2017, he went 1.098 under, for #23 position. Had a good shot at the class win, but left .006 too soon in the 1st round. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2017#indextop In 2018, he went 1.233 under, for #11 position. 10.617 is pretty quick for a 350 Pontiac. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2018#indextop For class, he had the field covered. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2018#indextop BUT, in the final, against Bill Rink, he played it a little too safe, cut a REALLY bad light, & lost. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2018#indextop In 2019, he slowed a little, but still went 1.126 under, for #22 position. Left too soon in the class final & had to settle for RU to Bill Rink, again. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2019#indextop Read somewhere that he'd turned some 10.40's. Will see if I can find that info. OK, in the 3rd round of this race, he ran a 10.414, to beat Bill Rink's 10.555, in a heads-up SS/LA 3rd round match-up. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2018#indextop Don't know what his best ET has been. But 10.40's from a low CR Pontiac 350, in a legal weight '77 Bird, sounds pretty darn good, to me ! These 2 Pontiac 350 powered cars are very competitive. |
Re: Best Pontiac Powered Super Stockers
Sal originally built that car in a tiny one car garage in Bridgeport, Ct. Did the chassis himself. He was a sharp dude, who put together a Chevy powered Top Fuel dragster for himself, before the Super Stocker.

OK, from what I've recently found online, The Ken Shawver '78 SS Bird may have been the most competitive Pontiac SS Bird, over a long period of time.
Don't know how many wins it had. But it won class at Indy, many times. Monte Howard was the driver for some of those years. I mentioned some of this earlier. But I think this car deserves a closer look. Maybe some of you guys can post about races you know that the car won. So, Ken made the Indy field in '98, '99, & 2000. But he was in the lower half of the field. Didn't see him on the list in '01. But, in '02, he'd apparently come up with more power. He was #38, @ 1.014 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2002#indextop In '03 he was 1.089 under for spot #14. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2003#indextop In '04, he was #25 @ 1.102 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop He was also the SS/LA winner. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2004#indextop AND, how 'bout this. In '05, he was #1 qualifier at Indy ! Let that sink in ! A 1978 Pontiac powered Firebird was the #1 qualifier at Indy. WOW ! He was 1.254 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop And of course, he won his class. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2005#indextop In '06 he was #4 @ 1.192 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop Won SS/KA, again. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2006#indextop In '07, Monte Howard was driving. he was #29 @ 1.118 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop Got the SS/KA win. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2007#indextop In '08, Monte was #24 @ 1.100 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2008#indextop In '09 he was #92 @ 1.075 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2009#indextop In both '08 & '09 there were 2 quicker cars in his class. But here's a quote fro this year's 1st round loss: "Big, long wheelstand for Howard. Hodge runs him down on the big end." In 2010, he was #95, @ only .765 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop But he won SS/KA. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2010#indextop In 2011, he was #98 @ .718 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2011#indextop In 2012, he was #103 @ .794 under. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop So, over a 15 year period, the car made the field at almost every US Nats, had 5 class wins, and was #1 qualifier once. https://www.dragracecentral.com/DRCS...r2012#indextop Until this thread, I'd never even heard of this car. Now, it MAY end up being on the top of my list, as the #1 hall of fame SS Pontiac. Hey, I'm glad I came ! :) Of course, there are other cars to consider. But if this car won lots of races & qualified near the top of lots of qualifying lists, it may be #1. Peter Biondo was a very good driver, & won lots of races. But, the Shawver/Howard car ran for a long time. May still be running. Don't know. Also don't know if it qualified at Indy before 1998. So, I'd like you guys to help me dig up all the info you can on this car. Lets try to give it the recognition it deserves. The pic below is what I have for Monte Howard. If this is not the car I've been talkin about in this post, somebody let me know. |

And, you seem to be needling me about these little 4 cyl engines, or whatever they are. When I began these threads, I had in mind mainly Pontiac V8's, from the '50's on up thru the 1981 301's. I, personally would like to keep them basically that way. Maybe a good idea would be to start a thread on best 4 cyl drag engines/cars of all time, or something like that. I'd guess there are quite a few here who'd be interested in such a thread. Back in the old days, we met a guy from our division named Dave Botkin. He had a very competitive Pinto, named Tumbleweed. I was not into 4-cyl cars, but this seemed like a very nice & friendly guy. But, if you insist, 4-cyl info is welcome here. Or you can change the name of my threads to say "Pontiac V8 powered". It's up to you. Hey, I'm really a nice guy. I'm not here to offend any person in any way. Would like to get along with everybody here, if at all possible.
