Chris,

I raced a 225, 4sp Valiant in 1964.....bone stock, I broke 5ea 7 3/4's in one year.......8 3/4 is the only way to go.

PS. never lost a street race to another 6cyl the entire I owned it.

if you want to run under the modern index with a stick, the 8 3/4 will never last either. besides that all the ring gear selections you need are obsolete.

If it hooks hard enough that you need a Dana 60 the cranks will start to break at the rear flywheel flange. The motor will still run, the car just wont move. I went thru that with an H/G Anglia with a slant 6 back in the early 70s, broke 3 of them.

The 8 3/4 wont live behind a 273 2 bbl, so i dont see how it will live behind a 225. I have these combinations in cars (both A and B body) running right now so I am telling you from life experience with current cars not hypotheticals. The 5.38 and up ring gears are obsolete from good manufacturers. If you stick with an automatic (no pun intended) you wont have any problems. If you want an index car you may be able to get away with cutting the corners.

Just curious, where did the crank break, not the track the place on the crank ?

They usually break at the flange or kick no. 6 rod out.....at least that's where mine always failed.
