Repainted mine last year with Rustoleum and a regular brush, no primer. Worked great. I used 2-sided tape to position the rollbar padding and keep it from rolling around the bar, and then wrapped it with Duck Tape to protect it.

Have you used the VHT recently? They changed the can and I have had reelly bad luck with it. It sprays poorly and runs. I haven't bought a can of it in a yearish, maybe it's been fixed?

Did you use primer?

Larry, no primer, I just used oil/grease cleaner, then masked and
it did take about 2 coats of gloss black rustoleum spray paint.

RustOleum spray here too..works great.

As a side note RustOleum also makes engine enamel, and it too is quality stuff.

If the paint is stored improperly, it does not matter the brand, it will cause lots of problems when in use.

I used POR-15 with foam brushes. Flowed out very nice, no brush marks...
In my research before I tackled this job, a product called OneShot, sign paint was highly recommend, but it is pricey

Re: Roll bar painting question?

I sprayed mine when the car was apart with Sikkens 'Rally Black' with an epoxy primer underneath. The interior was completely out and the car wasnt painted yet made it real easy, if you dont want to totally dismantle the car rustoleum or trem-clad areosol or brushable would work well. I have painted many rollbars professionally and the masking up the interior is a HUGE pain in the rear end! The Sikkens 'Rally Black' also comes in a 'spray bomb' and its shine is exactly the same gloss as factory chassis and underhood paint. The prep of the bars is the most important, lacquer thinner or a wax and grease remover (engine cleaner is the same thing), a red scotch brite pad, another wipe down and its ready for paint. As a side note spray bombs or non- catalized paints are no where near as tough as hardened paints.

Thank you everyone for the advise and pictures. I was thinking of painting my cage grey, does this have any effect on the prep? I am leaning twards rustoliem and spong brushes.

Re: Roll bar painting question?

I used PPG acrylic lacquer over Rustoleum primer; wanted to match my interior color.
