Re: Chip Recomendation for 01 Dodge with 24 Valve Cummins
Chris,
I have the same motor in my truck. No chip- I took a different approach, installed the Bosch "RV Motorhome" injectors. They are good for 40 HP. At the same time I added a boost fooler so the ecm would not cut the fuel back when the boost goes above the limit (19.5 #?). I picked up more than 10% mileage towing. Now it makes 28-29# of boost. The RV injectors are not expensive. I paid less than $300. I like them because it idles smoother and without the trailer I can let the clutch out in 2nd without touching the accelerator. Mine has the 6 spd. plus a 4" exhaust. With the stock injectors it would stumble. Visually you can see that these injectors have more and smaller holes. With my truck & 40' trailer completely loaded it weighs 20,500# and I could get 10.5 MPG. It even hit 11 once. I added an Edge EZ recently and had it on the economy setting. It added good power but really did not improve the mileage. Now with fuel over $3 again I am back to just the boost fooler. I also have an EGT installed before the turbo. Those are always a good idea when you modify your truck. It doesn't take too many modifications to push the exhaust temp over 1200 and that is when the damage starts (some say 1300, I'm conservative). I get my information from the Turbo Diesel Register magazine & website. Check them out. For $35 a year you get the magazine and can post and search their boards and it's well worth it. There is a lot of reliable information there. Good luck Bill Ringer |

one other thing I forgot to mention is fuel additives.....POWER SERVICE makes a diesel fuel additive that increases the cetane rating of the fuel which helps combustion and will give you a fuel mileage increase also....well worth the cost cause it only adds about $2.00 to a fill up....they make 2 versions, they both help lubricate the fuel system with the now required USLD fuels and one also includes an anti-gelling formula......it's available at Walmart, Advance Auto and I am sure many other places.....there are other types but this is the one I have been using in my '05 for more than 100k......

One more important piece of info....
If your truck still has warranty left... all of these modifications could be costly if you need engine repairs. That's for sure! |
Re: Chip Recomendation for 01 Dodge with 24 Valve Cummins
I use an Edge Comp and on the lower settings, the extra timing helps.
Driving the speed limit helps too. The injector pump needs fuel to be delivered with at least 10 psi for the timing to advance correctly. There's a fitting on the side of the injector pump to check the lift pump fuel pressure. If you have an old R12 Freon install kit w/gauge, you can use it to check the lift pump fuel pressure, otherwise kits are avalable at most chain type auto parts stores. Don't forget to close the fill valve. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p..._/Image048.jpg http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p..._/Image042.jpg Screw the connector on the fitting of the injector pump on the driver's side of the engine. Turn the keyswitch just enough to "bump" the starter to get The Free 25 Second Lift Pump Run. http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p..._/Image046.jpg Stock spec is 10psi+. |
