Re: Horsepower Reduction?
You have to request HP off a given combo. If it qualifies for a reduction, that specific combo will get reduced. Similar platform combo's may also get reduced, but only that specific year. I had my 1978 Nova 305/145 reduced, and they reduced the Buick, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile versions of the Nova with the exact same motor as well, but only in 1978. No other cars/body styles were reduced. There are criteria for minimum, maximums, and average et's for the combo that determine eligibility for reduction and how much. Those are spelled out in the NHRAracer website under the Automatic Horsepower Factor System link.
Fill out the form, never hurts to ask! |
Re: Horsepower Reduction?
This horsepower thing has really got out of hand.
For me an engine hp rating is just that, stick, auto long/short wheelbase, convertible etc. The biggest reason for this result came when they allowed the combo's to move up one Class, that meaning the same Cars could dominate one more class, thus other Cars started need some help and there we went! Before that rule was changed the classes where protected from certain Cars. |

5 minutes to fill out the form. Worst that could happen is they say no. Of course the person filling out the request would have to be the driver that drove that combo at a national or Divisional event this year. Just have to get it done before the Monday after the World Finals in November. http://www.nhraracer.com/ahfs.asp |
Re: Horsepower Reduction?
Get the letters in early, it will allow NHRA time to do nessary research to get it correct. I think the cut off date for requests to be reviewed is sometime in October. I could be wrong. If the letter is late it will be considered in the next review period. Reduction in Hp is an annual end of year, so get it in now or wait till next year.
Let me add this if the facts support reduction or additions according to AHFS guidelines it will usually happen. |
Re: Horsepower Reduction?
1979 malibu wagon 350 287 hp. 1979 nova 350 279 hp. 1979 camaro 350 283 hp. 1979 corvette 350 283 hp. 1979 cutlass wagon 275 hp. with same chevy 350, also it can have aluminum hood & radiator support, same car just different header panel & dash, Malibu wagon with 350 got hp. twice, first time with camaro & corvette, second time with camaro, i looked in nitro joe`s books best run i could find was 6 tens under old index for malibu wagon 350. NHRA took hp. back off camaro & corvette & not the malibu wagon.

Re: Horsepower Reduction?
If you go to the NHRA Competition page (link on top here) it is all spelled out verbatim on the Automatic Help For Slugs (AHFS) link. Cars are separated by “platform”. Ie Skylark & Regal (1978) are separate one is a Gbody one is Kbody.
Happy HP hunting ... God knows the Ffford 302 2bbl had a good day January 1 2014 😡 |
